Update 8: Nuclear Holocaust is Not Yet Here?

Our cruise missile lands in Shangtu, just as Zulus threaten us with Nuclear Weapons and then declare war on us.

I also discover that I actually cannot make nukes; I forgot about the hidden requirement of Nuclear Fission, the basis for Manhattan Project. Crap.

Next turn there is no nukes raining on us but Zulus capture 3 Mongol cities at once.

Now at 1955AD: Zulus capture another Mongol city. Still no nuclear rain upon us. Mongols and Zulus also get Laser by this year. RIP our nuking plans.

Next year Mongols formalize the war against us; Ormuz garrison had to repel 3 Tanks and a Mechanized Infatry unit, while our Jet Fighter almost died intercepting 2 sorties of Bombers.

...

. . .

1958AD: Continuous conventional land-based attacks from Mongols against Ormuz are all repelled. No nukes, albeit many border cities change hands between Zulus and Mongols, as our embassy reports.

Oh god. ICBMs. Nukes with 26 range. God help us all.

Also Konigsberg's adjacent fort gets hit by wave of 4 Bombers, wow.

This brave Jet Fighter spent all its fuel destroying those 4 Bombers, then a stack of Tanks, and 2 pieces of Artillery before it crashed in the plains outside Kazan.

Unfortunately next turn there's another set of Bombers (three) attacking Konigsberg directly and we barely hold the city.

By 1963AD, we still hold pretty well, repelling AEGIS Cruisers, Tanks and Bombers, and not a single Nuke was detonated.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One of our tanks, using a gap in Mongol defences and the exploit of infinite movement via railroads scouted the interior of Mongol empire. You can see its rather vast. Karakorum is its capital, and its kinda small, all things considered.

Such pop-ups occur every turn.

Our diplomat enters Kabul and steals this tech. Meanwhile, Zulus captured 3 Mongol cities in span of 5 years, getting as close as 5 tiles away from Mongol capital of Karakorum.

Next year Aztecs pop up to say 'hi' and trade a tech. I gladly agreed.

A bit of lul in aggression and we manage to steal Espionage.

And Nuclear Power!

It seems that our intelligence services are doing quite well :3

So I decided that it's time to try something drastic.

Aw I hoped it would be slightly less risky.

So we went to Nishapur and...

It is now 1980AD.

13142
Wait what the fuck I mean I have Rocketry already.

So I can make nukes too.

Everyone can make nukes if they have Rocketry and someone finishes Manhattan Project. I'm so blind sometimes.

...but, can I outnuke GENGHIS KHAN???

13143
Nukes are never awesome if you're on the receiving end D;

13144
Update 7: Disturbingly Disasterous Developments

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As our scientists develop Machine Tools and then set out for Miniaturization, our fighterplane deals with a small stack of Artillery and then is sent further into Mongolian territory; discovering that the forts outside Pompeii are unmanned!

Unfortunately as our border fortresses and also Ormuz are at minimal staffing we cannot take over these this year.

Curses, they were first again.

Zulus aren't as far with techs as I thought.

This is midway of a Mongol offensive; 6 Tanks, 2 Artillery and a bomber. Fortunately we halved the tank horde and shot down the Bomber moments after this photo was taken.

Next turn a Bomber struck against Heidelburg.

But I have more bad news:

China lost its capital.

Zulus are making nukes.

Fortunately I managed to exchange some techs with Aztecs! We got Refrigeration and Advanced Flight in exchange for Theory of Gravity and Machine Tools.

Luftwaffe has only 1 Airship left, and we gonna make Bombers anyways, but that one remaining zeppelin is still proving its worth.

Craaaaaaap. Mongols gonna V2 us ;n;
PS: Next turn they captured a Zulu city and took Nuclear Fission. Mongols with nukes incoming.

Up to 1949 the War was happening mostly in the skies; our Fighters shot down or intercepted at least 6 Mongol bombers.

