You send the soldiers to defend the border!

505 AD, Mid-Spring

Quote
2

Terrible news come from the borderlands!

The hooded horsemen have easily dealt humilitating defeats to your soldiers, and hundreds of them were lost in combat. The raids have not stopped, indeed, the victory against your forces only emboldened the mysterious raiders to strike deeper into your lands, and strike more often.

As you prepare to meet with your nobles about the situation, a gate guard comes over to speak with you.

"My liege. A man calling himself Leokwas of Androsia has come over, bearing a letter from his King. Its something about trade deal of sorts."

A) "I shall meet with my nobles first, then meet this Leokwas."
B) "Bring him in!"
C) "Throw him out! I have more important things to do than decide upon 'trade deals'!"

2418
You decide against hassling the commoners.

505 AD, Spring

Quote

Wagonfuls of gold arrive at the palace! Part of it is stored in the Treasury, while the rest is deployed into hands of skilled managers and governors.

Kingdom of Leror, located behind the mountains in north-east, is attacking the border settlements!

Or is it?

Reports arrive about hooded horsemen pillaging the villages and massacring anyone who is unfortunate enough to get in their way. Surprisingly, the horsemen take no prisoners nor they steal the livestock or plunder the settlements, instead just razing them to the ground.

They wear brightly-colored fabrics and their horses are of unknown, dark breed. Neither the tactics nor costumes nor the horses are anything that Lerorians are known to deploy...

A) This is worrying. We must send adventurers to investigate this strange occurence!
B) Muster the army! We must protect the border!
C) Muster the army! We shall do what Lerorians did upon their border settlements!
D) Muster the diplomats. Surely our distant neighbours can listen to reason?

You hand over the pendant with the mussel.

The elderly man nods and disappears in front of your eyes.

Suddenly feeling very tired, you march back to the bed and quickly fall asleep. In the morning, you can't remember nothing about the meeting except that it did occur...

504 AD, End of the Year

The winter came and went, for once being uneventful and quite mild, too.

Sitting in the chambers, warming your feet with the fire in the pit, your moment of comfiness is interrupted by the Advisor coming over with the Scrolls of Kingdom Status. You can never get a rest, do you?

Happiness: 4
Population: 4
Economy: 3
Army: 3

You peruse the scrolls and ponder.

A) "Maybe we can press some peasants into the Army?"
B) "Maybe we can tax the peasants a bit harder for extra coin?"
C) "Maybe next year, these numbers will be higher."

You decide to host the hunt and sponsor a festival.

504 AD, Mid-Autumn

Quote
1

The hunt is a complete social disaster; not only the game was few and meager, but the boredom, length of the hunt and maybe a bit too much alcohol has caused splits, arguments and drunken bouts of fisticuffs amongst your nobles.

The overall mood in turn spilled into the commoners, who, while enjoying the festival, didn't think much of it.

A few days after that, you startle awake. A sudden thought spurs you into action and you quietly leave your bed, wandering without thought amongst the higher floors of the castle. You check the library, the storeroom, the old tower, searching for something - but you have no idea what.

Finally, in one of the side guest chambers, you find an elderly man - or you think it is an elderly man - supporting themselves with a large branch. You can't see his eyes in the moon-lit chamber, but you can feel his stare, drilling into you.

He extends his right hand towards you, the inside of the palm turned upwards.

"You have something. I need something. A gift. A payment. Long overdue." The man speaks with a croaking, old voice.

Suddenly you realize that there is something in your hand. It is the pendant with the mussel, the one you've found on you after the meeting with the Sea Man.

A) "If this is yours, I have no right to keep it."
B) "This is mine! Mine! My... my precious!"
C) "I cannot part with it, but I can exchange it for... something."

"Cheers"! "Cheers." They clink their glasses and Lucifer takes a big sip. Moments later, he coughs up.

"Oh, fuck, what is this, piss juice?"

"Told you, it is an acquired taste." Lucifer glares at the white-haired man, who now barely withholds a smug grin, and then puts the tank of Ribesnero away. Adam, in the meanwhile, takes a sip of his own.

"Eugh, fuck. I don't really understand your choice of drinks, man." Lucifer wipes his lips with the sleeve of his jacket and smacks his tongue.

"No, I need, I need a shot of something hot and sweetish to get rid of the aftertaste. Yo, barkeep, what've you got?"

...Hot and sweetish?

