Oh yeah, I went with full-on destruction. I don't negotiate with terrorists 8V

I hate gold gathering missions because I suck on them if elves and rogues aren't available :P

(I won Deal with Devil by spinning the wheel and getting 2 Golds in a row... one day before the deadline, lol).

~~Chapter 4: Deadly Shadows~~

33rd Vierzember
We have been holed up in the Governor's estate for two days now. Miss Shaelynn is now accompanied by the trio of travelers who helped us at Abado, while Chief Advisor have lent me the services of Flora Brandt and Altha Entlern, saying that a diverse team might help me in the long run. I have agreed with that reasoning.
Now however, it seems we finally can resume looking for clues; after two days of intense work, the Advisor's agents have located a possible hideout of some people connected to dissappearance of Raben, the massacre at Abado, and the spontaneous riot that was barely kept in check. We will be heading to the northern outskirts of Blumhart, to old catacombs dating to early Troian history. An agent named Iris will be leading us there.

Captain Astleich stopped the group behind few trees, and took a good look at the small stone buildings protruding from uneven terrain, surrounded by lines of overgrown tombs. He then turned toward the agent.

"Are there any entrances?"

//Iris Brandt is now in!

How do you have problems with Elven Treachery? Just get couple Paladins rolling: they have high defences, speed to catch elfs/rogues, and they will often seek out and destroy enemy buildings on their own.

It was the very first unlockable mission that I encountered and I remember passing it on first try :v

Lunord is much better for defense than Helia. Teleporting monks make best sentries.

"So be it."

Unfortunate report came from the southern hill-placed city. The governor's men has managed to mine out little of ores last year as well. He writes that if this will continue for another year, he will be forced to close these unproductive mines.

821 AD, Mid-Spring

As your wife goes into labor, you and the advisor pace about in front of her bedroom, waiting with fear in your heart.

After a while, one of the maidens who accompanied the healers leaves the room with a sad face. "I'm so sorry, my liege..."

Next day, rightfully angry about this, you gather your courtiers. You announce that there will be taxation of the temples if they do not apologize for their botched ritual.

Then, you also decide to...

A) Send an envoy to the lands far in the west, in hopes of contacting the dwarves and to plead that they lift the curse.
B) Advertise across the Kingdom for services of a traveling wizard; they do show up from time to time, and are known to be able to deal with even most powerful of harmful magic.

Upon your orders, the Army marches out to assault the bandit horde's hideouts.

The bandits are flushed out easily and attempt a counter-attack, but the Luathbas infantry, disciplined and trained, makes short work of them, leaving only a handful of survivors who fled into the woods. Dagdar, along with several other prominent criminals, are sentenced to death and executed.

820 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings you the Scrolls of the Kingdom Status, upon which you see:

Happiness: 4
Population: 5
Economy: 2
Army: 5

Well, a slight improvement for sure.

"My liege," the advisor intrudes into your reading, "Now that the peasants are again made docile, how about we tax them a little bit harder? Unless, of course, disbanding of part of the Army is what you wish for..."

A) Aye, let's squeeze some extra coin out of the commoners now that they are a bit more content.
B) Hmm, alright, let's disband part of the Army and recover some of supplies and coinage.
C) No to both of these ideas!

You ask the priests of all child/birth/family related gods to host a purification ceremony in an attempt to lift the curse.

Your family - along with your siblings who settled around the kingdom - are gathered in a large hall, and the priests begin the ritual. It takes hours while your family - including you - has to stand there patiently doing nothing.

After the ritual is done, you ask the priests if it was successful.

"Well, sire, there is only one way to find out!" The priestess of love winks at you, then absconds when you grimace at her.

820 AD, Autumn

Joyful news come from the northeast! The Hurthlings, wishing to repair their relations with humans, are scheduling a harvest festival out of their own supplies. Along with bountiful harvests across the kingdom, it is a prime opportunity to make it a thanksgiving festival to the gods as well, says the governor, and apparently the Hurthlings agreed to this plan without hesistation.

Therefore, without extra expenses, Kingdom of Luathbas might enjoy some revelry nowadays and population boom in the future!

820 AD, Mid-Autumn

Governor of Augas reports that the annual revenue caravan was safely delivered to our Parsian neighbours.