Year later we develop Rocketry.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We also make some impressive inroads into Mongolian territory. Suprising lack of counter-offensive worries me a bit.
PS: They Bomber'd half of our Tanks next turn.

Zulus drop Manhattan Project in favor of SETI... but Mongols are still developing nukes.

Aww yiss, we gunna have Jet Fighter force soon!

1952: Mongols almost got Nukes.
PS: And Zulus just got SETI.

1953: Mongols develop Nuclear Weapons.

Let's pause here. I need few deep breaths, a drink, some pizza and maybe a funny cartoon or two before I click 'end turn' and we move onto 1954AD.

If there's a 1954AD scheduled on the calendar ;n;

13145
Not sure what is happening on that gif but the pixely fireworks are simply glorious.

13146
Update 6: The REICHHUNDE Bites Back!

Next two turns are full of fighting the Mongols. Our Alpine troops and Riflemen effectively block every Cavalry and Cannon that the Mongols toss at us.

Unfortunately our Airships had only moderate success; one Battleship sunk but it costed our Veteran Airship lots of health, and the other barely survived a bombing of fortified Rifleman unit. They're now docked at Heidelburg for repairs.

We now have Flight! I've ordered some cities to create buncha Fighters in case Mongols decide to bomb us with Airships they have.

However!

Soon we will have something even better than Fighterplanes!

By 1918, our Airships sunk two Destroyers and severely bombed Ormuz but its garrison, despite losing 3 Riflemen and an Artillery piece, is still strong. I also had to switch production in some cities to Police Stations to curb the unhappiness we have from those Airships and other units being outside cities/forts.

The war turns a bit unfunny in 1920. They also get Guerilla Warfare from Romans next turn which will make grabbing of Ormuz a bit harder.

Our first Fighter scored major strafing victories against garrison of Ormuz, killing 2 Riflemen units before I had him return to Heidelberg; still no Tanks nor Airships spotted on Mongol side.

Our Airship force is now 4 vessels strong, all Veterans of bombings of Ormuz. All the vessels are heavily damaged though; I wish Radio popped up on Research table soon so I can build Airports for faster repairs.

Unfortunately, our navy (what navy?) had terrible performance so far. We lost 3 subs and a Destroyer and sunk only a single empty Transport and a Destroyer ourselves. Therefore I decided to stop funding the Navy and concentrate our funds and resources on the Luftwaffe and land forces only.

Also remember that hill Fortress at edge of Ormuz that kept triggering Romans and later on Mongols? We recaptured and restaffed it.

First pair of Mongol tanks attacked it next year, but our brave Alpine Troopers tanked (ha!) them.

Haha! Now to rebuild Barracks and then we can start creating Tanks ourselves!

YES! We captured Ormuz! The list of plunder-able techs was vast but I picked Steel.

This is truly a historic moment. It took us many centuries, but not only we caught up with the Mongols, we also captured the city that launched sea-and-land raids against our borders for last several centuries.

I should be more careful with our Airships from now on.

Also, Mongols flooded the plains in front of Ormuz with about 10 Tanks. Our reply?

A charge with our Cavalry and shiny Tank. I also sacrificed one of the Airship so it could bomb a stack of 4 Tanks with the last of its fuel. RIP Airship.
As you can see I managed to further reduce the Tank hordes.

Another stack of Tanks destroyed! But the Mongols keep coming!! I had to pull some Alpine garrisons from as far as Berlin and Leipzig to reinforce Ormuz in preparation for unavoidable Tank rush.

Hot damn, Chinese lost a city?? They're like the most advanced peoples, I thought they also had adequate army to repel Mongols.

The rush of 6 or 7 Mongol Tanks against Ormuz was repelled; out of all defenders we lost only 1 Alpine unit.

Radio has been developed by the Reich scientists. Unfortunately in the same time Mongol Fighter planes shot down 3 out of 6 currently operating Airships.

