CHATTY: "You're from Kassandra, aren't you? I thought you guys weren't coming for drinks, but I am glad to have some company." Max smiles.

"Hey, nice to hear that. Yeah, captain ain't big on synthol, and neither is our chief engineer. Our navigator, Tote, is helping them out with some computer core repairs and I had nothing else to do so I decided I might as well come over for a glass of synthol."

"Captain is a non-drinker?"

"Naw, he just believes synthol is inferior to real, bottled, aged stuff. You know, fermented juices and spirits from planetsides."

"I don't have any on board."

"Yeah, not surprised, usually that stuff isn't shipped out of the system and you have like no colonies in Beta Carotenii. You oughta ask some passing merchants, they sometimes have organic alcohol in their cargo manifest, you could get some from them."

"And you guys?" Max grins, and takes a sip before replying.

"I wouldn't pry into Captain's stash, but no, we're just fetching bulk cargo like other Barges. If you wanna find some people interested in small-volume trading, ask the Captains of Armed Merchantships. They're the ones that peddle stuffs around colonies and outposts and what-nots. They might have the stuff you might be looking for." You feel like you've learned something very important.

"Thanks for info, that's very helpful."

"Don't mention it."

A) "How's the rest of the crew doing, I mean, is there a chance they might show up?"
B) "No, I mean it, really, I rarely get patrons willing enough to chat about the workings of the space community."
C) Let him have his Capricorn.

You set the reminder for the asteroid impact alert and resume reading Zirconius series to at least get that done.

1236USY.4d/1m.1127h

The date is 666 United Space Year. A flotilla of unidentified starships emerges near the position of Hyperion-3, which was busy analysing the debris from the fight between itself and the Pink Galleon, the flagship of now-deceased Crime Lord Xusxus. Soon, Hyperion-3 is hailed and Crown Prince Borellion shows up. In a short speech, he mocks Zirconius and tells him that whilst he is grateful for removing the ever-quarreling Xusxus out of the picture, he can't let Zirconius go away. The battle occurs and while Hyperion-3 is able to shoot down several fighterships of the Crime Prince Borellion, his flagship, the Esmeralda, scores several hits on Hyperion, deactivating its targeting systems. Switching to manual targeting caused numerous misses while the Esmeralda and several remaining pirate fighters continue to pound against Hyperion-3. As the shielding network begins to fluctuate and break down, Captain Zirconius has an inner monologue whether to surrender or launch escape pods. Just as he is about to give an order to evacuate Hyperion-3 and prepare to light the surrender beacon, another Federal Corvette jumps out of emergency warp. It is identified by Chester-Beta42 as Alexander-5, captained by Meilo Timbe, Zirconius' fellow graduate from Federal Police Academy. Alexander-5 opens fire on the pirates, destroying the remaining fighters and crippling the Esmeralda. Zirconius threatens Borellion over the comms with destruction, and the defeated Crime Lord surrenders. The crew of Alexander-5 helps with repairs onboard Hyperion-3 whilst Zirconius and Timbe discuss the situation in former's ready room. Meanwhile, Computer Specialist Mikhaila Syarkova is able to analyze the communication core of 'Pink Galleon' that was destroyed earlier, and makes a startling discovery...

Thus ends Chapter 4.

You don't get enough time to ponder what to do when suddenly the main gate opens.

A short, tanned man in his late 20s or early 30s comes inside. His dirty blonde hair is a mess. His green-and-silver jumpsuit is tightly clinging to his body, showing that he is quite athletic and muscular. He looks around with deep blue eyes before turning to you.

"Heya, I'm Max. Fix me a Capricorn, will you?" He gets himself seated at the bar while you type the name of the drink into the console.

CAPRICORN: 151c

3 Shots of Skinjuice
Shot of Tropico
Shot of Lemonstrade

Serve in a tank glass with a cherry.

You prepare a tank glass, pouring in the cheap Skinjuice and adding the two more expensive synthols, giving the mix a yellow-green coloration, the cherry dropped inside contrasting rather heavily with it.

You pass the drink to Max, who eagerly lets you scan his credchip. (+151c)

You hail the approaching ship, and it picks up the hail after some seconds.

Quote
"Captain Heton of spaceship Kassandra speaking. Who is this?"

"Hello, Bartender Arnold here, our synthol replicators are functional, if you're interested in something to drink."

There's a brief silence, with some whispering in background, but you can't make out the voices.

Quote
"No, thank you. Is that all?"

"Yes."

"Alright. Kassandra out."

It seems you won't be having any customers after all.

Sensor system has adjusted probability of impact based on range, speed and computated trajectory of Uncatalogued Asteroid 1:

Probability of impact: 12.7% as of 1236USY.4d/1m.1120h

Estimated impact time window remains the same (1236USY.4d/1m.2000h | 1236USY.4d/1m.2010h)

You also check if there's any change to projected success rate of torpedoing the asteroid, but the computer notes no change on that.

It seems the impact probability is gradually going to zero, however.

A) Lets put the whole thing on hold till 1800 hours, then.
B) Lets ignore the alert, the asteroid wont hit the outpost anyway.
C) Gotta keep monitoring, you never know!

You decide to move the datapads to the command room, where you decide to stay in for now.

You set the console to maintain a scan of the asteroid and give you updates every 15 minutes.

You resume reading Captain Zirconius, Chapter 4.

You quickly make your way to the command center, trying to discern which console is sound the alert.

It is security console.

A yellow alert has been issued by the sensors.

