@Ivy:

There was the noise of the background magickry, inherent for the planet.

Like a beacon, a small, but powerful, source of some ancient magic, could be felt.

To the north, right into the depths of the forest...

You try to quickly retreat the ambushers and regroup the army in preparation for deadly melee.

Quote
3*

Despite your leadership, many younger soldiers retreat too far or just run away from the field!

You still have numerical advantage, but will that be enough against brute force of Fomorians? Their screaming approach means you will soon find out.

Quote
6*

The brutish giants approach the wall of spears and axes, and that's when you order the archers and slingers to do their job. Small rocks and arrows rain upon the Fomorians, who get confused by sudden hail of projectiles. You follow up with commanding the soldiers to advance, and groups of brave Rugians hack and stab and slash away at the Fomorians.

Within an hour, the dust settles. All of the Fomorians lie dead, and jubilant soldiers quickly realize that only few dozen of their comrades have perished, giving you a decisive victory over this group of raiders.

While the common soldier drinks in celebration and memory of fallen comrades, the Marshal, the officers, and you, gather in the tent to debate the next move.

You decide to...

A) Find out where the Fomorian chief is and strike the heart of this hairy menace.
B) Go through each ruined hamlet and skewer every Fomorian there is.

You lay a plan to draw the Fomorians to the forested area. Most of your troops hang back while those making the ambush quickly conceal themselves amongst bushes, trees, against hillsides and other holes in the ground.

A group of few riders is selected to work as bait.

This group is easily eradicated before they can return! Some of the Fomorians who dealt with them squint their eyes, sniff the air, and then alert the others - perhaps they've seen someone from the ambush! About few dozen of hairy giants are now rushing towards the woods, clubs and big rocks in their hands!

A) We ought to regrup with the main force!
B) We must charge and meet the brutes head-on!!

"Looks like extra effort for the same outcome in battle. Could have its uses, though."

Ethan thought for a moment, pulled out the old, simple, iron axe, and did the magickry, trying to aim at dummy.

"The soldiers are too far to join, but I shall! Onwards!!"

The gathered officers yell in enthusiasm, and an expedition is swiftly prepared overnight.

Congratulations! King Bubba embarks on a military expedition!

During his absence, the Advisor and rest of the court will handle state and foreign affairs.

Villages visited by your forces on the way north cheer and celebrate your swift arrival and offer prayers both to the Old Gods and the New God to ensure your victory, while the priests of the former sacrifice goats and priests of the new one burn incense for the same.

One week int othe journey, scouts report finding a devastated village where the Fomorians can be seen skulking between the ruined huts and cottages. The forested area you stopped at isn't particularily wide, but it and surrounding environ could allow for many ambushes.

"Tactics, your Majesty?" Asks the Marshal.

A) Time for our mounted soldiers to charge and slaughter them all!
B) Our archers and slingers should ambush a few of them before main combat!
C) Our entire army should march forward and meet the brutes head on!
D) We hide amongst the bushes and trees here, and someone baits them here!

The lady stopped her horse inches away from Casslan, and the stallion reared briefly.

"Who dares stop me!? Out of my way, you mongrel!" At this, Prince Aland stepped forward.

"Apologies, my lady, but you almost trampled us. Are you in a hurry? Is something wrong? Maybe we could help?" The lady's horse stepped in one spot for a while as she looked over Prince and his group.

"Hmph. Have you seen... a young boy somewhere, unattended?"

"A young boy?"

"My son, goddess-damn-it! Short, gold-haired, thin, in darkly-dyed clothes! Me and my men woke up this morning at Afterbridge Inn and I found his bed empty! We've been searching for him since dawn! Have you seen him, or not!?

"Please calm down. And no, we've not seen any children walking around alone. How did this happen in the first place, did neither your men nor the innkeeper see your son leave the building?"

"Apparently! We're on our way home from Clearhost, and decided to spend the night at Afterbridge Inn. I've put Andertz to bed with that new glass toy of his, then I went to my own bedroom..." The loud lady squinted and stared at Aland a bit harder.

"You look familiar, have we met? Tell me your name!"

"We've probably met at my father's castle on one occassion or another. Prince Aland of Hestia, and you're...?" A curious mix of expressions flashed through the woman's face - from surprise, to distrust, to fear, ending with embarassment - before she hopped off her horse and hastily knelt in front of the Prince.

"Th-thousand apologies for my uncouth tongue, Prince Aland! I'm Countess Valentia Coldside of the Blue Mountains. It's a honor and a great surprise to see you here! I'm not of my mind today, please forgive me!" Prince Aland nodded and gave Casslan a sign to put down the shield.

