Your reply, containing the rejection of the demands, is sent back to Lametania.

810 AD, Winter

You receive a report that a horde of traveling hurthlings, about a thousand if not more, have passed through the hills in the northeastern Luathbas and is camping in the lowlands.

As far as you know, Hurthlings are small, hairy and jovial creatures that are known for having some expertise in agriculture and possessing rather lengthy lifespans. They also eat a lot and dislike any kind of oppression - and if threatened, they can be both stubborn and very hard to deal with and move from the place they decide to call home.

Shortly after the report, a short, toothy, round-faced Hurthling chieftain, clad in simple chainmail and pink cloak, arrives at your court, with his very fat wife and three (rather comically) large-eyed children in tow.

"Griitings, noble hew-mon sirreh!" He bows in respect, and his family does that as well. "We be siiking lands to settle at, as the scary, ugly trolls have taken over our bootiful valley! Certainly yoo could spare us some fertile hills and miidows, yeh? We promise to till the land and accept your rule over us and be frends to your hew-mon subjects, if yoo agree to help us in our plight!"

A) Fanciful races are always, sooner or later, source of problems! Sorry little fat people, but you need to find your new home somewhere else - and far from Luathbas.
B) D'aww, how could anyone reject the pleas of such lovely small peoples like you?? Of course you're welcome to settle in our lands!

You send the response with the Lametanian messenger, asking their King to provide legal proof for his demands.

The caravan of revenues from Augas arrives, and all the courtiers gasp at the size and splendor of it! The governor's assistant proudly presents the account ledgers and scrolls of taxation, all filled with rather large numbers. Coffers full of various coins are moved into the Treasury!

810 AD, Mid-Autumn

The reply from King of Lametania have arrived!

You ignore the first quarter, which is mostly insults, and concentrate on the latter, plus extra two scrolls describing some historical accounts, dating - phew! - back to 600's.

You go through the documents. They are all valid of course, but the claim by Lametania for the lands in question stands very weak today; it's been too long since Luathbas have acquired those lands, the territory back then was only partly Lametanian, and in your own royal archives there is also a record of a Lametanian chieftain passing his village to 'a Northerner '(definitely of Luathbas birth)'who saved his daughter from a giant red boar'.

Therefore, you can safely reject the claim on the legal grounds - you can expect the Lametanians to not accept this judgement, of course.

You write another reply for King of Lametania, in which...

A) You, despite the legal claim being rather weak, accept the request and agree to pass the southern territories, along with their population, to Lametania.
B) You explain that you read through all the documents, and reject his weak, if not obsolete, claim for the southern lands of Luathbas.

The taxes shall be kept higher this year as well.

810 AD, Spring

It's 10th anniversary of the toppling of the Tyrant, and a celebration would be a good thing to host if only the kingdom had any money to cover the expenses.

810 AD, Mid-Spring

The dwarves arrive at your throne room, bringing a large ornate necklace; each eye adorned with a different gemstone of proper size. They ceremonially put it on your neck. You feel a sting of some strange power deep inside you.

The powerful magical artifact, Dwarven Necklace of Persuasion, is now your property.

The dwarves then pack up and leave, taking the money and their earthly smell with them.

810 AD, Late Spring

A letter arrives from the governor of Augas. The Parsians' activity along the border seems to be non-existent, and the stability in the region have invigorated the trade! There's a high chance that revenues from the trade taxes might be better than usual!

810 AD, Summer

A report from the south have arrived; at the Ashandell Keep, there was a revolt.

Part of the garrison, afraid about their payments (due to the state of royal Treasury), attempted to take over the fortress. However, the 'Loyalist' faction have fought bravely and secured the fortress for you. However, with six hundred dead, and thrice that number of wounded and detained, the Army took a severe blow to its strength.

810 AD, Midsummer

Bad news come from the cities in the north; the high taxes have angered the populace to the point it all burst up in riotings. City mayors sent reports of casaulties and the total amount of dead nears almost three thousand.

810 AD, Late Summer

A letter from the King of Lametania (son of the previous one, who invaded the south of Luathbas several years ago) have arrived, brought by a messenger.

It's contents are mostly insults about your family and boasts of Lametanian army's strength. Finally, you are being requested to hand over the disputed southern lands, or Kigndom of Lametania will take them by force.

You decide to write a reply, in which...

A) You agree to hand over the southern lands, and its population, to Kingdom of Lametania.
B) You refuse to comply with his threats, and politely ask if that swine that is his mother is still alive, because you don't really remember the insignificant peoples.
C) You demand that Lametania provides legal proofs to the claim, if there are any legal proof for ownership in the first place.

