You decide to split your forces; half will remain at Abur, the rest will ride forth to harass the sides and rear of the advancing Parsian horde to the best of their ability, and if they can try and relieve the sieges of the minor outposts, so much the better.

6 how do you guys have all this luck in this game, honestly

You receive reports that your raiding parties were extremely effective; one for example managed to set fire to their supply of timber, destroying most of it. Others caused approximately a thousand of casaulties against the rear guard, Parsian scouts and some heavy damage to the supply wagons during 'Battle of Gokart'.

There are also reports of attempted relieving of the sieges, alas, you will have to read these reports later - the golden banner of Parsian Kings flutters in the hills east of Abur!

The siege begins!

Quote
5*

The initial attack against Abur fails and the Parsian army loses hundreds if not thousands soldiers who ineffectively try to scale the walls with mere ladders and only two siege towers (which get set on fire by your archers anyways), accompanied by seldom-firing catapults.

The Fortress however soon suffers from problems as the Parsians successfully poisoned the underground stream that provides fresh water to the fort. Your men have to rely on thinned alcohol, and You know how that goes in the long run.

The Marshal believes that, while Parsians are dragging the timber from the east, this is a prime opportunity to strike at the besieging forces! After brief consideration, you...

A) Agree, and have Luathbas cavalry storm the main encampment of the Parsia.
B) Agree, and have Luathbas forces break through western - the weakest - part of Parsians encirclement.
C) Thank the Marshal for his proposal, but reject it, and say that for now, it's better to wait and see how the situation develops.

You declare that peasants are to be drafted into the new corps and you will personally lead that to Augas province.

Congratulations! Houlandin II is now on a military campaign! During the campaign, the range of events will be very limited (in this case, related to Parsia and/or war with it), you won't be making choices about the Kingdom and the End of the Year reports (and possible choices) won't be available to you.

The advisor and Queen Mother Ciri shall deal (for better or worse) with any potential events that might happen during your stay in Augas province.

Onwards!

817 AD, Mid-Spring

You arrive at the Fortress of Abur, located just north of the largest city of Augas Province.

The forested lands and grassy meadows of your homeland are gone; replaced with more rugged, rocky shrublands of West Parsia.

The Luathbas soldiers stationed in the garrison cheer, seeing their young King arrive!

817 AD, Late Spring

Less than a month later a messenger arrives from the easternmost keeps; the Parsians are on the move, and their smaller forces are besieging few smaller outposts. The main body of their army is marching westwards toward Abur.

The scouts report that most of it is spearmen and short bowmen, with a strong core of the fearsome Parsian Cataphracts, used as shock cavalry to devastating effect.

Spies have found out that the Parsians also are bringing lots of supplies and ample amount of timber from their northern forest, definitely to construct lots of siege equipment (as most of Parsian locales are low on forested areas).

The Marshal and commanders convene with you, and you decide to...

A) Prepare Abur for a lengthy siege; after all, we didn't let that old engineer to improve the fortifications for them to not be used nowadays!
B) We shall march out with most of our glorious, numerous Army and meet the Parsians head-on.
C) Leave half the forces at Abur; the rest will be sent eastwards and tasked with harassing the Parsian horde and/or trying to break the sieges on the less important outposts.

B, mercs are always helpful but we have no idea if this scepter is actualy useful.

Clean your glasses, mang ;p

12019
You write a reply in which you politely ask him to go make love with his own backside.

816 AD, Mid-Winter

The dignitary from the west arrives with 2550 strong and well-trained men, and with a large chest containing an ornate platinum scepter, alledgedly, of dwarven origin.

Queried about its powers, the dignitary explains that the scepter was commissioned by the Queen's great-grandfather to deal with his chronic sicknesses, and since then, he and his descendants suffered from nary a disease except an occassional cold.

You welcome the men into the Army and keep the Scepter guarded in a vault, as it seems it might be projecting a benevolent aura of sorts rather than bestowing powers upon a single individual, like your father's necklace did.

816 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings you his enigmatic scrolls with equally enigmatic numbers:

Happiness: 3
Population: 6
Economy: 3
Army: 7

Terrible developments are reported on the eastern front; the Parsia have finally risen from the murky swamp of its civil war (that took them a long while), and the spies of Augas commander believe that the Parsian king is preparing a huge offensive to regain the wealthy province of Augas!

The commander of the Augas forces demands more men, and hopes that you will grace the Army with your own presence to boost their morale, as even with the improved fortifications protecting them, some are rather nervous about upcoming conflict.

About the reinforcements, you decide to...

A) Draft peasants into the Army.
B) Hire even more mercenaries.
C) Do nothing, except maybe just shift some men from Luathbas to Augas province.

And about the request for your presence, your reply is...

A) That you will eagerly stand side-by-side with your men against Parsian armies!
B) That, unfortunately, important affairs of governance keep you in the Capital.

//This is a multi-choice event; posts with only partial votes will be ignored.

