Forum Games and Roleplaying / Re: SPAMKINGDOM: Houlandin II of Luathbas!

In your reply you once again offer to mediate some sort of agreement between the two.

Somehow, they arrive at your castle without managing to kill each other on the way.

You tell them that their dispute, once understandable per cultural clash, now have devolved into pointless bloodshed. You tell the Hurthling chieftain that it is important to pay taxes, even if it is against their traditions - and you tell the governor that Hurthlings have always been respecting humans since their settlement, and to repay that with oppression is just a stain on his honor.

You continue your talk for a while, and this softens their hearts.

"Noble hew-mon King is right!" The chieftain squeaks. "We have biin too stubborn in our ways, and we took yoor hospitality for granted!"

"I hath been too harsh toward these non-humans, sire. I apologize." You then help them reach an agreement, in which the Hurthlings will take the foodstuffs and livestock every year and sell them on markets near and far, collecting the tax money this way.

818 AD, Mid-winter

There is an outburst of joy amongst the courtiers when your elven wife goes into labor!

Then it turns into lamentation when the child is found to be a stillborn. Your wife is depressed and your mother infuriated at the loss of the child.

"Alas, sire." The advisor takes you out of Aolineniya's bedroom. "These things happen; sometimes the gods of family and life and fertility deem some children too weak to survive in the world, and thus end their struggle before it really begins. And, after all, Queen Aolineniya is an elf, and records of couplings between us humans and elves are seldom." He hums.

"Or, sire, perhaps it's just a matter of luck."

818 AD, Late Winter

The last of the festivals came to a conclusion, and governors' reports from around the kingdom indicate that the peasants have indeed been appeased with the extra venues that happened this year.

818 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings the Scrolls of Kingdom Status during particularily rainy afternoon.

Happiness: 3
Population: 5
Economy: 2
Army: 5

"As you see, my liege, we're still struggling in the sector of economy, as unfortunately there were no opportunities to fix that this year. Raising taxes would only irate the peasants again, so the best advice I can gives would be to disband more of our troops."

A) A sad necessity, but let's shrink our army once again.
B) Nay! We will find some other way to rejunevate our economy.

11987
You promise your elven wife that you shall do as she asks.

The same evening, a group of trusted soldiers, under the command of the Advisor, takes the scepter to the forest near the castle and digs a large hole where it is deposited and buried under lots of dirt and rocks.

818 AD, Autumn

The governor of Augas reports that the revenues from trade have been safely delivered to Parsian border, where their escorts took it to their king.

818 AD, Winter

The latter half of the year was quite peaceful, so of course something had to go awry by the winter.

Terrible news arrived from the northwest, where the Hurthlings live amongst humans.

Apparently, they did not follow the governor's instructions and tried again to pay with foodstuffs and livestock. This infuriated the governor, who tasked some soldiers with taking away some of Hurthlings' (meager) valuables.

Unfortunately, the Hurthlings were not going to let that happen.

In the clashes between their slingers and the governor's soldiers, there were thirty casualties amongst soldiers and over fifty amongst the little farmers, before the humans retreated. The governor once again sent a request of help with 'those stubborn, fat little critters' as he calls them in his letter.

A) Send an ultimatum to the Hurthling chieftain: pay taxes, or find a new home.
B) Reprimand the governor and order him to return Hurthlings' valuables at once.
C) Once again offer to mediate some sort of agreement between the two.

//EDIT: The game has a new, shorter and much catchier name than before!

11988
You arrive at her bedroom to talk with her.

"Oh, my beloved husband!" She speaks with a tearful voice. "The dwarves use dark magics to create these! Blood and souls and ashes are used to forge dwarven artifacts. And they can benefit you as much as they can spell your doom! I beg you, have the artifact buried deep in the soil. Their 'Earthern Mother' always accepts their artifacts and dissolves their metal frames and dissipates their dark magicks."

A) Appease your wife and have the artifact buried deep under the ground.
B) Appease your wife by the way of selling the artifact - you paid a lot for it after all, and Treasury would surely welcome some coin.
C) Refuse to have the artifact removed.

11989
You eagerly accept such a beautiful bride!

"Romuald!" Queen Mother looks shocked and appalled, but she knows that she has no power over your decision - if she was still your regent, then yes, but not anymore.

"The Princess' name is Aolineniya, good King. Take care of her, and may the gods bless you for your kindness and hospitality." The Princess, who looks not more but few years older than you, approaches your throne and kneels before you in respect.

In less than a day, the rest of her group dissappears.

You marry the elven princess in a celebration that draws lotsa attention, for obvious reasons. Later, you are able to fully ascertain that your wife does indeed have a beautiful body!

818 AD, Summer

The advisor appears suddenly during your breakfast of eggs and sausage.

"My liege, sorry for the interruption, but something rather... unexpected happened. Your beloved wife was touring the Treasury, and when she found the dwarven scepter you bought from the westerners, she suddenly seized it, ran outside with a shriek and cast the prized artifact into the moat! She is currently in her bedroom, screaming that she didn't know we're 'friends of the death-bringers, the filthy dwarves'. The guards are currently searching the murky waters for the artifact."

