You therefore change the laws; instead of just having workshops and tradeposts, now the dwarves will also be allowed to settle down on the Crown's permission and by paying special immigration tax - starting with the craftsmaster, whose permit you sign personally.

877 AD, Late Winter

The Spymaster appears at your side as you're reading a book on the history of Parsia one evening and without a word, presents you a scroll. You look at the Spymaster and you think you can detect a hint of him being rather alarmed.

Nonetheless, you open up the scroll. It's a letter.

"To King Feodh

I will gladly become your vassal if you send me troops and money no later than next spring by the northwestern border of Luathbas. This I pledge with my, well, word, as I knew you for a while and I know that you would rather have more allies than enemies in the inevitable war against the Damdamians.

Sincerely
Beren, once a bard of yours"

A) What!
B) What.
C) What?

Yes, yes I did. Stable pay, stable hours, stable social. It is good, for once in my life.

You send an offer to help the rebel leader with your army and wealth if he pledges loyalty to you after his victory.

877 AD, Winter

The guildmasters bring good news; refurbishment of both the Library and House of Lech have been finished in recent weeks.

877 AD, Midwinter

The mayor of Luathbas Capital city asked for audience and was given one.

"My liege, I know that we have agreed to let the dwarves build tradeposts and workshops, but I do not remember anything about bringing their extended families to settle down here! And it happens that one of the older dwarves, a craftsmaster, have brought twenty of his family members and has been making a fuzz for whole week about demanding to be given or sold an estate where his family could live. After the stubborn old dwarf didn't want to listen to my arguments I decided to come and ask you for opinion on this matter." You think about it for a moment.

A) Allow this dwarf and any other to settle down only with your explicit permission - and a special tax, perhaps, to throttle the immigration a bit?
B) Allow only the craftsmaster's family to come and settle down in the capital, on the account of craftsmaster's age and fame.
C) Agree with the Governor and do not allow the dwarves to bring families with them to Luathbas.
D) Allow this dwarf and any other to settle down in Luathbas if they want to.

You tell the Treasurer to spend even more money on food plus some on the medicine. He weeps a little bit but sets out to work.

The people of Luathbas get enough medicinal herbs and delicious foods from abroad, their stomaches filled by their benevolent King once again this year!

Your subjects cry in awe and gratitude, calling you 'The Savior', and soon this becomes your title and nickname amongst the people!

877 AD, Autumn

Apparently, as if it didn't have enough problems with its tiny size and tiny army, the Duchy of Koi have fallen victim to rebellion! Apparently, some young, long thought dead, heir of the Kiwi royal family have gathered enough support amongst some governors and knights that he could launch an offensive against the Koi royal family.

Currently, the rebels are in control of the northern, more forested and less developed half of the Koi. The court debates about this recent development. In the end, you decide to...

A) Do nothing - it's not your debacle.
B) Send an offer of help to the Duke of Koi: soldiers for money.
C) Send an offer of help to the rebel leader: soldiers for money.
D) Send an offer of help to the rebel leader, promising much help if he becomes your vassal in the future.
E) Send an offer of help to the Duke of Koi, promising much help if he becomes your vassal in the future.

You prepare a speech to convince the demon to accept a smaller amount of wealth in gold.

877 AD, Four days later

At the very noon, the sky turns black and Doach'shavul Xestha'zael Cho'vac returns in the cloud of green, hideous smoke.

"I see no wealth prepared in this hall." He hisses and you stand up to deliver the speech.

Quote

The demon growls and roars.

"Dare you mock me with your diplomacy, human. I shall take the gold, but you shall pay for trying to outsmart a powerful being like me." Cho'vac laughs and disappears in the cloud of putrid smoke.

Within few days you get all kinds of terrible news.

Firstly, the Treasurer reports that more than half of the wealth stored in the Treasury has mysteriously dissappeared.

Then, governors from the agrarian settlements report that terrible pestilence have befallen both the people and the crops; the former are bedridden and the latter withered en masse.

877 AD, Late Summer

Both the crop withering and the plague have stopped; but lots of crops have been destroyed and thousands of people have succumbed to the internal rot.

A) Dispense money to people so that they can buy themselves medicines to prevent further ailments.
B) Compose a letter in which you ask people of Luathbas to perservere and keep strong.
C) Buy another load of foodstuffs from abroad so the famine can be stopped before it begins.
D) Spend ton of money on medicine and food so that your people shall suffer no longer.

Could you clarify which is less, Haspen?

A just gives him all monies he wants, B is an attempt to have him consider taking less.

You order the scribes to catch up on history lessons about Brenan, so they spend few days in the library.