Fiery and Sweet? Fiery and Fruity??

A) Get him a shot of Wet Jet
B) Get him a shot of Pneumo
C) Get him a shot of Pontifex
D) "It would be better for you if you gave me something more specific."

You decide to keep the necklace for now.

504 AD, Autumn

The light rain and lots of sunlight make it a splendid weather this year.

So much that your nobles clamor for a hunt to be hosted!

"While we, the high ones, hunt for splendid game, let the peasants enjoy a festival!" They say.

A) "Indeed! Time to start preparing!"
B) "We can have a hunt, but commoners need no festivals."
C) "No!"

2427
"You know that Ribesnero is quite sour, right? I'm just gonna point that out..."

"Yes. Can I have my drink now?" You shrug and pour him a tank full of mouth-twisting Ribesnero. He lets you scan his credchip, again. (+40c)

Today's earnings: 262c
Monthly earnings: 749c/9600c

He doesn't take a sip.

Less than four minutes later, the main gate opens and several men in jumpsuits arrive - led by gaudily clad individual who is at least 7 feet tall.

He has spiky dark blue hair, diamon-shaped orange shades, white leather pants that are at least a size too small - or so you believe - and a flashy red leather jacket, with numerous metal pins and buttons reflecting the lights.

Leading the group to the counter, he stops momentarily, before splaying his arms upwards.

"Is that Taylor!? TAYLOR! MY MAN!!" The newcomer jumps onto the stool besides the white-haired youth, who is about half his size by comparison.

"Hello, Lucifer. Nice to see you well after all this time." The youth puts on a toothy smile that couldn't be more fake. "Also, it's Adam for quite some time no-"

"Adam, Jo, Taylor, you can't expect me to keep up with your name changes! You will always be Taylor for me! Hey boys, you wanting Cherrybombs?" The men behind nodded and yelled in agreement.

"Hey, sweet bartender man, get the boys a round of Cherrybombs. Eight in total!"

You prepare eight shots of Cherrybomb; surprisingly, it is Lucifer who shows his (hot pink-and-silver striped) credchip. You scan it to take creds for the drinks. (+64c)

With the 'boys' out of the way and seated at two tables at the back, Lucifer rubs his hands. It's also when he notices that Adam is taking a sip of his drink.

"Hey, Taylor! What's this drink?" Adam, having barely wet his lips on Ribesnero, sets the tank down.

"Oh, this? One of my new favorites. An acquired taste-"

"Yo! Barkeep! I want what Taylor is having, alright?"

A) Give a warning.
B) He wants a tank of Ribesnero, he gets a tank of Ribesnero.

Taricus you cannot move armies deployed in the same turn ;v

2430
"A sea creature wandered out of its waters, and is troubling my lands!"

"Eyes do not see..." Suddenly, the waters around you explode and you see the monstrous sponge, as if you're a bird circling over it. Then you plunge into it, and lose counsciousness.

When you wake up, you're alone on the hill... with a small pendant sitting on your chest. It's a gaudily colored mussel on a dark green reed.

Dressing up and taking your belongings, you wonder if the pendant has any meaning. You take it with you, of course.

Although you're not sure if the sponge has been dealt with, the whole experience has left you with a feeling of... accomplishment. Something tells you it is time to head home.

You prepare for a trip back to your palace.

Congratulations! Vindaren has concluded the Epic Quest!

You return to the palace, escorted by soldiers of a border-land noble whose domain you've crossed on your way back.

"My liege, the monstrous sponge is gone!" The Advisor and the courtiers regale you with a tale of the sponge disappearing, one morning, in the thick mists that rose up from the ground. It has not been seen since then.

You ask them when that was, and then you count the days back.

The sponge 'disappeared' the very day you spoke with the Sea Man.

People across the Kingdom celebrate the sponge's demise, hailing you as miracle-doer!

504 AD, Late Summer

Sitting in the library, you turn the mussel-pendant in your hands, the moonlight shining onto it through the open window

You cannot sleep, your mind bothered by the strange pendant. It is as if the thought of the ownership is putting strain on your mind...

A) Let's smash it then, perhaps it is not for me to have.
B) Let's sell it then, maybe it will get me a penny or two?
C) I shall claim it as my own anyway!
D) Let's put it away for now. The answer might come on its own.
E) The books claim that dwarves are masters of jewelry and mysteries, they ought to know what this is. I must send forth a request for them to come!
