You decide to read through the datapad containing basic maintenance information.

You read on the matters of station operations, power flows, common tools and utilities used by maintenance crews. How to safely wield a plasma torch and laser cutter. How to handle computer archives and solve common onboard software problems. How to use hyperfoam injector, correctly align self-sealing stem-bolts, how to deal with plasma fires...

All this knowledge is really basic, but with it memorized within your wetware chip and your brain, you feel that your failures to repair equipment on station won't be as dangerous as they were before. You might still short-circuit something one day or another, but at least it won't blow up the power network across the station.

Having finished the read, you stretch and glance at the sensors - nothing within the system.

What now?

You set the furniture upright, pile bits of timber and cloth into the fireplace - no need to waste firewood for a while - and set the mugs and bowls on the shelves behind the counter.

You find a hay-broom and sweep the room and corridors and then get all this dust and sand outside.

And while you're out there, you look at both ends of the road. Not a traveler nor horse nor dust cloud in sight.

You come back inside and decide to...

A) ...prepare the lone bedroom for the visitors.
C) ...clear up broken and smashed furniture about the place.
D) ...begin cleaning up the backyard.
E) ...look around some more.

You unholster your energy fork and stab your assailant.

He screams in pain as his nervous system is wracked and rolls off you, writhing in pain.

A phaser blast to the neck by Wololi relieves him of pain, permamently.

"Acceptable, Σ-9." Sergeant Wololi says and then ducks from another barrage of phasers.

"Sonic pulser, go!" You unholster one of the spindly-looking pulsers, activate it for 3 seconds and lob it across the corridor.

The three Centaurians unfortunate enough to get caught in the radius don't even have time to scream as the sound pulse liquifies and splatters most of their organic matter across the walls.

"That's more like it. Let's go! We need to find others!" He shoots down other two Centaurians and leads you out of the galley.

The shooting continues.

The screams, the explosions, the body count continues.

"Hey."

But you know how to handle all this.

Phasers, pulsers, you've used them many times...

"Hey!"

Energy forks, close quarters combat, you've seen it all....


"Hey." Caesar leans over the counter, his face inches away from yours.

"Yes? Sorry."

"You were looking at me funny." He sits back with a smirk.

"Apologies. I hope it didn't last long.

"Oh, no, you just stared at me intensely for few seconds."

"Regarding our conversation, yes. I know how to handle phasers, energy forks, sonic pulsers, and I know basics of CQC and ranged combat. I was conscripted into military forces once. My programming is still intact." Caesar quirks a brow.

"Really? You're a drone? Apologies, but, color me impressed, I thought most military purged drones' wetware before their release into civilian living."

You try to remember something about that, only to get a sudden headache. You don't think you can remember anything else for some time.

You look at the main gate as it opens, and two SRC engineers enter, carrying datapads and a toolbox.

Caesar takes a sip of his drink and looks at the engineers as they approach the bar.

"Yo, you're Arnold, right?" The tall, burly engineer puts down the toolbox, and his fellow, a bit shorter than him, hands you two datapads.

"So, this here is standard SRC toolkit. Plasma torch, laser cutter, energy dampener, some screwdrivers, mecha-servo, a set of self-sealing stem-bolts if you need to patch some hull or whatever... yeah, this stuff should let you do minor repairs on your own. And here." He points at the datapads.

"Basic maintenance guide, and the other is space-side Outpost schematic compilation, including computer networks, power conduits, auxiliaries, and so on. Ought to keep you occupied for few days at very least."

"Thanks. I appreciate your help. Give thanks to the Chief on my behalf."

"Sure thing." The two wave at you before going for the gate.

"About time I get going, too." Caesar stretches a little, and takes another sip of his drink. There's not much left.

A) "You sure you don't want another drink?"
B) "Please come again."

You protect yourself, saying that you were defending yourself from hostile action. The commission listens attentively, for a brief while before the CJO cuts you off with a hand wave.

"Right." He says, typing something on his datapad. "We need to reach a verdict of whether this drone has suffered a defect that resulted in aggressive behavior against Paul Someland and his injury. As Chief Judgement Officer I will now collect judgement from the commission of five high-ranking officers of this station."

"Not guilty." Says Major Clarkier.

"Guilty!" Shouts Sergeant Percs, and he and Major exchange angry glares.

"I saw the footage. Not guilty." Chief Medical Officer Quan-Zu says rather dispassionately.

"Not guilty, what else?" Captain Guthenberg grumbles.

All eyes turn to Sergeant Wololi, who twirls his moustache thoughtfully.

"Wololi, the majority has been-" Captain O'ot says, and Wololi lets out a sigh.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. Not guilty." The moustachioed officer shrugs. O'ot takes his datapad.

"Right. Drone Σ-9, you have been declared without defect and therefore not guilty. Return to your post immediately."

"Yes sir." You stand up and leave the commission behind.

Your work.

Your maintenance.

Your slumber and feeding.

One day.

Two days.

Three days.

The red alert sirens interrupting your slumber period.

Your visit to the armory. Wololi and Percs yelling and handing out equipment.

Hand phaser, plasteel armor and helmet, two sonic pulsers, energy fork.

The horrendous rumble and lighting failure, bright white lights replaced with dim red ones.

The screaming. Communications lady announcing that the shipyard has been boarded by enemy forces.

Running around.

Putting up defensive positions.

Then silence.

Footsteps.