820 AD, Late Autumn

Village elders in the east report that banditry is on the rise. Some few hundred people are now known outlaws, and some whisper the name of 'Dagdar', a bandit king of some sort, being a leader figure for them. They offer some suggestions as to how deal with this problem. You agree with the...

A) Suggestion to have the Army march out and meet with the bandit horde in combat.
B) Proposal to have some of the Army remade into city and road guards.
C) Plan to offer large bounties out of the Treasury reserves to apprehend Dagdar and other more 'renowned' criminals.

The advisor just rolls his eyes and returns to work.

The governor of that city from the south reports that the miners had little success in procuring large amounts of ore; what was mined was used for local industries.

820 AD, Summer

Your wife goes into labor once more.

The child is born dead.

Few days later, you talk with your wife about this.

"No, it is not so difficult for elfs and humans to have children... stillborns do happen, but it is infrequent. I am sorry if I continue to dissappoint you, my liege." You reassure her that it is not her fault.

You and advisor spend the rest of the afternoon pacing about the library - you worrying if perhaps your seed is the cause, and the advisor reading books on procreation of humans with elfs - the amount of such books could be counted on fingers of one hand.

This goes on till late evening.

Suddenly the advisor stops in his tracks as if he was suddenly enlightened.

"MY GOOD LIEGE!" He shouts, unnerved by his potential discovery. "It is not the problem with the differences of anatomy, sire! It's the dwarves!!" You ask him to explain at once.

"Remember, my liege, when you were on the campaign in Augas, we and your Queen Mother wrote to you that the dwarves, who came to visit the tomb in the south, returned to our castle angry and demanding compensation for the tomb's defilement. Alas, we had nothing to give, so they 'cursed' us. Now, both your elven wife and the folk tales say that the dwarves are plague-bearers, friends of death, fungus, darkness, and all that. What if that dwarven curse was to make your family unable to have children? A disease - plague - of seed and womb?"

You can't help but think his logic is a little bit far-fetched, yet on the other hand - the dwarves did put down a curse, and your wife had three still births in three years in a row. This surely must be more than just coincidence.

Next day, during a meeting with courtiers and scholars, you decide to...

A) Ask the priests of the gods of life, fertility, family (and similar departments) to purify and clean your family from the dwarven curse.
B) Send an envoy to the lands far in the west, in hopes of contacting the dwarves and to plead that they lift the curse.
C) Advertise across the Kingdom for services of a traveling wizard; they do show up from time to time, and are known to be able to deal with even most powerful of harmful magic.

You advise the governor to mine around the city, and do not disturb the lives of those dwelling inside.

He later writes you a report in which his miners believe that amount of metals recovered will be small and therefore the revenues from this operation will be meager and not very systematic. He shall follow your advice, however.

819 AD, Summer

The spies in Lametania report that the royal family was forced to sign a humilitating peace treaty with that Damdamian Republic, ceding part of their southern territories and agreeing to pay tribute for next five years.

819 AD, Autumn

Annual report from governor of Augas have arrived; trade revenues ended in Parsian hands without incident.

819 AD, Mid-Autumn

Your elven wife gives birth again - to another stillborn.

All of the palace is either angry or depressed about this development in the royal family.

Your dejected advisor cannot help, and can only dispense with the old saying: "Third time's the charm, sire."

819 AD, End of the Year

After this rather uneventful - if not sad - year, the advisor brings his scrolls to you once again.

Happiness: 3
Population: 5
Economy: 2
Army: 5

He leans toward you with a curious expression...

A) No, no, and no - we won't be disbanding more of our troops.
B) Fine, let's disband some of our army if that will help with our money shortages.

You declare that there will be no further disbanding of the army, and the advisor notes that in his scrolls.

819 AD, Spring

Somewhat fortunate news arrive from the governor of a city in the southwest. His prospectors have determined that the hills upon which the fortified settlement is built, are rich in ores of copper and silver! This would be quite a boon if not the fact that most of the deposits seem to be laying under the houses and homesteads of the people, with some families living there for several decades already.

He is unwilling to proceed out of his own accord, and therefore asks the Crown for guidance in this matter. You decide that...

A) The peasants are to be relocated and the mining of precious metals is to commence at once!
B) Riches are not worth dismantling homes and lives of your subjects; no mining will be done in those hills.
C) Have the miners dig out in the hills surrounding the city, but the city itself is to be undisturbed.

EDIT: Added an obvious option, durr.
