You refuse to provide money, explaining that your Treasury is rather empty at the moment. The priests shake their heads and leave, loudly complaining about the impiety of regional rulers.

1339 AD, Midwinter

The regimental tally has been composed for this year.

There have been only few dozen viable recruits for the Army.

1339 AD, End of the Year

As your wife keeps giggling on your lap, you would rather conclude the day and carry her off to your bed.

Alas, the Advisor decides that it is the best moment to bring in the Scrolls of Kingdom Status. You sigh in defeat, Fortana hurriedly vacates your lap, and the large vellums are rolled out on your desk:

Happiness: 4
Population: 3
Economy: 4
Army: 2

"My liege, our military forces are rather small and this year's recruitment wasn't very good. Perhaps we should press criminals, vagabonds and free youth into service?"

A) "Nah, it will anger the people and lower discipline of our troops."
B) "Do it! We need the bolster our numbers as soon as possible."

"Also, the cartographers have managed to put on the changes on the old maps of Methiant. Bless the defunct Empire, at least their map-making was a thing to praise."

"I'm also going with Prince! The more bodyguards he has, the better."

And the math didn't kill you :P

The assorted priests and priestesses enter your throne room.

"Greetings, King of Glennuaine, may the Pantheon bless you!" Their leader speaks to you. "Luathbas has suffered a fire this Spring, and as we're not exactly a rich community, we've had to venture forth looking for donations to rebuild one of the temples that was burnt down. Alas, the Koi, the Talablath, and even Cydwyllian council was deaf to our pleading. Therefore we ask you, help us rebuild the magnificent Temple, and suredly the Pantheon will bless your rulership!"

A) "Sorry, got no money to spend."
B) "As you wish! Glennuaine's money will be spend to rebuild the temple!"

You decide to sponsor the festivals celebrating this year's harvests.

Everyone liked that.

1339 AD, Winter

Religious turmoil in the Rucusian Empire - their Crown Prince was baptised according to the Martialist rites, the first and largest of Damedian heresies that caused the initial split in 1273.

Speaking of matters of religion - a delegation of priests from the Holy City-State of Luathbas has arrived. They're asking for donations, apparently.

A) Bring the prestigious guests in!
B) Sorry, not running a charity here.

You give the dwarves a green light for prospecting and geological surveying of the hills. The dwarves bow their heads and hurriedly leave.

1339 AD, Autumn

Harvests this year have been quite plentiful! Vegetables, fruits and grains have been stockpiled in the granaries and every peasant has had enough to both feed their families and sell the excess on the markets.

'Such a bontiful year is a sign from the Gods!' Claim both the commoners and clergy alike. 'We ought to celebrate with festivals and feasts!' Obviously, the people want you to pay the expenses for their drinks and entertainment.

A) Party time for all!
B) No parties, get back to work.

You repeal the tax, but the money will remain in the Treasury.

The Hurthlings squeakily thank you for your mercy and magnificence, and leave hurriedly.

The dwarven delegation from Emeden is led in next. The bald, scrawny-looking dwarves enter, wearing dark robes and flowing capes.

"Greetings, King Eyrdri. Your predecessor turned us way thrice, but we're not going to let prejudice go in the way of industry and wealth-making! The hills surrounding your valley kingdom have their riches, be it ores and gems, untapped. The earth itself cries out to our runesmiths that it wishes to disgorge its mineral wealth. And we are willing to search the soil if you allow us to upturn the rocks and level the hills. Once riches are uncovered, we ask only for a cut of profits to go for treasuries of Emeden."

A) "First find the riches, then we can talk about ventures and profits."
B) "Agreed! We shall share the riches of our land with the enteprising dwarves!"
C) "Our valley is for growing foodstuffs and fruit-bearing vines, not heavy industry. No deal."

This time little miss dark murder had less luck. The undead being, damaged, still retaliated, raking its fetid claw across her face.

You decide to meet with Hurthlings first.

The short, thing creatures with their round faces and curly hair clap their hands as they approach the throne.

"Hooman king! The Short Tax makes fun of us and we no longer can pay the monee with each harvest! Please repeel the tax! Our peeple need the money to buy theengs! Please, please give the stolen monees back to us." As the Hurthlings' big eyes fill up with water, you quickly remind yourself of the Short Tax... ah yes.