12034
You tell the dwarves that you will be paying for the necklace at once.

You and them then write down a lengthy contract document (and a copy of it for dwarves), in which you detail the sum of coins as payment.

When you write down your name on the document, the dwarves exchange some words in their language, before turning to speak with you again.

"Now we shall descend into one of your dungeons, where we shall work and craft for next hundred days, and after those we shall present the enchanted necklace for you. Then they leave the throne room, and you hear by the evening that their new riches were moved to their caravan, guarded by red-eyed axedwarves, while their smiths and magicians moved some alchemical and metalworking equipment to one of unused prison cells, where only darkness and fungus reign.

809 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings his strange scrolls for your perusal.

"As projected, sire, the taxes brought some extra revenue, but there have been reports of some incidents involving unruly peasants."

Happiness: 4
Population: 5
Economy: 1
Army: 5

"Also, the investigation into the assassination attempt has been concluded. The cipher is common for the spymasters of the western nations. It was broken and therefore the message, a cryptic one, has been deciphered: 'Go forth and punish the meddling Pig of East who dares to conspire with traitors and enemies of my rule'. It wasn't signed, though."

"However, due to the expenses involving the Necklace, I can't help but ask if there's anything you wish to do about it. I've preemptively asked the Marshal and he is adamant about keeping the Army numbers intact."

A) Keep the taxes raised  for another year.
B) -
C) Reduce to taxes to previous amount.

12035
There's no option E on previous option list.

12036
You say that you would be willing to pay up front, but then the advisor takes you to the side for a moment.

"Most blessed King, I can't help but deduce that our Treasury will be so empty that there will be more cobwebs in it than coins if you agree to pay the dwarves now - and that's considering both the revenue from Augas and the projected extra coinage from raised taxes." You think about this for a moment, and then decide to:

A) Go on with it anyways. Fancy magical amulet, ho!!
B) Quickly tell the dwarves that you have changed your mind... (if you pick this option, please scroll to previous option list and pick something else).

//Dynasty status added to first post of the topic with little list of achievements and such v:

You tell them that you know a bit of their laws, and therefore wish to know if there's another way you can pay for this piece of enchanted jewellery. They discuss it amongst themselves.

"We are long-living, born during one human's greatgrandfathers, and dying during one's greatgrandchildren, so we can come in sixty years time to collect our payment, but if you or those who come after you refuse to pay, there will be lethal consequences to your people and your land." Says the one with blue beard reaching down to his knees. This could be potentially dangerous, as it is known that Elfs rarely interact with 'inferior races' like Humans - unless pissed off by such.

"And we believe in our debts and honors, and therefore, you can go forth northwest and strike the fair folk of Caeltic Forests, and capture their Princess Eolwellewynn, so she shall become our prized slave." Explains another with red-golden forked beard.

A) After some consideration lets just stick to paying here and now!
B) Let's agree to postponement of the payment for 60 years!
C) An elven captive for a magical necklace? That's a bargain, right?
D) Sorry, but we won't be buying your services.

You order the mighty Army of Luathbas to confront the filthy orc slavers.

Quote

The Army does meet with the orcs near the village of Tadwannraedh. You receive report of fierce fighting in which there are heavy Army casaulties, but the orcs' warband is destroyed and the few survivors flee back to their homeland!

809 AD, Autumn

Yearly convoy of money from Augas have arrived at your court!

809 AD, Winter

Your beloved wife, after such long time, finally gives birth to another child! It's a boy, and she names him 'Lech'.

809 AD, Midwinter

A group of dwarves arrives at the court! They smell of earth and death, but this time its a different group of smiths and magicians - they heard of both your military exploits and your usually disasterous diplomatic shenanigans, therefore they offer to craft you an enchanted necklace of gold and gemstones that will 'persuade' those you deal with at the negotiations' table to be more open to your suggestions.

They request a huge amount of money for their services, however.

A) Splendid! Not many a monarch can boast having magical artifacts on their personages. Let's pay the dwarves for this enchanted necklace!
B) Naw, we don't need no magic to run our kingdom.
C) Considering the last time you met with dwarves, and knowing a little about their laws and contracts, ask them if there is another way you can pay for this necklace.

The advisor leaves to inform the treasurer of the decision.

809 AD, Spring

You prepare to fall asleep besides your beloved wife. Just as you close your eyes, you suddenly feel a breeze from the window and someone's eyes at your back. You turn around just in time to see a silhouette of a man with a dagger!

