You walk to the command center and check the sensors.

Sensors Station Alert! IFF beacon translation in progress...

Done!

"Vanessa", Melchior-class Armed Merchantship, approaching from direction of Poseidonis Jump Gate.

Standard docking and refueling request received.

Fuel Pump assigned: #1 (authority: Automated Refueling AI)

Estimated arrival time: 16 minutes.

Your first patron!

Or maybe patrons? Melchiors usually have a crew of eight, if you recall correctly.

A) Send them an offer to have a drink or three!
B) I am too unprepared to serve them; let them just refuel.

Bar goes first!

It takes a little over five minutes for you to clean the dust, clear up the junk and stash it in the recycler, and then wipe the counter and the shelves.

Suddenly, from the control room, you hear the loud, warning pings of the sensor system!

A) I gotta fix the lights first!
B) I gotta fix the disco first!
C) Let's see what's the pinging about.

1594
You cleanup the station - and most importantly, the bar - a little bit.

1236USY.1d/1m.0949h

You manage to run diagnostics on the Fuel Pumps; #10 is offline for almost six years now, while #9 has been struck my a micrometeorite two days ago and its docking mechanism is damaged. You take that one offline as well.

The bar, on other hand, has its furniture toppled or missing, theres dust and junk everywhere, and the bright neon lights above the bar and elsewhere are nonfunctional. The disco area is offline, too!

A) Time to send a maintenance request for the fuel pumps!
B) Lets clean up the bar first!
C) Lets try fixing the lightning first!
D) Lets try fixing the disco area first!

That was quite a lecture. Fortunately, no sensor pings meant that you could concentrate on the text.

The more important bits to remember:

Code: [Select]
1. Refueling stations are automated and controlled by SRC Refueling AI. Transfers and purchases are automated and therefore do not count into your earnings.
2. You can earn Credits by selling synthols and mixing drinks.
3. As per NGF Synthol Taxation Reform, there's no credit quota per month; instead the SRC Management is privy to bi-monthly 'performance review'. It will impact your assignment and potential removal from the station, if your earnings are not satisfactory.
4. Your earnings will still be tallied per-month (0.1 of a space year) basis.
5. Anything that breaks down must be tended to you or forwarded to the SRC listening posts so that they send a repair crew.
6. On-board torpedo launchers and photon cannons can be put on auto or manually crewed by you.
7. As implied by the above, you're responsible for defense of the station and its valuable fuel storages.

A) Explore your mind and body.
B) Do a cleanup of station sections and the bar.

1596
You do some maintenance on the file database of the station.

1236USY.1d/1m.0315h

You do file integrity diagnostics, some much-required updates for sensor and communications software, as well as remove obsolete and junk files, left no doubt by previous bartenders or SRC maintenance crew-

Huh.

There's a folder called 'The Space Adventures of Captain Zirconius and the Ragtag Crew of the Galactic Corvette Hyperion-3!'. It has several hundreds of files, neatly numbered in over a dozen subfolders.

You don't remember ever reading or even hearing about this series during entirety of your Drone childhood and beyond. Could it be vintage series from the old Galactic Federation years?

A) Let's junk it, the database might need the extra space.
B) It might be worth reading a chapter or two, right?
C) Drink and synthol education is more important.
D) Gotta read on my work contract and the economics of synthol sales first.

1597
You decide to download the entire database onto station computer.

Code: [Select]
Establishing transfer...

Processing...

Database transfer failed. Reason for failure: Not enough space.

Space available: 153 TQs
Space needed: 9349 TQs

Retry\Abort?

You see no other way than to abort.

What now?

A) Enough terminal tinkering for now.
B) Time for more drink and synthol education.
C) Do some file management on the local database.
D) Read about your work contract and the economics of synthol sales.

1598
You read the entries on bartending, synthols, drinks mixed, and try to find some bartender jargon dictionaries while you're at it.

Outpost 254831...

Your new workplace! Your new home! An island in the ocean of space! A fortified castle in the middle of the lawless wilderness!

The emergency travel pod (SRC couldn't afford you a liner ticket) docks within the station's cargo bay and you disembark.

The station is in the state of slight disrepair. You quickly connect your fingers to the computer interface and it gives you summary of the status... and everything's seems in order? Then again, it is corporate software we're talking about.

You log into the sensor software and there's not a single ping of impulse drive within range. No wonder; the system at which edge's you're located, Beta Carotenii, while a main sequence orange star with Sol-like parameters, has only a singular, hot gas giant orbiting it.

Besides a science satellite in high orbit of said giant and sending out periodic survey data, there's no signs of civilization - except your outpost, of course. A quartet of Jump Gates, relatively close to each other, is present in the system, but the traffic is low.

It might be hours, days, or even weeks (hopefully not) until you get your first customer - if they're interested in drinking and not just automated refuelling, that's it.

What do you do?

A) Do maintenance on the station software.
B) Do a cleanup of station sections and the bar.
C) Explore your mind and body.
D) Read the database entries on synthols and bartending topics.
E) Read about your work contract and the economics of synthol sales.

I will count that as 2 for Nechtan and 1 for Arnold, unless Maxi says otherwise ;v

1601
Good entries but that also means votes are split ;v

What's the difference between Chatty and Amenable anyway?

Chatty is conversational and prone to discussions.
Amenable is submissive and prone to apologies.

1602
Once upon a time, you were a Drone.

Specifically bred and modified since conception until birth, then carefully brought up to serve a singular purpose. Well...

...that's until the Great Galactic War. EXO-LUMINA Corp's rule ended, the democracy returned (except in places where brutal military dictatorships took over), and the New Galactic Federation is trying stardate-by-stardate to restore human civilization from its knees.

But the instability and brutality of the past 27 years is gone. With the New Galactic Federation's Basic Rights Charter, you're no longer a Drone - you're now legally free person, and an adult, at that.

Homeless, without family, you were doing oddjobs and drifting about the galaxy without much purpose. Finally, at brink of starvation and despair, you've applied for the first job you could find on the constantly shifting Job Network.

Bartending for Synthol Refueling Conglomerate, at the Galactic Refueling Outpost 254831, Zanzibar Sector.

And then, there was silence.

"Finally, good work, Lolbert."

"..."

"Lolbert?"

"Ah, sorry, sir. Feeling a bit weird."

"I see... well, the fighting's winding down, so take it easy for a moment."

"Of course, sir." Prince Aland turned to Orf.

"Alright, Orf, check that chest for its contents, then open that reinforced door you spoke of. Casslan and Alixia will back you up in case its trapped or something's hiding behind it."

"Reassuring..." The thief moved inside, wary of the chest, while Prince Aland moved a bit closer to the door.