It was instituted by Brean early in his reign, putting a monetary burden on Hurthlings to 'ensure thier contribution to the State', in exchange for being protected against other Kingdoms. Brean's enforcers made sure that Hurthlings wouldn't say no.

The Advisor scratches his cheek and leans towards you. "My liege, the tax is the only reason we have money in the Treasury, for we have no real trading or production profits going."

A) "I will repeal the tax, but what was taken by Brean's men will be used to better the living of my subjects!"
B) "You shall be given the latest tax money, and the tax itself will be repealed! Rejoice!"
C) "The Tax is a must to keep our kingdom running! I'm sorry, but it will remain for the time being."

3326
Knowing your ways of heraldry, you quickly propose a compromise - a barrulet of green. The thin strip goes horizontally through the middle, quite symmetrically splitting the two halves with two vines each.

Your courtiers nod and murmur at the design, clearly both impressed and satisfied.

1339 AD, Midsummer

You hear that the southerners are having even more religious trouble - first, Damdamians were split in adherence to Damedian and Lucusian cults, and now a more stringent Lucusian theologian have founded his own Damedian offshoot, called Montanism.

Which branch of Damedian faith is that now? Fifth? Sixth? You wish it was early 1200s, it was easier to keep track back then.

As for more immediate issues, two delegations of non-humans are wanting an audience with you. First is the Hurthlings, your subjects, wanting the Short Tax condemned and the stolen Hurthling money given back.

The other is delegation of Dwarves from Emeden, offering a joint enterprise in mining of precious metals in the Glennuaine valleys and vineyards, if any are found.

A) I'm having a day off today! No audiences!
B) Our little subjects take priority! Let the Hurthlings in.
C) Dwarves do not like to wait, I should talk to them first.

3327
I'd really like C Redesign the arms so that the green doesn't cover the vines, such as with a cross or as a checkered background, acknowledging our regional past and the hurthling contributions to our state yet without the tinge of subservience to a vanished(??) empire.

Sure.

3328
Sounds like war is far off enough that updating some of the ancillary items like the subs and making new Condillacs would be a good plan!

^This.

You decide to take Fortana as your wife.

Due to circumstances and the time, the wedding is frugally prepared. The girl was cute and pretty, and that's about it. Just like you remember her from meetings with her father...

1339 AD, Summer

"With the scarf!"

"Without!"

The shouting of your courtiers have brought your attention (and disrupted your afternoon reading, too). The reason for the commotion soon becomes clear - your men are arguing about the Glennuaine's coat of arms.

Glennuaine acquired it about 60 years ago, when Yoe VI, then Emperor of Methiant, has reorganized his domain and split the fringe lands into vassalships. This solution worked just as anyone could expect, and Brean, styling himself a King, took the banner as his own.

The banner depicts the national 'treasures' of Glennuaine - red vines on white field. There's a large scarf of green going diagonally across it - all vassals of Methiant were given banners with such scarf to showcase their submission to Methiantese throne.

Spoiler: Glennuaine's Coat (click to show/hide)

"We have to tear the green off! We're free men, not Methiantese vassals!!"

"It was design made by one of Hurthling clans! It's symbol of our communal pride!!"

The bickering is starting to give you a headache. You decide that...

A) The coat of arms should remain as it is.
B) Only red and white will be colors of Glennuaine.
C) A redesign is needed, to make the green an accent, not the dominant colour.

You send the Army off to fight the rebel force.

1339 AD, Late Spring

The fighting against the rebel goes quite well, and in three battles, Yoe is defeated, captured and executed.

Unfortunately, the casualties amongst your Firemen were quite large! More than a thousand failed to return from the battlefield.

Your co-conspirators - now nobles at your court - have asked for a private meeting.

"You need a wife and a heir, my liege." They say. "Fortunately, our good friend Randulf has an adolescent daughter, Fortana, who needs a husband." You scratch your chin, trying to remember the girl.

She was cute, but that's about it.

A) "Sorry, but the seat at my side is reserved for someone else."
B) "Agreed! Fortana shall be my wife and Queen of Glennuaine!"