Figures in dark-teal armor and space helmets, and barrage of phasers.

The corpses of enemy soldiers and some drones.

You see A3's corpse. You see B20's corpse. You see two Delta Taurian soldiers, also dead.

You realize the contours of the over overturned table, made of light blue plasteel. You're in one of the dining rooms in the western half of the shipyard. You're kneeling behind cover along with Sergeant Wololi, who perks up when you two hear more footsteps.

"Find someone else for your labor camps you Centaurian fucks!" He yells, and peeks from above the table and exchanges shots, and you stand up and do the same.

And then the teal-armored person jumping over the table and slamming into you. You two fall to the floor, the phaser slipping from your grip somewhere, and you two begin struggling.

They are holding some strange black stick in one of their hands. Must be Centaurian Painstick, which you once saw on the presentation with Percs.

A) Seize the painstick and use it against the enemy.
B) Look for your phaser and use it against the enemy.
C) Unholster your energy fork and use it against the enemy.

Your name is Ed, and during the war you were a bard earning coin from soldiers and commoners alike, leaving just before hostilities would take place.

Grabbing what you believe was a piece of signpost, you take your knife and carve 'Ed's Beds for Weary Heads', and hang it over the front door.

You then enter the inn to inspect the building.

The dining's hall furniture is in sorry state. The remaining two tables are a bit in disrepair, and you find only eight stools, most of them by the inn's counter.

At least the well is intact - you pull up some water, and it seems clean and fresh.

Checking the basement where drinks and meats and other foods, should be stored - and you find some empty barrels, some smashed barrels, and quite a lot of empty space.

Looters? Previous owner? Marauding soldiers? Whoever cleaned this place, was thorough.

You grimace when you find that the holes in the roofs aren't the only problem. Out of six bedrooms, only one is serviceable; three others are basically roofless and the furniture is smashed. The remaining two have roofs but the furniture is either destroyed or gone. You check the wardrobe for bed linens and pillows, and find only few spares.

With a weary sigh, you go downstairs and check your purse. You have 6 golds, 13 silvers and 5 coppers.

Impressed with Yu Lan's military insight despite being only a scholar, Lord of Song employed Yu Lan as a General.

"Good!" He lunges at you. "Give me that!"

An accidental shot during the struggle. His screams of pain and awkward crying as the glancing shot sears some skin on his right palm.

His two buddies screaming and running in and yelling obscenities and subduing you.

The long wait in the cell. One hour. Three hours. Seven hours.

The commission of the ranking officers on the station.

You, sitting in the middle of the room, a lamp shining above you.

"We've reviewed the footage - how dumber that kid can get?" Says Sergeant Wololi, your shooting practice instructor, twirling his moustache. "He can't even disarm a drone."

"Still, officials planetside and the Colonel, when he returns, will see that as yet another attack of drones against their human masters." Says Chief Medical Officer Quan-Zu, scratching her bald head. "Ought we jail the drone, like always?"

"Are you stupid?" Wololi interjects rudely. "He grabbed a phaser that was pointing in his direction before subduing the drone or knocking the weapon out of his hand. The kid should be grateful the drone wasn't aiming at him specifically, because otherwise-"

"The drone should've surrendered the moment Paul got angry." Says Sergeant Percs, your CQC instructor. "Drones were programmed to be submissive, anything straying from that mental path is a sign of a defect. Simple as that."

"Of course." Snarks Captain Guthenberg, your unit's caretaker. "What do you propose, then, if you're so afraid of drones being 'defective'? That we put them on standby until Colonel aquiesces to wetware re-programming?"

"That would help!" Major Clarkier, the station's first officer, lets out a chuckle. "For Dragon's sake! That's sixth incident in past two months, yes, but that's barely above average! I ain't gonna allow you guys to take away fifteen percent of our fighting force because you don't wanna get yelled at by the Colonel when he returns!"

"Hear hear." Wololi eagerly agrees. "Especially that Centaurians are sending awful lot of their ships in this direction lately. Colonel's son or not, we need the drones to be ready to fight, not to sit in the cargo units."

"For the record..." Captain O'ot, the Chief Judgement Officer of the station, interrupts. "...we should at least hear the drone's story. It's a formality I need to see through." He activates his datapad and turns to you.

"What do you have to say, Σ-9?"

A) Protect yourself.
B) Accuse the human.
C) Say nothing.

E) Accuse the officers.

The ride to Kraaien was, too, calm, serene even. The somber silence followed the quartet, and the corpse they carried, thorough the roads until Kraaien, and the keep of the commander...

"Take Laudwen and forty soldiers. Secure the manor immediately. Tell Eik to visit the local Cloister and request Sisters to come preserve the body. I think we have a resident priest of the Light in town, get him here to commit the last rites. The three officers bowed and hurried out of the chamber, closing the heavy oaken door behind them. Gunther van de Wachttoren sat down at his desk again, then leaned into the chair, staring at the door with empty expression.

He took a deep breath, slowly rubbing his hands, his eyes looking around as if he was searching for something.

"I want to scream." He said after a brief moment, to nobody in particular, his voice heavy and tired out of the sudden. "But that, uh, that won't help us any right now. Cecilia?"

"Don't yell at me..." Cecilia murmured, turning her face away from her brother. Gunther shook his head, rubbed his palms against his face, took in a deep breath, and placed both hands on the desk.

Another period of silence followed as he stared at the furniture.