12020
You agree to hire their mercenaries and buy the scepter of the Queen. The dignitary cannot believe your generosity for a brief moment, and once he regains ability to speak, he profusely thanks you and bows numerous times on his way out the door, promising to have both men and the artifact delivered by the end of the year.

816 AD, Winter

Oh boy, what a joyful occassion - a letter from King of Lametania have arrived.

Half of it is insults, per usual. In the other half, he pushes the usual claims for the southern territories, the lands that your predecessor have determined to be legally Luathbas' possessions by now. You can agree willingly or he will try to take them by force...

...or, he writes, he might be willing to return the dwarven necklace of your slain father to you, because he knows how pricey these things are, and that your family must sure feel sore that such a prized artifact has fallen into the hands of his half-brother.

The advisor and your Queen Mother debate about it for a while, and finally you decide to...

A) Refuse to give the southern lands to Kingdom of Lametania.
B) Agree to give them the lands they want for free.
C) Agree, reluctantly, to trade the southern lands for your father's dwarven necklace.

12021
You write him that his priests are to clear the site but otherwise the burial mound is to be left undisturbed.

816 AD, Autumn

The yearly transport of chests filled with coins arrives from Augas province.

816 AD, Mid-Autumn

A dignitary from a small kingdom in the west arrives at your court.

The Kingdom in question is in dire need of money after a long and exhausting conflict with Kiwi Kingdom, and therefore its King is looking for a deal. The dignitary have visited Luathbas because he heard that you are often hiring mercenaries to help with your wars, and therefore the faraway Kingdom would be willing to send the less-attached and more adventurous of its soldiers into your service for money.

The dignitary also mentions that the Queen has a family heirloom, a platinum scepter of dwarven origin, that could be sold to you. Of course, that would cost you more than mercenaries. After consideration, you shall...

A) Accept the deal of money for mercenaries, but do not buy the scepter.
B) Buy the scepter for a hefty amount of coinage, but pass on the extra soldiers for the Army.
C) Agree to hire both the western mercenaries and to buy the scepter, because you are feelin' rich and generous.
D) Politely decline both the mercenaries and the scepter.

General Discussion / Re: The Dream Thread
« on: August 16, 2016, 02:13:38 am »
Apparently I was dream-watching 108 episode yaoi anime of sorts with animation from early 2000's (which is when I watched most of anime, so I guess my subcounscious is nostalgic of that period??)

The basic cast was tall, dark and handsome time-traveling (more like 'one-way trip from future' travel) dad of a submissive blonde teen boy; there was blonde/white-haired anti-hero antagonist to the time-traveling dad, and robo-tentacles white-haired alien bishie overlord, all this few decades into future, tops.

Ep 1 had the backstory for time-traveling dad and blonde anti-hero; apparently they grew up under old kung-fu master and the bad blood between them stems from their years under the tutor. In the 'modern' time the time-traveling dad meets with his (gay) son, and hilarity ensued cuz the son thought the time-travel dad was some random guy hitting on him. The ending of this ep had a giant asteroid smash into San Francisco bay, and that meant the arrival of white-haired alien bishie overlord with robo-tentacles.

Ep 2 had the aforementioned anti-hero backstory 'from the future', where he was almost killed by time-travel dad, but then alien bishie overlord had him roboticized. This caused the time-travel dad to travel to the past. Second part of the ep was the alien bishie overlord wrecking a military base chasing the gay teen son and the anti-hero; by the end the anti-hero was all beaten up and the gay teen son caught in the slimy tentacles of the alien overlord who declared that the teen will have his tentacle kids.

...and then I woke up .<'

In your first decree you allow monetary expenses for recruitment of traveling mercenaries and adventurers and send them to eastern front.

This proves a good idea, as the wealth of Augas province attracts many sellswords, and not just for the money promised for joining the Army ranks.

816 AD, Summer

An interesting report arrived from the south.

Apparently, while mining a new deposit of copper in some hills, the miners of the local governor stumbled upon an ancient tomb! Apparently, it gives the workers creeps and some unfriendly aura emanates from it. The entrance is intricately detailed and covered in runes, which the governor's scholar determined to be dwarven in origin.

The governor couldn't decide what to do with it and therefore asks You for a suggestion. In your reply to the governor, you tell him to...

A) Immediatelly bury the tomb under rocks and abandon the site.
B) Have some priests purify the tomb, but do not open it and then continue mining nearby.
C) Have some priests purify the tomb, then open it and mention that by law the Crown claims half the treasure if any is found by the governor and his men!

You meet with Duke Parappapos head-on.

Your sword misses the target; his mace does not.

The world spins around you as you fall from your horse and crash on the ground with one of your eyes not seeing anything and the other one looking as through fog.

Your body feels heavy and you have trouble breathing.

But this all slowly passes as darkness engulfs you...

You are Romuald, son of Houlandin. The regency of the advisor and your Mother hath now ended, and you ascend the throne. Your father was a good ruler, and he died honorably, therefore you see no reason to not take on the name of Houlandin II.