Unfortunately they find some facts and none are too good:

Brenan's dynasty fell thirty years later and their successors got rid of their possessions and administrative scrolls, Brenan's palace was the size of a mead hall, and that Brenan had a penchant - if this particular apocrypha is to be believed - to pay with copper and silver money to those he rewarded.

"But we use gold now, your majesty." Your trade advisor chimes in.

The scribes also re-read both Cho'vac's and Luathbas contracts, and they're sure that the contract says 'monetary payment equal to the size of the Palace of Luathbas King', without specifying whose Palace it must be.

Hmmm.

A) Ask the Treasurer to appraise the worth of Luathbas palace and present it in the wealth of copper and silver coins in three days.
B) Compose a speech in which you explain Cho'vac that silver and copper are so first half of the millenium and therefore you will pay him a (smaller) bundle of gold.
C) Send orders to Army to assemble at the Capital in three days and prepare for, well, demon-slaying, but you're sure they can succeed.

The demon hisses.

"So be it." A scroll appears on your lap with a puff of smoke. It's a very long and very thick scroll.

"I shall return in seven nights, and you better provide the riches... or elsssssss..." The demon dematerializes with cloud of toxic smoke and the sky becomes normal again. The courtiers murmur, some still not believing in what they see.

You set out to read the contract while your scribes hastily invade the library in search for a copy of the contract.

The contract states that to fight against the ogre nomads from the north (say wut) and slaying of their leader, Brenan decided to ask a traveling magician of some sort (no details here) to summon a supernatural being, and that being was Cho'vac. Unfortunately Brenan couldn't provide enough riches for Cho'vac so they struck a deal; Cho'vac would return in 500 years to collect the money, and the amount agreed upon was 'the size and value of the Palace of Luathbas King'.

The scribes do find a very old scroll of which text is barely readable, but enough words and passages can be read to determine that it is the Luathbas copy of the contract.

The debts of your predecessors will sure ruin you one day.

A) Inform the Treasurer to start counting coins for the demon.
B) Order the scribes to re-read all scrolls and books on Brenan and his dynasty and his palace, maybe you can out-smart the demon or something.
C) Summon the Army to the Palace as surely you aren't going to pay demon palace-sized amounts of money!

You set aside some wealth to procure foodstuffs from abroad.

Many foods are procured, mostly from Damdamians and the Kashite. Foodstuffs are stored for the winter and there will be no famine this year.

877 AD, Midsummer, Longest Day of the Year

You're listening to a performance of a wandering troupe of minstrels, Beren having taken a vacation to visit his ailing uncle in Duchy of Koi, when suddenly the sky turns black and thick green cloud of smoke appears in the throne room! Courtiers and minsterls alike scream and choke on the vile sulphuric fog.

Then, the fog coalesces into some otherwordly, eldritch being! It has an exposed ribcage of black bones, torn leathery wings and three green eyes that stare at you and, you feel, into your insides.

"I am Doach'shavul Xestha'zael Cho'vac. I sense the blood of the Luathbas people amongst me, so I am in the right place. I have come to take what is mine, for the services I have paid to King Brenan in the year 377 of your reckoning. Lest I be paid, I shall turn your pitiful little kingdom into a putrid swamp that exhales fumes killing all life about the land!" The demon hisses and exhales some fumes that only make the air in the throne room even more vile. You quickly decide to...

A) Tell him to take whatever he wants from the Treasury, and to spare your life!
B) Explain to him that you have no idea about any debts to demons and therefore are not going to cave in to Do'azn'shavul's demands!
C) Demand that he provides you with the contract so that you, as a learned man of law, can check its validity, because no matter if human, dwarf or demon - for the love of all the Pantheon, nobody's gonna swindle a Houlandine from his wealth!

Clearly seeing it as nothing more than just a random peak in banditry, you send the Army in to quash the criminal scum.

Quote

The criminal scum, under the lead of a man called 'Ónach', manage to ambush an army unit in forested area, the thinly spread columns of soldiers fell prey to huntsmen and macemen and slingers at the Battle of Felonsein Forest. Truly a day of shame for the Army.

After this loss, the officers double their efforts and eliminate the bandit army along with Ónach, but the casualties are high and the morale of people, having so believed in the invicibility of Luathbas Army, lowers a bit.

877 AD, Summer

If misfortunes appear, they seem to appear in pairs.

The heat of the summer have managed to scorch the lands. Many a wee stalks and sprouts have already been ruined, and the farmers bemoan their losses. Not only that but less crops means less food, and less food means, well, problems.

A) Alas, nothing can be done against the capricious nature.
B) Immediately spend some of our vast wealth to procure foodstuffs from abroad to pre-empt any famine later in the year.