Assassin!

Quote
6 noooooo

You swiftly grab your sword and raise it so it meets the blade of the assassin with a loud 'clink!'. Your wife wakes up and screams in terror, while you, in your pajamas, jump off the bed and slash at the attacker, who parries the blow - nonetheless, his attempt has been compromised, and he flees towards the window!

Quote
6 THIS IS FUCKIN WIZARDRY

You grab a candlestick from the night table and toss it at the assassin, clonking him right on his head. He tumbles down and kisses the cold stone floor of your bedchamber, just as the Royal Guard bursts through the door. They quickly apprehend the assassin.

The next morning, the assassin has been interrogated ("He spilled no beans, sire"), and a coded letter was found on his person.

The advisor and Captain of the Guard promise to put all effort in finding who have sent the assassin.

809 AD, Mid-Spring

Urgent report from Augas province!

Quote
6 why it keeps rolling 6's!? ;~;

Several organized attempts by the Parsians to retake Augas were swiftly and brilliantly defeated by your Army, and they even made some counter-raids past Augas' borders and into Parsian mainland. This should surely make Parsians think twice before they dare to attack Augas again!

809 AD, Late Spring

Orcish warband is raiding the south-western villages! A terrified messenger says that they're 'hiring' new 'workers' for their 'enterprises'.

Something should be done about it; slavery is a disgusting thing in the minds of Luathbas people, and therefore letting a part of population be snatched will only infuriate both the peasantry and the nobility.

The advisor tells you the possible options, and in the end, you decide to:

A) Send tributes to the orcish warchief, basically buying your people's safety with the Treasury's coffers.
B) Order your mighty Army to meet the orcs in the field and attempt to rout them.
C) Prepare a tearful speech in which you lament the fact that the Crown can do naught about this.

12042
You decide to spend more of Treasury's money on procuring mercenaries for the eastern front.

808 AD, End of the Year

The advisor brings his enigmatic scrolls to your bedroom.

Happiness: 5
Population: 5
Economy: 2
Army: 6

The advisor sighs.

"My liege, I can't help but notice the sorry state of our Treasury. Therefore, I recommend that we raise the taxes for year, which of course will anger the populace a bit, or we can cut the Army wages and disband some of-"

Suddenly it gets dark in the room as a large figure, swinging down a rope, jumps through the window blocking the sunlight! The man in armor stands proudly as his cape flutters behind him.

It's the Marshal!

"NAY, SIRE!!" He booms. "I shall NOT allow the Army's strength to be reduced in any way when we're at WAR!" Flashy entrance or not, he has a point. The advisor rolls his eyes.

A) Raise the taxes for a year
B) -
C) Do nothing, the Treasury can survive a deficit or two.

12043
The trade advisor sighs as the old engineer, his apprentices, and large amount of materiel is convoyed eastwards to Augas.

808 AD, Autumn

The yearly revenues from Augas safely arrive at the capital!

808 AD, Winter

The censuses are completed; the population of Luathbas did increase, as predicted.

808 AD, Mid-Winter

An exhausted messenger brings news from Augas!

Quote
2

Luathbas forces suffered numerous defeats in the open field and lost two minor fortresses close to Parsian mainlands! The Army commanders stationed there request new recruits to be sent immediatelly!

A) Draft some peasants and have them sent eastwards!
B) Hire more mercenaries and adventurers to bolster Army ranks in Augas!
C) Oh, they will be just fine, we're sure of that!

12044
You decline to send more men as mercenaries, and the dignitary leaves.

807 AD, End of the Year

The advisor, like every other year, brings the Scrolls of Kingdom Status for your perusal.

Happiness: 5
Population: 4
Economy: 3
Army: 6

Nothing really changed this year, thanks to skillful administration (and a bit of luck).

808 AD, Spring

An elderly engineer and his apprentices, fearing persecution from 'the paranoid, mad and bloodthirsty Kiwi King', arrive at the court, asking for sanctuary. He is willing to repay for your kindness with his skills, boosting the defense of Capital with his devices and inventions. If he would to receive enough money and supplies, however, he could spend next five years upgrading the fortifications somewhere else in Luathbas.

A) Accept him and let him boost the capital's defense.
B) Accept him, and then send him along with supplies and money to improve the defenses at the border with Lametania in the south.
C) Accept him, and then send him along with supplies and money to improve the defenses in the volatile Augas Province in the east.
D) Tell him to seek shelter somewhere else.