Zulus continue fighting against Mongols, as we do. Another stack of (3) Tanks was destroyed by a bombing run, while our Alpine troops repel an Airship raid against Ormuz!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also opened another front with an Airship and 3 Alpine troops operating from Konigsberg. They primarily harass Mongol footsoldiers and Engineers.

Between 1930 and 1931 we lose another Airship to the Mongol Fighterplanes. Several Tank columns however are repelled by both Ormuz defenders and the Fortress crew as the Mongols seemingly decided to sneak some tanks through the mountains.

In 1932, Chinese lose three cities to the Mongols, while Aztecs lose a city they have taken from Mongols earlier.

I'm going to talk with the Chinese about these developments.

Finally after centuries of being ignored, they sign a peace treaty with us!

I gave them Mobile Warfare in exchange for Atomic Theory.

Further proof that Caesar is an incredible asshole.

It's 1934; I decided to close the Konigsberg front and fly its Airship to Ormuz via Leipzig and Nuremberg. The 'deluge' of Mongol tanks have turned into a slim stream, but their Artillery continues to harass us every year.

I just checked their casualty list (we still have embassy with them!); they lost over 45 tanks, 15 Airships, 12 Fighters, 20 pieces of Artillery, 20-something Fanatics and almost 30 Riflemen, plus 18 Submarines, 14 Destroyers and 15 Cavalry so far in this 'World War', holy shit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Status of the frontlines & our army listing at the end of 1935.

For the interested: I'm building that one Transport to ferry units from Konigsberg&Cologne to the mainland; surprisingly those two cities have very nice Shield output, would be a waste to not put it to good use. With Leipzig and Cologne being only 4 tiles apart, our transport can get from city-to-city in 1 turn without getting sunk by Mongol submarines (that are still aplenty).

The war continues, but this update ends here!

13147
So, what's the plan? Sink the mongol navy? Take Ormuz before the mongols finish the railroad?

I haven't been able to send a scout past Ormuz lately so that railroad is probably finished ;v Ormuz is the home of their navy that is harassing our coast, so I will direct our glorious airships to bomb it. As the Mongols are preoccupied on Zulu-Aztec front, we might be able to actually capture the city without a flood of Mongol reinforcements stomping us. I will use Alpine Troops and Cavalry to grab it.

13148
Make Paris the City of Light it should be, and try to get Cultural victory? ;v

13149
Oh, hmm. Well let's aim for being the best civ? ;v

Actually what are possible victory goals in Civ3?

13150
Let's be France? And aim for Cultural/Religious victory.

13151
Yeah, just checked, it's 1886AD.

Update 5: ZE REBIRTH OF ZE GLORIOUS REICH

We begin with a terrible news:

Greeks are still around though, but unfortunately I think Alexander's days are over.

In the same turn we develop Theory of Gravity and then go on to get Refining. Then Combustion, Aeronautics (research table's RNG willing of course), and we will have Fighters.

Bye Alexander you were best buddy ;n;

1893AD, we get Refining. Also I can't catch it on a screenshot but our coasts are patrolled by at least eight Mongol submarines. It's scary to go out into the sea.

No Airships en route to our cities yet, which is a surprise but welcome relief.

Just after our cease-fire with Mongols expires, Zulus propose a non-agression pact. We also learn Aeronautics... I've scheduled a pair of Airships to be built, one in Berlin and one in Heidelburg.

I was so, so tempted, but decided against it.

Aw shite. It seems we don't have a choice!

We develop Combustion, Mongols develop Automobile, and Berlin starts polluting the environment.

I dunno what Mongols did but Aztecs and Romans also jumped on the war against them. Which is good because I saw a pair of Mongol Airships fly to Ormuz one turn earlier and honestly I had little panic moment.

O:!
First time ever in this playthrough Mongols lose a city!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

WE DID! WE HAVE AN AIRSHIP!! And we got 2nd in Heidelburg next turn! It's the birth of Luftwaffe, guys!
PS: Dear god but they do cause a lot of unhappiness!