Quote

The Regency period governed fairly well; the losses of the southern territories were regained by 813 AD (and Lametanians since then did not try again); the Augas province, seeing the completion of the advanced fortifications, held well despite numerous attacks that occured since 812 AD. The relations with Hurthlings were good and many time they have provided your people with their knowledge, increasing the foodstuffs and thus giving ground to population boom.

According to your mother, you are much more charismatic than your deceased Father, albeit you are not as educated as he was. Some like to joke that the power of that dwarven necklace, now in possession of Lametanian royal family, have rubbed off onto you.

Urgent report from Augas!

Quote
3*

The Army suffered numerous losses during last few weeks! They need reinforcements!

A) Therefore we shall provide them - draft peasants into the Army ranks!
B) Therefore we shall provide them - buy the arms of mercenaries for the Army!
C) Do nothing about this.

12026
You send a messenger in which you offer to negotiate.

Next night, under cover of darkness, Duke Parappapos arrives in your tent, and you two sit down for some secret discussion.

Quote
3*

You tell him that the claim of his half-brother is weak, that you both have evenly matched armies, which will result in a lengthy bloodshed to determine the victor. You try to appeal to his conscience and logic, and then you even attempt a bit of praise. As the moon passes its zenith, Duke Parappapos makes his decision:

"These are all fine points, but I have a goal to achieve, and I support my half-brother. We shall battle tomorrow, and I wish you, well, not victory, but at least some good luck." He then leaves, and you prepare for battle that shall occur next morning!

As the peasants elsewhere begin working on the fields, the horns announce the beginning of the battle!

Quote

The initial skirmishes go very badly for your Army! The Lametanian forces find an early opportunity to press against your flank and deal lots of damage.

Quote
2

Then a small cavalry unit breaks through the formation in front of your position and charges towards you. You see the crest on the armor of the man leading the charge - it's Duke Parappapos! You may flee to save your life (and put (un)funny thoughts in the minds of your soldiers), otherwise it's time to put on your helmet and BE A MAN.

A) Fleeee! I dun wanna die after just ten years on the throne!
B) CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGE!!!!

12027
You assure the Marshal that this time you will personally lead your men into combat, and promise to bring glory and victory upon them! The Marshal cries a bit, touched by your noble declaration.

In few days time, you arrive at the Army camp at the border between the southern lands and the Capital. Your army numbers 6000, mostly spearmen and swordsmen backed by units of light cavalry; the spies and scouts believe that Lametanian army consists of about 5000 to 7000, a large percentage of it being swordsmen backed by formations of dedicated archers.

On the evening of the same day you learn that your opponent in charge of Lametanian army is no one else than Duke Parappapos himself; half-brother of current King from previous marriage. Is there anything you wish to do before the battle?

A) Nay - TO BATTLE!!
B) Invite Duke Parappapos for peace talks - let's try and see if we can solve this in a diplomatic way!
C) You remember something about old tradition of disputes being resolved by one-on-one duels of the chieftains. Maybe, just maybe, we can invoke it today?

12028
You therefore declare that large families with many sons are to provide fresh recruits for the Army, and those who resist will be taxed extra for not fulfilling their duties!

The same day, the Marshal requests an audience with you.

"MY GOOD LIEGE! Shall you come along with me and the new recruits, and provide leadership in the upcoming battle? After all, you are expected to lead the forces from time to time!"

A) AFFIRMATIVE! I shall travel south to lead my men to GLORY AND VICTORY!
B) Apologies, my dear Marshal, but I seem to have caught a cold, and therefore cannot fight in the coming battle!

12029
The advisor notes your approval and then sets out to work.

811 AD, Spring

The inevitable have finally happened; Kingdom of Lametania have invaded the southern territories!

Your Army is now keeping them contained, but the military demands reinforcements, as a major battle is up ahead!

A) Draft some peasants into the army!
B) Recruit more mercenaries!
C) Send a reply in which you express that the Crown has utmost faith in their abilities to defeat the Lametanians with the current numbers.

12030
You eagerly welcome the little guys into your Kingdom. The chieftain and his family bow thousand times while slowly walking toward the throne room's door.

Their self-made census list arrives later; apparently, you have 1044 new subjects as well as 49 cows, 28 donkeys and 10 ponies.

810 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings his yearly scrolls along with summaries of riots, incidents and other unfortunate happenings that happened this year due to shortage of coinage. The high taxes were announced to be reduced, now that the Treasury was filled up somewhat.

Happiness: 2
Population: 5
Economy: 4
Army: 4

"The problems of the Treasury and the high taxation have riled up the populace. Now that we recovered somewhat, and the Augas province stable and secure, mayhaps we should spend some money and schedule some extra festivals to cheer up the peasantry?"

A) Yes, let's fix up the bad mood in the kingdom somewhat.
B) Nay! We didn't earn all this coinage to spend it right away!
