You ask them to give you a day to check your books and scrols. They agree.

For the most of the evening you spend time in the library, swimming through books, scrolls, letters nad encyclopedias of all kinds that could ossess info related to the blue gemstones that the dwarves seek.

Quote
6*

It doesn't take you long to delve into books about the Gubta Empire, which, after all, sells a lot of gemstones to luathbas. You read through a paper written down by a merchant, then some jewel connoisseur, then a religious ritual of the Gubta involving gemstones. Finally, you trace down at least four off-hand mentions and a specific, detailed inscription: of dark blue gemstones with brilliant lustre and hardiness revered by Gubta mystics, and which are mined in the north of the distant Empire.

You write down some notes for the dwarves and prepare a letter for the Gubta governor or some such person who would meet iwth the dwarves, detailing in it their plea and your hopes that your allies can help the dwarves find the rare gemstones.

Next day you pass the information to the dwarves.

"May you be praised, human king." The bluebeard, and the other dwarves, bow their heads slightly. "We will of course verify your words, but first, the mines. We shall embark immediatelly, and hopefully, within a year, not a droplet of water will ever leak through the walls of your mines again." The dwarves depart along with a guide and few guards.

871 AD, Summer

A wave of celebrations amongst your peasants reach you faster than the official report from the Marshal.

The Parsian Kingdom is no more! Their last king, Shashanshah II, have been slain during an attack against the Parsian capital, and the city fell to the combined forces of Luathbas and Gubta and the Kashite. The latter two dealt swiftly with the remainder of the Parsian royal family and the citizens of the fortified settlement. The Kashite then took many slaves while Gubta began burning down Parsian temples and shrines with great fervor.

The Marshal also reports that he had a council with the Gubta diplomat and Kashite prince, and they made if very clear that they want large chunks of Parsia for themselves. The Marshal, not a great negotiator, unfortunately, had to back off on some more lucrative cities and areas; thus, only a handul of Parsian settlements and fortresses between Khosra and the capital are now under Luathbas governance; the Gubtas got the largest bit of Parsia for themselves.

"Sire, these are wonderful news! Our nation has dealt with one of our ancestral enemies! Shall we celebrate it along with people of Luathbas?"

A) Have a small feast at the palace, but that's all.
B) Throw a festival for the populace, the soldiers, their families - everyone! Party for all!!
C) Let's host a festival or two and in the meanwhile hire artisans to build a grand monument of our victory right here, in the capital!

You ask them if there's anything else they would want in return.

"Actually, there is. For decades we are in search of certain kind of dark blue gemstones of brilliant lustre and high hardiness. We have heard from travelrs that they come from east, so we first looked for them amongst the easterners, and some told us to look beyond the lands of Khanate. But we did, and yet nobody in Luathbas knows where such gemstones are to be found. If you could tell us where to look for them, we would surely lower our payment by a whole lot." You decide to...

A) Tell them that you know nothing about gemstones of that kind.
B) Ask them for a day to consult your books about gemstones from east of Luathbas.

You send a group of people old enough to had dealings with Hurthlings in the past to hopefully make it easier to reestablish contact with Hurthlings.

You fall terribly ill after spending one evening outside for a bit too long. Fever and terrible fits of coughing bring you pain and restlessness.

Your condition does not improve after a week, making your advisors and courtiers extremely worried about the continuation of Luathbas dynasty...

872 AD, Late Spring

But as the days grow longer and warmer, you finally overcome the lung illness and are back on your feet.

Just in time to receive a report from the envoys sent to the Hurthlings. Apparently, the remaining Hurthlings got news of death that killed all their brothers and sisters in Luathbas thirty years ago, but somehow they got their facts wrong and blame your family on killing them with 'dark magics'. The envoys say that the Hurthlings weren't particularily hospitable even to them.

Two days later, you receive a visit from a delegation of dwarves, brought to the castle by the messenger you sent last year. The group of smelly, hairy creatures all wear black and purple cloaks, and the dwarf with blue beard steps forward and bows respectfully.

"Greetings, Luathbas King. We heard it that you are in the need of our service, and so we come to offer them. But we were told that it is not artifacts you seek, but its our earthwork that interests you. May I express the joy of our Guildmasters, who were simply thrilled that we got a chance to show our ways with dirt and stone, as normally everyone just wishes for us to provide them with trinkets and baubles. The messenger told us that it is aquifer in profitable mines that you have problem with? It is truly a terrible thing, especially if the aquifers go two z-levels or deeper."

There's a confused silence amongst your courtiers.

"Well, let's just say that we know how to strengthen the earth and weaken the bonds of water in the soil. Of course, we will require payment, and I'm sure you know how much our kind demands for its masterful services."

A) Promise them that they will have the money the moment they succeed in their task.
B) Tell them that you can't pay them this time, and have to dismiss them.
C) Ask if they would want something else as a form of payment.
D) Ask about postponement of the payment for, say, 40 years maybe?

10750
"Um... uh. Maybe... maybe after this."

10751
"Not sure if it's right time to do so."

"Any advice on quick-romancing though??"

You're feeling generous this winter, and thus money and foodstuffs are sent to the countryside.

Except few really isolated settlements, everyone gets the supplies, and a crisis is averted.

871 AD, Midwinter

The Marshal himself wrote a report for you. He is proud to announce that Luathbas army, after winning several small skirmishes, is now laying siege to the Parsian capital along with your Gubta allies and even surprise reinforcements from Kashites. The ancient enemy of Luathbas, which was a threat for the last three centuries, is about to be utterly destroyed!

871 AD, Late Winter

Summary of trades done with Gubta show that despite the higher taxes, Luathbas merchants (and by proxy, Crown itself) still obtained hefty profits.

871 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings you the Scrolls of Kingdom Status for your perusal:

Happiness: 5
Population: 5
Economy: 4
Army: 6

Despite some worry from your courtiers, the Treasury is quite alright at the moment.

872 AD, Spring

"Another Hurthling sighting?"

"Yes, but this time it was by a hunter who travelled far to the northeastern mountains, from whence Hurthlings once came. He said that he saw some small peoples dwelling in mostly abandoned hill homes and furnished holes, but they threatened him with slings and domesticated dogs when he tried to approach. After he returned home, he talked with his village's elder, the elder sent a messenger to the governor of the region's city, and the governor sent a letter to us."

A) Send few men who had dealings with Hurthlings to the Hurthling valley in the past in hopes of re-establishing contact.
B) It's clear that the Hurthlings are not willing to come to Luathbas, and we should respect that by ignoring them.
C) Send a envoy speaking with your authority and a group of armed men to show that you're not afraid of Hurthling slings!
