"Taxes shall be lowered. Mobilization shall continue. And let's no take drastic measures yet." The Advisor notes down your decision and leaves.

884 AD, Spring

Minor clashes on the western front were won by your Army, with light casualties.

There's another problem though:

There have been religious clashes in the north, most of them concentrated at the large city of Einvad. Reports are inaccurate about how it started but they know how it ended; a crowd of up to three thousand, Pantheonists and Singularists (as the sectarians started to call themselves recently) fought each other on the streets of Einvad, with several hundred dead, city dungeon filled with people and thirty shops and houses pillaged, set on fire or both.

The city governor asks the Crown to do something, or he will take matters in his hands and punish the Singularists responsible. In the reply, you...

A) Tell him to do what he feels is best.
B) Ask him to punish Pantheonists instead.
C) Ask him to punish all responsible, no matter their religious stance.
D) Order him to exile the Singularists north.

You decide to have the ancient valuables re-buried with the skeletons.

883, Midwinter

Another report comes from the west; the Luathbas soldiers have repelled an attack by some new horde of Adila horsemen. The estimations put this new group at between 2500 to 3500 horsemen, and they had men dressed somewhat differently than the usual Adila outfits. Some soldiers murmur that the distant Inkhani tribe possibly was drawn into the conflict.

Also, your niece Ciri decided to turn down King Beren's offer of marriage. You hear that he instead married a young lady from an old and respected Kiwi family of nobles.

883, Late Winter

In recent weeks there was no action on the western front except few skirmishes between Adila raiders and Tven horsemen, or your scouts.

The goldmines manager sends you a report; the miners managed to squeeze out enough extra nuggets from the mines to cover the short-time loss.

883 AD, End of the Year

When you're admiring the winter pineflowers, a Luathbasian mountain flower grown in Palace's gardens, the advisor brings you the Scrolls of Kingdom Status. The Advisor certainly looks a bit troubled, even before you start to peruse the scrolls:

Happiness: 5
Population: 5
Economy: 3
Army: 4

No wonder he's nervous.

"Dear Queen," the Advisor begins, "our economy continues to be at the lows, the peasants begin to get tired of constant warring, and our Army is being chipped away year by year. We need to do something to alleviate at least one of these problems, because we cannot allow this to continue any longer."

"What do you suggest?" You ask in a quiet voice.

"We can keep the taxes higher. We can extend the emergency mobilization. Both these options will of course infuriate the population, unless we null them to relieve the burdens of the Luathbas people. "

"Anything more desperate on your mind, though?"

"Well, yes. We could give away Western Territories back to Adila. We can try to sell part of Khosra province to the Kashites or the Gubtas in exchange for lots of money or military support. We could then send that money to Queen Sela, asking for mercenary forces, or mayhaps we could give away our vassal, Duchy of Tven, for that-" You raise your hand to silence the Advisor.

He never offered such desperate measures during the reign of your husband or those before him. Truly, these are trying times...

As for the matters at hand...

A) Keep the taxes raised and continue the mobilization to ensure that the Treasury and Army keep on trucking - the sacrifices of Luathbas peoples will sure won't be in vain!
B) Keep taxes raised but recall part of the emergency forces back home for now.
C) Lower the taxes to lessen the burden on peasants but mobilization will have to continue to keep the front well-defended
D) Lower the taxes and recall those pried away from their fields last Spring. Luathbas citizenry shouldn't be allowed to suffer that hard.

As for the possible peace with Adila...

A) Send an offer of giving away the West in exchange for peace.
B) NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

As for the desperate measure of trading away Duchy of Tven to Queen Sela of Dahnia...

A) Ain't gonna happen.
B) Offer to hand over seniorship over Duchy of Tven in exchange for mercenary services of Dahnian Army.
C) Offer to hand over seniorship over Duchy of Tven in exchange for vast amount of wealth and resources from Dahnian Treasury.

As for the desperate measure of trading away part Khosra Province to Gubta Empire...

A) Ain't gonna happen either.
B) Offer to hand over ownership of eastern half of the Khosra Province to Gubta in exchange for their dreaded Oliphaunts and various siege engines.
C) Offer to hand over ownership of northern half of the Khosra Province to Kashite Kingdom in exchange for their military and economical support.
D) Offer to hand over ownership of eastern half of the Khosra Province in exchange for vast amount of Gubta valuables and treasures.

//Quadruple vote, no split votes pls or they will get ignored. There's a whole bunch of options this time so update won't happen unless at least 10+ people cast their votes.

