You continue climbing still!

Quote

Not only you climb swiftly, but you also find a partial path leading upwards. Not having to climb all the time does wonders to how your hands feel - plus of course you save quite a lot of energy and time.

You reach a ledge with a shallow cave for you to camp at. You can see the peak of the mountain above you from here.

(Supplies: 7)

In the morning, you pass the final climb - it is a very short one - and arrive at the flattened peak.

Small sunflowers, argent in petals and black in stalks, grow amongst pebble-ridden black dirt. Each and every sunflower is ripe, as far as you can tell, with hundred of silver seeds.

Is it time to harvest and go home, at last?

A) Take just one seed.
B) Grab a handful of seeds.
C) Look around for some special-looking seed.
D) These argent sunflower seeds could be useful back down! How about we fill up our sack and clothes' pockets with them??

You drool as you start helping yourself to the food. The old hag smiles with her crooked teeth at the sight.

The veggies are crunchy and fresh, and so are the fruits, tasting like multiple varieties of honey encapsuled in mushy cream. The meat stew is superbly prepared and you salivate as you take bites of the firm, yet juicy beef into your mouth. The broth is thick with vegetables, all cooked into perfection.

Such joy is multitude of foods! The hag laughs jovially as you fill yourself with the delicious foods, lost in the taste and senses. More, more! You need to have more - now and forever!

Congratulations! Velarien gained a new negative trait: glutton!

Suddenly you shake from cold as you realize you're sitting outside, stuffing wilted grasses and small worms into your mouth. The house, the pot, the table and the foods are all gone, but the wind carries an old woman's cackle through the air.

You spit the remnants of your 'feast', feeling hunger in your stomach.

Miserable, you continue your climb.

Perhaps driven by anger and shame, you nimbly ascend for another ledge. Here, you see a splitting path.

One is leading downwards, towards something of a valley, nested between mountain walls.

The other is climbing steepily upwards, until it terminates in another cliff-face to scale.

Where to?

A) Up and up we go!
B) Valleys have coves, right? Right??

You tell the guards it is time to welcome Lord Nekogawa into your humble castle.

You walk to the gates and the servants open it for you - and your honored guest. The carriage containing Lord Nekogawa stops in front of the gate and he walks out. He is a bearded, rotund man with height surpassing yours. His soldiers and retainers are all tough-and-scary looking, but Lord Nekogawa himself is all smiles and makes impression of a jovial man.

"My esteemed peer and neighbour, Lord Midoriyama." He says, bowing his head slightly.

"My esteemed peer and neighbour, Lord Nekogawa." You mirror his words, and welcome him in.

There's few moments before the servants prepare the tea chamber for you two to sit and enjoy the meeting in security and peace of the domed room.

A) Ask him if the journey through fief of Midoriyama was a pleasant one.
B) Compliment his bearing and choice of clothes and armor.
C) Ask about the health and prosperity of his family and fief.
D) Remain silent - there will be time for smalltalk later as well.

1821
"I wish to know who Lord Nekogawa is." Minister of Ceremonies contemplates your question for a moment.

"He is a local Lord, can't say I heard him having family ties to other Lords. He is of Fourth Rank, as I said. He is an honorable adherent of Bushi-do, and last time I heard he owns three villages and has six unmarried daughters."

"Ah." You nod. "I think I understand now."

Another guard quickly walks into your study and bows beside the other.

"My Lord Midoriyama, the entourage of Lord Nekogawa is approaching the gates. What are your orders?"

A) "I shall welcome him to my castle!"
B) "Turn him away! I want no guests today."

1822
"How can I greet such a noble guest properly?" The Master of Ceremonies strokes his beard.

"He is of Fourth Rank as well. As an equal, you should be present when the gates are opened by your servants and then greet him as he greets you."

A) Ask the Minister of Ceremonies about Clan Nekogawa and its Lord more thoroughly.
B) Ask the guard to send the footpad away - you wish to see no guests today.
C) Ask the Minister of Ceremonies how to show your Clan's hospitality in the best way.

1823
As an adherent of the Old Master, it is only natural that learned men and wordly sages dwell in your fort.

You send your servants with the news that Midoriyama Clan seeks intellectuals for employ.