AHAHA! A pair of Mongol Destroyers was the prize of this glorious Airship.

Still we lack in power somewhat. I'm gonna ask Chinese for techs... They refused :c

Romans did too, and Zulus gloated about us being too primitive to comprehend. That leaves Aztecs.

Aztecs did gloat last time too but eh, it won't hurt to ask and hope for-

AZTECS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! Yes I will take it!

PS: OH MY FAWKING GAWD

THEY TRADED US ELECTRONICS, ELECTRICITY, MAGNETISM, COMMUNISM AND AUTOMOBILE FOR A BUNCH OF EARLIER WARFARE TECHS.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Mongols have thought that they have scared us into primitive lifestyle and constant fear for our lives!

But ze Reich IS BACK!!

13152
Somewhere between 188x and 189x, I don't remember the exact figure.

13153
Play With Your Buddies / Re: Civ IV - Let's Try England Again
« on: March 31, 2016, 01:34:11 pm »
Just want to say that I find this style for the updates highly engaging.

Yeah, it's very good. PTW!

13154
But it is a learning experience, I'm sure. And it does make for a fun LP.

I have to admit, trying to survive while almost making some gains and doing backstabbings and stealings to catch up and basically going fast&furious does make a nice change compared to previous 'out-build and out-tech' playthrough :D

Update 4: Industrial Reich!

Diplomacy with ze Romans at its finest, kekeke.

We switch to it immediatelly.

Our diplomats continue their (dirty) work. Turns out that Mongols have about 5 or 6 techs that we don't have. Then again they did slow expanding and I hear more quips about Zulus than Mongols lately.

A-ha! The glorious EISENKLADEN OF ZE REICH is gonna sink the puny Mongolian frigates!
...It sunk 2 out of 4 and damaged the third before getting sunk itself. Pretty good job. Conclusion: MORE EISENKLADEN!!

Or not.

Next turn Heidelburg goes into discontent and then refuses to get happy next turn despite my efforts and my entire government collapses so I gotta run damage control for a moment.

It's the worst of Civ2. You have 5 cities, 10 cities, 50 cities - one goes into Disorder for 2 turns and your Democracy falls. No save from it.

Took me 8 turns to get back on our feet.

Also Mongols just switched to Fundamentalism.

And Chinese followed suit, breaking the peace with Mongols. Everyone is at war with Mongols.

Our 2nd EISENKLADE survives a battle and becomes a veteran unit, woo!

Next turn 4 Mongol Destroyers bombard Munich and Leipzig. Fortunately our Musketeers were up to the task. But I think that building Coastal Fortresses in those cities won't hurt.

Aw ye! We actually took over Mongols for 5 turns before they developed Leadership as well. I also managed to switch about half of our Musketeers for Riflemen already.

I think Alexander won't make it. Besides Argos, he also lost Sparta few turns earlier.

Even Mongols don't have this. yet!

Unfortunately our arch-nemesis captured a Chinese city of Macao and plundered this tech.

I decided to go against my own judgement and traded Tactics and Explosives for Railroad and Industrialization. This means factories (every city was ordered to drop what it's doing and build one) and railroads will soon appear in our little Reich.
We also quickly developed The Corporation; Mongols don't have that one either!

Genghis, asking for cease-fire? On his own?
o:
I guess the Zulu-Mongols war (that continues for about half a century now) isn't going that well to our nemesis. I accepted the cease-fire.

Uhhhh, fine, Senate, have it your way with the Romans too.

And from domestic news:

First railroad link opens between Leipzig and Munich! Soon the railroad network will span our entire peninsula.

Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig got their Factories finished too, so we will have ample amount of production. Mayhaps we can even begin producing military units to-

* Haspen cranks warning sirens, orders population to shelters.

Well this playthrough is sure gonna turn rough in a moment. Will we be the first victim of Mongolian aerial bombardments, or are they gonna (hopefully) keep the Death From Above away from us for a while?

We will see in the next update!

13155
Got SPD, can't complain :v