You reply to him that he should ask Ciri. Out of curiosity, you ask Ciri yourself and she is indifferent to this.

Up to them two, then.

Good news from the mines; last week the miners managed to clean most of them and resumed gold mining with haste, doing extra work to ensure they can meet the yearly quotas.

You haven't had any sadness fits recently. The last year was, if a bit bloody, a peaceful one. You believe it is time to move forward, and leave the sadness behind.

Congratulations! Queen Elana is now longer Depressed!

Few days later, something happens.

While working on the groundwork to a new storage house, the workers dug up a mass grave, covered with large flat stones from all directions. About 40 skeletons, all of them quite tall and dressed in linen tunics and dresses. Suprisingly, they are well adorned in burial goods; old copper and gold bracelets and earrings were found, along with assortment of slightly rusted weapons. Overall, there's quite a lot of valuables in there.

Some history-oriented courtiers believe this to be a Lametamian type of burial.

While the bodies were re-buried to prevent any angry ghosts from popping up, what about the jewellery?

A) Re-bury it at skeletons' new tomb, last thing we need is a visit form overly attached ghosts.
B) The workers found the riches, so let's them have them.
C) What a silly question. To the Treasury with them!

You ask the Treasurer to quickly provide the troops with supplies and equipment while a letter is written and sent to Duke of Tven, demanding some military force to be provided for you.

Quote

A week later, a force of over two thousand horsemen rides forth to your palace, their leading officer holding the banner of Tven Duchy. He also brought you a letter, in which the Duke mentions that he heard of the troubles in the west and have been preparing his troops for just that kind of occassion.

His horsemen escort the supplies and equipment to the frontline with haste.

883 AD, Late Summer

There is a report from the Army commanders in the west; the supplies and Tven horsemen were joyfully welcomed by your troops, and they arrived in just right time to deal with the third Adila horde that tried their chances, and these nomads were soundly defeated.

883 AD, Autumn

The Army reports that the Adila changed their tactics; no longer moving in large hordes, they instead took into ravaging and pillaging of the countryside with cavalry units about hundred or two strong. The commanders say its hard to keep them in check but the Tven horsemen are trying their best.

There's also a shift in religious balance; your aunt, Queen Sela, have publicly announced that the Sect of One is free to preach about and worship their united God in the combined borders of Dahnia and Ruz. Reportedly already hundreds of Sectarians fled Luathbas.

There's also a rumor that the Sect might be going strong amongst the Tven population as well.

"Don't they have their own sectarian version of our Pantheon?" You ask, learned in books of the religion.

"Yes, but it never had any say in politics, unlike our clergy did for centuries in Luathbas, which is why Queen Sela could do what she did without repercussions." Explains the advisor.

There's nothing to do here about it, of course - but the Luathbas Pantheonists might soon say a word or three about this whole sectarianism going strong across the northern border.

883 AD, Mid-Autumn

A tunnel collapse occured at the gold mines in north west! The manager says the damage is severe and even with help of few passing dwarves, they might've problems reaching the usual amount of profits.

Sad report comes from Kingdom of Kiwi just few days later; your niece Sela died of complications after birth of Beren's youngest child, a boy he named Daedrin.

A day later your vassal Beren sends a letter in which he politely inquires whether he can have the allowance to marry your other niece, Ciri, to ensure that his fledging Kingdom (and fledging dynasty) has enough royals in case of crisis.

A) Naw, he shouldn't be that greedy.
B) Sure, since he asked nicely.
C) He should ask Ciri instead.

You decide to send him money and supplies so he can better equip his own forces.

883 AD, Midsummer

You hear that the supplies arrived safely and were distributed amongst the Kiwi forces. They mostly profited from hundreds of crossbows, as the Kiwi lacked means to fashion them in numbers previously.

Meanwhile, your Army has met with one of the smaller hordes. After brief skirmish and about half thousand casualties total, the Adila ran away. Unfortunately, the situation amongst your forces is rather grim; the units are small and supplies are limited, unfortunately. The commanders plead the Crown to provide auxiliaries from abroad, fresh supplies, or, even better, both.

As for auxiliaries...

A) Demand that your vassal, Duke Tven, provides soldiers for your campaign.
B) Ask your ally, Queen Sela of Dahnia, to provide soldiers for your campaign.
C) Ask your distant friends, the Gubtas, to provide soldiers for your campaign.
D) Do nothing.

As for supplies...

A) Borrow or buy foodstuffs and arms from merchants and commonfolk alike, if need be.
B) Do nothing.