25th Year of Emperor Yama, Mid-Earth Season

One of the guards enters your study and kneels, bowing his head till it touches the bamboo mat.

"Lord Midoriyama, a footpad has arrived at the gates. Your neighbour, Lord Nekogawa, with an entourage of retainers, will soon be visiting your castle. The footpad said that Lord Nekogawa wishes to meet his newest neighbour." You call in the Minister of Ceremonies to ask about all this.

"It is customary for Lords to visit their close friends, long-time rivals, and newest neighbours. He might be willing to strike a business with you, though, given you're freshly ennobled and without a wife."

"Should I refuse him?" You ask, and Minister of Ceremonies grimaces.

"You could, of course, as your are Lord of this castle. Of course, this will endear you to no one within Clan Nekogawa." You wager that you have few minutes before you should prepare to greet Lord Nekogawa - as the Old Master teaches, one should not pose a challenge without learning about those they challenge first.

A) Ask the Minister of Ceremonies how to greet your honored guest properly.
B) Ask the Minister of Ceremonies about Clan Nekogawa and its Lord more thoroughly.
C) Ask the Minister of Ceremonies how to show your Clan's hospitality in the best way.
D) Ask the guard to send the footpad away - you wish to see no guests today.

25th Year of Emperor Yama

You are Goku Midoriyama, the Lord of Clan Midoriyama.

Thanks to your illustrious father's deeds, the fief of Midoriyama was bestowed upon you on your 15th birthday.

You have always been known as a healthy man who knows no fever and no waste of spirit - some say it is blessings of the divine spirits, some it is the will of the God itself.

The day your fief was bestowed upon you, you also decreed your Adherence - to the illustrious teachings of the Old Master. It puts you in graces of sages and common folk alike, but the fellow nobles as well as clan warriors are a bit dissappointed. The monks who follow the Path of Zen are at odds with those of Konfucian leaning.

You sit on your wooden throne and your servants and retainers, captains and soldiers, relatives and subjects, prostrate themselves before your throne.

Minister of Scrolls presents you the wooden scroll containing the curious writings:

Villages: 1
Castles: 1
Honour: Respectable
Adherence: Decent
Clan Rank: Fourth

Your Honour, as a Lord, must be an example to all; your Adherence to your own beliefs should also be honed; and the lower the Rank, the closer you are to the graces of the Imperial Family.

You know that if you fall to the Sixth, you will be akin to a wealthy commoner, and nothing stops your neighbour or rival or even a traveling swordsman from challenging you to leadership of Midoriyama. Despite all that happens in the future, you must avoid the Sixth Rank.

This is all you know.

25th Year of Emperor Yama, Earth Season

Songbirds chirp happily in the skies while fruit trees slowly adorn themselves with leaves. Elsewhere, peasants sow the first greenstalks and plant the red beans.

You, on the other hand, walk through the halls of your square castle, listening to the sounds of the household.

They seem a little... empty. You might be a Lord, but you own very little.

Perhaps...

A) Voices of scholars could fill the halls?
B) Laughter of a wife and maybe few concubines could break the silence?
C) Some songbirds and laughing cranes would add some music to your gardens?
D) This is as it should be?

Fixed, I've counted the colonization leftovers wrong.

1829
You investigate the stone house.

It looks very primitive, and you wonder who could live in such a place. You open the door and immediately sweet scent of honey and fresh bread hits your nostrils.

There she is, an old lady in equally old rags, preparing a feast seemingly for herself. The table is set with plates, and upon plates, there are breads, fruits, cooked and boiled meats. Some sort of thick broth in a large pot. A bowl of meaty chunks in a deep red sauce sits in the middle of the table, wisps of steam rising from it.

The old woman stirs something in a pot over the fireplace in the back. Beside the well in the corner near her, there's some sacks with what you assume is flour. Other than that, the house is empty... and you could swear it looks bigger on the inside.

"Herro." The old lady croaks as she looks at you with one eye, the other one long ago gouged by someone - or something - leaving an empty, scarred eyesocket. Thick, black sauce is dripping from the ladle she's holding. "I rarrly haf visitrrs. Come ssit and eat, yer look hunrry."

A) "Who are you, and what is this place?"
B) Invite yourself to the feast.
C) Refuse.