Well this is awkward.

A) Talk with her about the whole issue.
B) Have her locked in her bedroom and warn her that such careless fits are unbecoming of a Queen.

11990
You request that some of the Army is to be relieved and acquired money is to be spent on festivals.

"As you wish, my liege."

818 AD, Spring

'Friendly people' from Lametania report that the kingdom is having hard time (read: is getting its ass kicked) by invaders from further south, from a place called 'Damdamian Republic'. Ha, good for them!

...the heck is a Republic though?

818 AD, Mid-Spring

A particularily cold day, mysterious travelers appear at the gates of your castle. They are all fair-skinned, blonde haired, humans. Amongst them is a smaller, hooded figure. The castellan of the castle allows them entry and the group politely asks for an audience, and they are given one.

They say that they come from a distant land far to north and west, behind many mountains and dark forests. They seek shelter for their lady, a Princess, who hath lost a civil war and by the law of their people, is to be executed. However, her escape was possible and she fled for long time.

You assume it's the hooded person.

"We wish for our Princess only a good life and refuge from the unforgiving country that is our homeland. As we passed through your Kingdom, we heard that you, good King of this land, still do not have a wife. Please, will you accept her, a disgraced but noble young lady, as your wife?"

"That is absurd!" Your Queen Mother speaks suddenly. "My son will choose his wife, and he will surely not be interested in noblewoman who fell from grace. Marriage is to bring advantages for the Kingdom, or at least the family, not to please a bunch of strangers from nowhere!"

The advisor coughs.

"It will be His Majesty's decision, of course, but can we see this 'Princess'? As the sages say, 'one should not buy a cat in a bag'." The blonde men speak amongst themselves, and then, after giving a respectful bow to the hooded figure, pull her hood down. She has a fair skin, lovely blue eyes, soft pink lips and...

...are those pointed ears??

A) Witchcraft! Fanciful creatures! We already have problems with dwarves and hurthlings, we don't need elven nobles fleeing a civil war on top of that!
B) Tell them that you're not interested, but that they, and their Princess, can stay in your Kingdom for a while.
C) Happily accept this one-in-lifetime opportunity to have an exotic (and to be honest, quite pretty) bride!

11991
3 B 2 A 1 C, but people are visibly split over this, so I will wait for couple more votes cast.

11992
You offer the governor to negotiate between him and the chieftain, and the two arrive at your court in few days.

Quote
3*

The negotiations didn't go well. The Hurthling chieftain tried to defend the old ways of his people, the governor pointed out that they were now part of Luathbas and not independent peoples anymore. After a while, the two left, with the governor telling the chieftain to find a way to pay proper taxes next year.

817 AD, Midwinter

A troubling report came from the south; peasants in the region, due to unhappiness and the draft, attacked the local officials and the garrisons, and calmed only after some bloody 'pacifying' that saw over two thousand people dead or imprisoned.

817 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings you the Scrolls of Kingdom Status.

Happiness: 2
Population: 5
Economy: 2
Army: 6

He is not happy about these numbers either.

"My liege, the peasants are unruly and the economy is suffering. Per the treaty that you have signed with Parsia, we won't see extra revenues from Augas for ten years!" He sighs.

"Now that we're not at war with anyone, we can disband part of the army to relegate supplies and wages to better our economy; or we can do that and then spend the recovered money on hosting some festivals so that the peasantry doesn't pick the country apart. What is your decision, sire?"

A) Disband part of the army to heal the economy a little bit.
B) Disband part of the army to recover money, then spend that on festivals and venues for the peasants.
C) Do nothing - we will (somehow) manage without such extreme measures.

11993
You agree to the counter-proposal.

Therefore, it is written, that Augas province shall deliver its revenues to Parsia for next ten years, and then Augas shall become part of Luathbas.

You and Tata write down this and extra copy, both scrolls having the same treaty in the writing of the west and the writing of the east below it. They you sign it; you by pressing your signet into molten wax, Parsian Grand Lord by pushing a painted stone square seal against the scrolls.

You are then let to return to Abur while trumpets around you muster the Parsians to begin preparations to leave. You then return to the fortress, where the garrison and commanders explode in cheers, as the war was over. Amongst the cheers, is the new nickname of yours, bestowed upon you by the rejoicing soldiers - "The Guardian".

Now was time to prepare to return home!

817 AD, Late Autumn

As you are about to leave the Abur Fortress, another messenger arrives from Luathbas.

Apparently, things aren't that fortunate back home!

The dwarves, who came to visit the tomb, went back to the Capital to complain that the ancient protective spells were purified, and that allowed some adventurers or other grave-diggers to plunder the tomb. As the Treasury couldn't pay the dwarves the money they requested, they 'cast a curse' and left.
Also, due to lack of revenues from war-ravaged Augas, the treasury is mostly empty, and the civilian population, riled up about this - and the army drafting earlier this year - is causing lots of trouble.

You decide to return to the capital immediatelly.

Congratulations! Houlandin II completed his first military campaign.

He will return home now and the normal flow of events will be resumed.

817 AD, Winter

Queen Mother and the advisor congratulate you on your successful campaign.