"It's alright, please stand up." The Countess stood up, and Prince Aland took his hand off his sword. "You were saying your son went to sleep with a new toy? Where did you get it from?"

"From that shifty-looking merchant we've met on the road! He had dozens of these fake-looking baubles inside that purple cloak of his. I was going to pay him no heed but Andertz took a liking to some sort of shiny glass box the man had, so I gave in and bought it for fifty gold-"

"That must've been Sir Purplecloak!"

"Wha- who, who's that?"

"Countess Coldside, this man has been wrecking havoc with his 'toys and baubbles' for quite a few days now, either by accident or by some malevolent purpose. The wine he sold to some monks made them go crazy, a trinket that was supposed to help with spirits of departed roused dead in a village and caused deaths of many youths there. The glass box you've bought for your son might be equally dangerous!"

"Fuck's sake! I knew that merchant was shifty and everything, but that's just... just..."

"Mayhaps any mages or healers from your entourage can scry for the box? We ought to assume it is magical in nature. They could pool their magics or something and try to-"

"Apologies, my prince... but I have no magicians in my entourage. For... personal reasons."

"I see." There was a brief, awkward silence before Aland turned to Alixia and Ivy. "I know this is a long shot and neither of you are actual scriers and diviners, but... please, do you feel any magic besides yours in the vicinity?"

"I beseech you, try your hardest! If anything ill happens to Andertz..."

"Like I said, I trust their opinions. Welcome to the team, Orf."

"Hey, thanks! You will see, I won't be in anyone's way..."

//Orf the Troublemaker joins as an Ally!

And so, the search for the elusive and dangerous Sir Purplecloak continued...

Morning of two days after, just past the bridge crossing over River Clear...

The bridge disappeared behind the thick treeline that surrounded the group, the wide cobblestone providing a nice, even surface for marching.

Not everyone was happy with the walking, however...

"You, you put on... q-quite a marching pace, Prince Aland."

"Thank you. I hope that at this rate we get to the Afterbridge Inn before noon."

"...that's not what I meant..." A shout came from the front, as if someone called someone, and then a galloping horse could be heard, coming right towards the group.

From around the corner of the forest road, came running a dark brown horse with beige mane. A lady in polished armor, with long blue hair and a shining sword in her hand, rode on it.

Prince Aland put his hand on the handle of his sword, but didn't draw it just yet.

You allocate more funds to the wedding. The Treasury will surely feel it.

The council of war gathers, as the officers, headed by the brave Marshal, ask you two questions:

"My liege! Shall you lead us on glorious crusade against the Fomorians?"

"And should we recall our soldiers from the west? A fourth of our soldiers is employed there, and their contribution to our purge of Fomorians might not be insignificant!"

A) "I stay here, and our soldiers in the west. Good luck, brave Marshal!"
B) "The soldiers are too far to join, but I shall! Onwards!!"
C) "I need to take care of my home first, but it is wise to recall our soldiers from the west. Wait until their return before you clash with Fomorians!"
D) "Call the troops and prepare my horse! The entire military might of Rug shall be brought down upon the crude brutes of the north!"

"The army shall be sent to deal with the Fomorian threat!" There are things to discuss with your officers and knights, but first, the other group.

The courtiers responsible for wedding enter with their heads already bowing.

"My liege! We have encountered a difficulty that we fear might not be resolved without influx of cash. Namely, this year's harvests of reed, plums and chokes are alarmingly low. Brewers across the provinces have little ingredients to make alcohol with, and are charging higher prices than usual. If we want to host the wedding properly, we need alcohol. To get alcohol, we need more money than your Majesty have allocated."

A) "Then we shall drink water!"
B) "Then you shall have the money! A wedding without alcohol is no wedding!"
C) "Then my people will have a word with the artisans to make an exception for my wedding!"

You decide to talk with the elders and mayors from the north first.

"Your majesty, fomorians are back!" They wail dramatically once in the throne rooms. "They're despoiling sheep and devouring our maidens, stealing livestock and valuables!"

"What are fomorians?"

"Ugly, fat, giant people! Can't speak, can't count without fingers, but are ravenous and brutal like wolves! We plead your Majesty to send the army and deal with these brutes at once!"

A) "Alright! Our army shall march forth to kill the Fomorians!"
B) "My thoughts and prayers go to your people, I'm sure your militias will be able to handle the Fomorians easily."
C) "How about I give you money so that you can employ mercenaries and adventurers to do some Fomorian hunting?"

There was an attempt at seizing more lands.
