The next few minutes got a little confusing.

In the cacophony of voices and yelling of the numerous commanders, there was no clear reasoning. The command chain almost lost it completely, but ultimately, it was Kyri Snow of Revolutionaries and Klaus von Sternburg from Royalists - those two voices dominated the others and ultimately were inspiration for their fellow soldiers.

Moments later, Berry Smiles the wraith took her spear and decided to end the life of Lord Apel Cinnamon. Her ghastly-quick movements were bane to the armored man, who soon got the spear lodged in his guts. But, his endurance was exemplary and he managed to stand on his two legs a bit more.

Just in time to repel another attack - it was Sir Biff. The two men locked in a melee, both blocking each other strikes with grace and experience. No blood shed there, in the end.

In the meanwhile, Tallow Knight rushed at Lordo II, trying to slaughter the enemy commander. Once again, the hefty, short spear proved to be bane of the armored guys - whilst the stab was shallow, it did wound the left leg of Lordo II.

Nearby, there was another duel going on - Cromwell Jackson tried to kill Klaus von Sternburg. Alas, the sword couldn't find a good place to pierce through Sternburh's armor, and thusly the commander went through this duel without even a scratch.

Few seconds later, Tallow Knight cursed in pain as the hatchet of Dr. Pimpmeister Mc. Bonecarver smashed against his shoulder with ease, cutting through the layers of his leather armor.

No deaths this time~!

One day, clouds gatehred above the Longwood fort. The Gor'tuhn pointed at the sky and grumbled - and suddenly thunderbolts began to rain on them! The heavenly lances struck their entire squads and turned them into a crisp. It was clearly a work of magic - murderous magic, as barely any of the four-armed giants survived to tell the tale.

Gor'tuhn of VUTAR destroyed!

With the VUTAR's army out of the question, the Damloks quickly seized Longwood.

In the west, after getting news that Gor'tuhn threat was postponed, one of Damlok armies marched into new land, sticking the blue banner of SEIOS in the midst of it.

Now active: VUTAR (GreatWyrmGold)!

However, there are always buttons like loo'k' or 'v'iew in Dwarf Fortress to quickly determine what is what...

Already pointed out. How often do you use 'k' really? Do you 'k' every g in the map every 30 seconds or so to make sure you aren't being ambushed?

I actually do o:

My games are more often paused than running real-time, really. You can't maintain proper fortress if you just let it run freely without strict supervision :P

2) Answer is the one on the right. This is what I meant by basing your fort's survival on distinguishing the shades of colors on characters. If I wasn't paying attention, what I thought were a flock of geese, could very well have a goblin with them. Not to mention that with ascii, you can't distinguish what kind of goblins are invading you either. Are those a squad of deadly lashers? Or simply a squad of unarmed goblin wrestlers?

Personally I use ASCII for two three reasons:

A) Any graphical tileset murders my framerate
B) In my mind, DF is a roguelike, and a true roguelike is in ASCII :P
C) Graphical tilesets are often large, and my screen resolution is small (1024x768), so most of the tilesets don't even work.

The only thing I always change is color set, because default colors are either dark, quirky or eyeblasting.