Quote
POSSIBLE IMPACT EVENT == CAUTIONARY ALERT:

Uncatalogued Asteroid (approx.radius: 0.12ks, approx.range to target: 999.6ks, approx.composition: 98.9% ice) has been detected on a probable collission course with Outpost 254831, heading from within the inner Beta Carotenii system.

Probability of impact: 13.5% as of 1236USY.4d/1m.1035h

Impact probability alert logged for transmission to the regional SRC Headquarters with the daily automated subspace radio ping at 1800 hours.

Security console lists several options for you:

A) Ignore the alert completely.
B) Maintain active scan of approaching asteroid (it will continue to issue alerts every 15 minutes with updated data)
C) Activate photon torpedo launchers and direct fire against the asteroid now (although the console warns the accuracy is very low at current range)
D) Put the alert on hold until it get closer (the console offers to repeat the alert at 1800h today)

The theme of the series is extremely cliche, you have to note after hearing its blaring horns and trumpets once again.

You perk up, hearing an alarm that you haven't heard before.

The volume is obviously of cautionary level, rather than a full alert, but the tone itself is rather menacing.

A) To the command center!
B) Whatever it is, it can wait, like, 30 minutes, no?

1103
You head for the bedroom and lay down on the bed. You communicate to your wetware chip the desire to sleep for 30 minutes or so.

1236USY.4d/1m.1017h

You wake up from the nap, take a deep breath and stretch for several moments.

You feel better than before.

You check with the sensors station, but the entirety of Beta Carotenii is empty of starships.

A) Well, time to resume that bartending article!
B) Well, time to resume reading the SRC manual!
C) How about some Captain Zirconius?

1104
'Time to read on weapons and communications', you tell yourself.

You read quite a few pages and adjacent paragraphs, but you can't help but yawn from time to time. Your eyes also feel a bit heavy.

Still, you get through about 10% of material on SRC Outpost Weapons and Comms Systems. Which is not a lot, for four hours, you reckon.

A) They call it 'power-nap' and I'm gonna have one.
B) Let's switch topics to bartending trivia then, they're more interesting!
C) Time to relax with Captain Zirconius!
D) Nah, back to reading. I can do it! I know I can!

1105
You walk to the commstation.

Quote
"Louise of the Most Fortunate Occurence here."

"Good morning. How can I help you?"

Quote
"I just wanted to say goodbyes, bartending drone. We're departing in a minute. Enjoy your time here."

"Of course, sure."

Quote
"Also, I don't know what you did to Simon, but he wants to visit on our way back through Beta Carotenii. He rarely, well, he is rather wary of strangers, I mean... well, anyway, our navpath will be taking us through here probably on 9th. We will drop in by then. So, until next time."

"Until next time."

Quote
"Yeah. Most Fortunate Occurence out."

You wait a little bit just to make sure the sensors console pings you about the ship's departure.

1236USY.4d/1m.0552h

And it sure does.

Most Fortunate Occurence has undocked from your Outpost and is headed for Madagascar Jump Gate.

The outpost is yours and yours only.

A) Back to bartending trivia!
B) Actually, lets progress through Zirconius Series!
C) About time I start on those Power and Hull instructions!
D) About time I start on those Weapons and Comms instructions!

1106
You decide you had enough of manuals.

You fire up the bartending network and see if there's something interesting or useful in the articles.

1236USY.4d/1m.0522h

Apparently, Wóda is the only synthol that is based on actual alcohol, and one that dates from before the times of Galactic Federation and the Universal Calendar.

It has been brewed on planet Earth, homeworld of Humanity, for thousands of years before even humans left the surface to explore the stars. Seems very implausible, really.

1236USY.4d/1m.0550h

Partways into an article about a promo drinks named after Pacifica resort planet, you hear an alert.

It is not sensors - it is the commstation. Someone's hailing your station.

A) Nobody important I would assume.
B) Open hailing frequencies! Or whatever the saying goes.

1107
Time to finish the Life Support manuals!

1236USY.4d/1m.0449h

And its done! You've finished reading SRC Outpost Life Support Manuals, learning quite a lot about the maintenance and inner workings of these crucial systems. Repairing them should be a little easier now.

The remaining two parts of the gigantic SRC manual are Weapons and Subspace Communications, as well as Outpost Hull and Power Systems. You don't think you will truly master your Outpost until you read all of them!

Nothing stops you from doing just that!

...then again, the datapads aren't going anywhere, and neither are you, really.

A) Sooner I start, sooner I finish! Weapons and Comms next!
B) Sooner I start, sooner I finish! Hull and Power next!
C) I had enough studying; time to read edutainment bartender trivia!
D) I had enough studying; lets continue the Zirconius Series!

1108
You pace back to the personnel area and then to your quarters.

Sleep pod goes psssh, you enter, get comfortable, sleep pod goes psssh again.

1236USY.4d/1m.0215h

You wake up, and after stepping out of the sleep pod, you yawn and stretch. You don't feel tired, yet you don't feel well rested either.

Your wetware chip embedded in your brain notifies you thusly:

[MELATONINE PRODUCTION ADJUSTED. SLEEP PERIOD RESCHEDULING COMPLETE: 1945 TO 0145 HOURS STANDARD SPACE TIME]

Scratching at your cheek, you check the sensors; nothing came up during the last hour, and "Most Fortunate Occurence" is still docked at Fuel Pump #8.

Yawn.

A) Time to read on some bartending trivia!
B) Zirconius Series Chapter 4, was it?
C) Let's finish the Life Support manual first, I'm so close.

Food scarcity doesn't surprise me; in my forts I make a big stockpile of it, then go on expansion/building/prettyfying projects, and then I notice the food/drink stocks went below 3 digits... with 200+ populace. Woops!
