You learn through official channels that UEG has authorized the creation of two first extrasolar colonies - at Mu Arae IIc and Rho Cancri. Two convoys of Everspamens filled with supplies, colonists and pre-fab infrastructure will be sent out there.

The first convoy is due to leave Solar System in December this year.

September 2220

Your secretary notifies you that the SFHQ has sent you new design specifications.

You download the data to your pad, and blink at the specs in disbelief.

You remind yourself how Average Design Rating works: it takes ratings of all 6 Categories (Warp, Impulse, Weaponry, Point Defense, Cargo, Science), then divides them by 6.

You quickly calculate the ADR for Spammibal, Everspamen and Spamterprise: 1.08 for the escort, 0.66 for the scienceship, and 0.83 for the armored cargoship, while pulling up the current list of Components available for your Bureau.


You also remember that multiples of each component will drive their costs up very, very quickly - just two Red Laser Arrays will require 10 MegaCredits to sink into the design.

You do some sloppy, quick math in your head and instantly come to a conclusion that the SFHQ is asking for something almost impossible to build with current technology.

B) "I can't possibly meet these specifications with such a tight budget! I need more MC's for this!"

You grumble, reading the newest report from Europa Megalab. The final test of the red laser array caused a massive power spike across the lab's network, frying several data centers and causing irreversible loss of petaquads of data along with their backups.

This basically sets the laser weaponry project back to starting point.

At least the news from Utopia Spamitia Yards are more optimistic - the yard has resumed functioning and the dockworkers are begining to assemble the internal structure of Everspamen-002.

June 2200

The mass-decommissioning of the Spamtacuses have given the Utopia Spamitia Yards plenty of components to re-use. The Yardmaster reports that this should help speed completion of Everspamen-002 by a week or two.

You receive information from SFHQ that the Spamfleet Council managed to convince the United Earth Government to shelf the idea of civilian inspections for the time being.

Mid-July 2200

You watch the inaugural launch of Everspamen-002 with clenched teeth.

Everything goes splendidly, from undocking to the cruise, to the asteroid operations and in-transit cargo exchange. Everspamen design is then moved to the military databases across the Solar System so that the Spamfleet's docks can begin its construction.

Meanwhile, Utopia Spamitia has begun work on the prototype Spamterprise vessel. It should be out for a test cruise in six weeks.

Europa Megalab sends its report - the research on Red Laser Array has been finished without further incidents.

Within a day's time, the yardmaster sends his estimates that the Everspamen-001 should be out of the dock for its first cruise within 6 weeks.

Report comes from Europa Megalab. The Fusion Pulse Thrusters have been developed, tested, and ready to enter production!

You're glad you're not the Yardmaster.

Few days later, you receive the report that Utopia Spamitia will be operational within a month, and that's when the construction of Everspamen-002 can begin at the earliest.

You attend the holo-conference with the Europa Megalab Chief Science Officer and others, which includes the presentation of the fusion-powered laser beam.

It is menacingly red and its beam cuts through Spamtacus-126, a recently decomissioned ship, with relative ease. Soon the old ship is in four pieces, the edges bright-orange from the laser's heat.

"We thought we would have a working prototype faster but there's still many kinks to work out, including the drain on the power network and potential damage to the focusing lenses. But here at Europa Megalab we're convinced that we need just few weeks more."

Mid-May 2200

SFHQ officials host a holo-conference with you.

"The recent Utopia Spamitia disaster has caused the government to start clamoring for more safeguards and civilian inspectoral body to be commissioned within Spamfleet." One of them says.

"This will cause delays for pushing out your prototypes if the Government will have to approve the launches and test cruises and every damn door hinge on the ships." Another complains.

"The question is, Chief Designer, is whether we should convince the Government against it, or not." Says the Councillor.

A) "New designs and ships being ready to defend the Earth are a matter of our security and we can't let the civilians delay them!"
B) "If we don't agree to civilian inspections, another Everspamen disaster will happen sooner or later."

You're a merchant, with knowledge of items procured, traded and available in the Desert, as well as the groups of people that might wander and dwell within its barely hospitable areas.

You pack up your pitiful belongings into the big bag and look around.

To the north, you see tall dunes and occassional stone surface.

To the east, you see cracked soil, surely a basin of a long-evaporated lake.

To the west and south, you see more sand. You remember coming from the south, that's the general direction of Oasis Seven - but why would you return there, with no loot to brag about and no stories to share?