//No split votes etc.

You publicly proclaim that the royal family had really nothing to do with it, and beseech the people of Luathbas to look at the true culprits, the Pantheonists, who simply cannot grow up to share their places in souls of the citizenry with another faith.

The citizenry across the country, but mostly in the north, harasses the Pantheon priests, demanding they stop being such jerks and everything. This leads to the replacement of the Archpriest with a new one, after the council of the most important temple representatives deems him too violent for the post.

Nonetheless, the reputation and the influence of the Pantheon's higher echelons has been damaged by this.

884 AD, Summer

A report from Kiwi; their Army suffered a defeat after their thinly spread forces were attacked by a three thousand strong unit of Ramo cavalry. They had to forsake some borderland of their while King Beren asks you to dedicate some of your forces to the protection of his lands.

A) Send him money and war supplies instead, he can put those to a good use as well.
B) Naw, he had time to prepare and it's not your fault he prepared badly.
C) Kiwis are our vassals and they guard our Army's rear. Let's send a portion of Luathbas Army there.

Holding back grief and anger, you sign the document prepared by the Advisor that removes Ceodwell from line of succession and instead makes Aife your heir.

883 AD, Late Spring

Quote

You receive a report that Luathbas Army met with the main body of the horde in the Magvar Valley. The report details a gory battle that extended well into the fight as neither sides wished to retreat too early. But in this conflict almost two thousand of Luathbas soldiers fell. By the morning next day, the Adila were nowhere to be seen, leaving corpses of horses and their people behind; various body counts put the losses of the Adila between three to six thousand.

The scouts then determined that the Adila turned back toward western edges of your westlands, possibly thrown into disarry after this defeat. Your commanders will re-group their remaining forces and cautiously move onwards.

Meanwhile, an upsetting development happened in the north. The local Pantheonists have apparently raided more than hundred of homesteads in cities and farming villages, dragging out 'heretics' for public shaming, beatings or both. In few cases of deaths, the culprits pointed their fingers at the Archpriest, and, apparently, the Royal Family as the ones who 'gave allowance for purge of the infidels'. This has riled up some of the northern citizenry and few nobles as well.

The advisor grimaces after hearing of this.

"Your Majesty, we've ought to do something about it." You decide to...

A) Reject any claims that you're behind this as 'mere rumors'.
B) Openly and publicly confirm that Houlandine Dynasty does see Sect of One as national enemies.
C) Do nothing, as any reaction will only fuel rumors and discontent.
D) Try to play on the people's feelings and urge them to stop this lawlessness, throwing all blame on Archrpeist and the Pantheonists in the meanwhile.

You decide to not lead the men on your own, and leave that in the hands of your commanders.

883 AD, Mid-Spring

The Army, after gathering draftees for few weeks, moves westwards just as report comes from the western lands; several settlements were torched and many peasants killed in retribution for 'joining' your Kingdom.

The scouts and agents were able to determine the numbers and composition of the horde more; the largest body is most mobile and consists of eight thousand horsemen. There are two smaller hordes, each two to three thousand strong, one ravaging the flanks of the big horde, the other mostly keeping at the rear, possibly to be used as reinforcements if needed.

The Army is of course informed of it.

Few days later, as you conclude the budgetary council of this quarter, you notice that the courtiers are debating something with the Advisor. After staring at the nobles for a while, you cough to get their attention. That startles them somewhat, and they have a quick whisper with the Advisor, who steps forward.

"My Queen... there might be somewhat unfortunate report I have to inform you about." You stare at the Advisor, who adjusts his collar a bit.

"It's about Prince Ceodwell. His tutors and nannies agree that His Highness seem to be a little... backwards. He has trouble spelling words, remembering rules of etiquette, cannot grasp mathematics and forgets names of places and titles of his important subjects."

"He is a slow learner." You try to defend Ceodwell, but the Advisor sighs.

"Your Majesty, he is eight years old. There's no doubt that Prince Ceodwell is, to put it bluntly, dim-witted."

Blood boils within you. You lost two husbands, one child and now they want to-

You take a deep breath. It will be alright. You have many children. Ceodwell can always remain in his castle and have a good life, perhaps...

"You Majesty, we need to do something about Prince Ceodwell, one way or another." The advisor bows his head.

A) "Get him better tutors than the current ones. It's obvious that they're approaching his eccentricity wrong. He will make a good King yet!"
B) "As much as it pains me, we will have to remove him from the line of succession. His sister Aife shall succeed me if Ceodwell is truly unfit for the Throne."