Back home and you already have to deal with another issue. The governor of the northern lands is complaining about the Hurthlings; second year in a row they're attempting to pay the regular coin taxes with vegetables and livestock (he let them last year, just once). He wishes for the King to decide what to do about it (and the governor provides few options).

After brief consideration, you decide to...

A) Extort proper taxation from Hurthlings.
B) Evict the Hurthlings unless they start paying with money.
C) Force the governor to accept their 'taxes', and then sell them at the market.
D) Offer to negotiate between the Hurthling chieftain and the governor.

11994
You offer to give Parsia the revenues from Augas for five years straight, but then Augas would become part of Luathbas fully.

The Parsian Grand Lord strokes his beard thoughtfully, his eyes staring at the side of his tent.

"The King wishes the peace as this war strains our Army too much. But our great land has lots of expenses to cover. Five years is not enough! Make it ten, young King, if you wish to see me accept your offer!"

You...

A) Accept!
B) Decline!

11995
You agree to be taken to Great Lord Tata for negotiations. You then, despite the misgivings of commanders and soldiers alike, take a small bodyguard detail and follow the lone Cataphract back to his camp.

The Parsians give you unhappy looks, some of them death glares, but no one dares raise a hand at you. You are finally taken before Grand Lord Tata, who is tall, broad in shoulders, has cold blue eyes and impressive, triangular black beard; this with his olive skin and red-black robe give him look of a demon of old lore.

"Welcome, Houlandin II, King of Luathbas, Thorn in the Foot of Parsia, slayer of Lord Amar. For once you have listened to reason." He invites you to drink something from a small metallic cup, but, wary of what you learned about the negotiations with Parsians, decline.

"Ha! Wise choice. Let's begin the talks, then." He sits himself on the carpet and you sit as well. Between you, there's a low table on top of which there's naught but vellum and charcoals.

You two debate about the possible settlement of the dispute, the needs of both countries, the legal and traditional claims to the land. It takes an hour before you two manage to reach some sort of mutual understanding. Finally, you offer the Parsian Grand Lord, and in extension, his King, an offer of...

A) Passing the ownership of Augas back to Parsia, but after five more years of it being in Luathbas' control.
B) Passing the ownership of Augas back to Parsia, but after fifteen more years of it being in Luathbas' control.
C) Sharing the ownership of Augas, and splitting the tax revenues; one year they will land in Parsian treasury, second in yours.
D) Giving Augas' revenues to Parsian treasury for five years, before the province would be incorporated into Luathbas fully.

11996
The lone cataphract is let into the fortress.

He asks for you, as he has a message to deliver.

"To the King of Luathbas, who continues to be a painful thorn in our foot! Come forth to the camp of Grand Lord Tata, as he wishes to negotiate with you. Refuse, and there will be bloodshed that shall end in your ignoble defeat!" The military commanders believe that Abur Fortress can get through another siege just as it did last season, and therefore there is no need to negotiate yet. Ultimately, however, the response is in your hands.

A) Accept the invitation to talks and go to the enemy camp with mandatory bodyguard detail.
B) Refuse the invitation! There shall be no talks!

11997
You order the army to return to Abur.

There are some grumbling voices, aaaand maybe just few notions of having 'cowardly King', but nothing major comes out of this.

Within five days, the Army is back at the Abur fortress. Scouts report that the northern army, the smaller one, that was camping out after the prior battle, has now moved eastwards, boosting the number of the one advancing from northeast.

Next morning, the advancing/pursuing Parsians arrive as well. They take half-encircling positions from north through east to south, albeit sentries on the towers report seeing riders all over the fortress' vicinity.

And then, there's nothing. Morning moves to afternoon, afternoon into evening. As the sun finally sets behind the hilly horizon, a lone Cataphract approaches the gates of the Fortress.

A) Let him in, as it seems to be a messenger of sorts.
B) Have archers shoot some arrows near him to clearly state our intent!

Don't we need a new thread, considering Squeegy didn't update since Septermber 2015 and wasn't online since this June? v:

11999
You give order to march out eastwards to secure the border and mayhaps finally finish this campaign once and for all!

Several days later, when the army under your leadership is mid-way to the border outposts, you're given a report that mentions a large Parsian army moving from northeast. It consists of strong core formed by Parsian Cataphracts, numerous spearmen units on both flanks, with a long line of archers stretching behind this army. Large amount of supply wagons was spotted as well.

If numbers are to be believed, the Parsians have between one and half, to twice the numerical advantage over your forces, which means you could be soon facing up to 7000 Parsians.

A) Retreat! Retreat! We will hole up in Abur Fortress for another season or two, if need be!
B) We make our stand here! Our forces will take best terrain and prepare for battle!

12000
A bit later...

Jann, Cecil and Alissa were brought to meet with Governor per his request.

"You helped Shaelynn and the Captain, and for this I am grateful." He twirled his moustache.

"Would you consider becoming her bodyguards? For the duration of the investigation, at least... but even after it is completed, and if you will not have anything else on mind, in terms of employment, I am sure that my household would welcome you all as permament staff."
