Roll To Dodge / Re: RTD Starlight Mechanized Corps
« on: August 30, 2023, 02:11:52 pm »
Maia Sanders: Of course, Commander Shiek. Operation Wrecking Ball begins now. I will inform our Pilots of their immediate deployment.

13th Early Spring 1002
OPERATION 5: WRECKING BALL
Twenty-five minutes later

The tactical screen shows the arrival of Maglev 1000 in the operation area, being directed by the on-site emergency operators to a quarter of the power plant site near to the endangered Reactor #6.

The Maglev itself soon comes to a stop by a small control building. Soon enough the camera feeds inside the Pilots' cockpits come online as well.

Thedros Palaikos: Palaikos reporting. I'm ready.

Carla Whiteforest: Whiteforest here, ready more than ever!

Sota Tamayashi: Tamayashi reporting all systems optimal.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Langrisser ready, sir.

The doors open and the ramp extends, allowing the four Mechas to descend it to the backdrop of flames, smoke and emergency lights blinking on the roofs of various facilities around the site.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Talk about a messy situation...

Carla Whiteforest: I'm getting strange Mu readings, I think this is power noise or something?

Thedros Palaikos: Yeah, there might be some interference from all the energy network stuff that's currently open. I thought they would disable the reactors manually?

Sota Tamayashi: No, they can't afford to do that. From what I'm getting on the public comms they're ready to evacuate the personnel if needed, but three out of six reactors are still running... so I'm worried about possibility of explosion.

Carla Whiteforest: Explosion? Explosion of what, exactly?

Sota Tamayashi: The reactors?

Carla Whiteforest: Whuh?

Thedros Palaikos: Fission reactors would explode, yeah. These? These are fusion reactors, Sota. All they could do is make a loud noise and stop working and then people around this place will have many days of hard work to get them back online. So that's why it's important we protect the working ones.

Sota Tamayashi: Oh, um... well, yeah. Knew that, just checking if you do.

Carla Whiteforest: Of course.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: We can't split in here, it would be too dangerous for all involved. Especially if something starts falling on our heads or the Mu show up. Speaking of which... There is beeping on the sensors of all four pilots, but its Eva who levels her rifle and sends bolt after bolt into the alley between the nearby capacitor housing unit and Reactor #6. Horribly mutated and fire-scarred Mu fall one by one.

Thedros Palaikos: *whistle*

Carla Whiteforest: Show off!

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: I wish I could pull this off every time Mu show up.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: 1 from Roll, +3 from Computers, -2 from Threat Level = 2

Sota Tamayashi: Hold on, I've just received a request from the Reactor #6 staff.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: What is it?

Sota Tamayashi: They're asking to reset the power distribution unit right... Sota turns his mecha leftwards, towards a small PDU the size of a van. "Here. I'm not very good with computers and the terminal is in Dayamato only, it seems."

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: I can help. Translate for me and I'm sure we can do it. Thedros and Whiteforest, please provide cover.

Thedros Palaikos: Roger.

Carla Whiteforest: Roger! It takes few minutes before Eva and Sota manage to do something with the terminal.

The console beeps and turns black.

Sota Tamayashi: Oops?

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Oops is right. Let's, uh, try again, unless it's all gone to hell already...

Quote from: Computers Test, Teamwork
Sota Tamayashi: 5 from Roll, +1 from Computers, -2 from Threat Level = 4
Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: 1 from Roll, +3 from Computers, -2 from Threat Level = 2
Final result: 3

The console gets back on-line, but there's a foreboding yellow light blinking.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Well, it has been reset alright. The system has boot up and is receiving outside commands now.

Sota Tamayashi: And the yellow light?

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: No idea. But we did what we were asked to.

Quote from: Crowd Control Test, Teamwork
Thedros Palaikos: 3 from Roll, +1 from Crowd Control, -2 from Threat Level = 2
Carla Whiteforest: 5 from Roll, +1 from Roll, -2 from Threat Level = 4
Final result: 3

Beeping on the sensors announces that more Mu are closing in.

Carla Whiteforest: That's a lot of them coming! The second wave of Mu is thrice larger than the one Eva had to deal with. The spiny, emaciated, vaguely canine-shaped Mu storm the alleys and go for Thedros en masse. Carla and Thedros shoot at the alien monsters but some of them get past the hail of laser blasts and crash and bite into Thedros' mecha.

Thedros Palaikos: Dang things-get off me! Thedros has to resort to punching to get his Mecha's hull free of Mu, but they keep coming! Soon the internal consoles begin beeping foreboding yellow and orange lights over his suit's arms and legs.

VanZer995-001: 1/2 Hitpoints left!

Sota Tamayashi: 1, +1 from Crowd Control, +1 from Support Fire, -2 from Threat Level = 1
Final result: 2

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Hang on in there, we will provide fire support! Eva and Sota direct their mechas towards the combat zone.

It is pandemonium in the tight area between Reactor #6 and the power network unit, as the Mu latch onto Thedros, gnawing his mecha's rifle and causing energy explosion. Others rush and attack Carla's mecha, and soon her console starts beeping some alerts alongside yellow lights over the Suit's torso.

The greatest insult to the whole injury however comes when Sota, distracted by the mayhem, unloads a laser bolt towards Mu that misses and hits what's behind it - the freshly-reset power distribution unit. It explodes in bright display of electric arcs and heavy sparking, and its console catches fire. Soon enough, lightning all over the Reactor #6 starts going out.

VanZer995-001: Weaponry damage! Battling and Crowd Control will be penalized until fixed!
VanZer995-002: 1/2 Hitpoints left!

Goals:
1. Eliminate Mu Threat.
*Not Yet Complete
2. Secure Fusion Reactors #1, #2 and #4.
*Fusion Reactors Secured: none
3. Prevent damage to Fusion Reactors #3, #5 and #6.
*Fusion Reactor #3 status: N/A
*Fusion Reactor #5 status: N/A
*Fusion Reactor #6 status: DAMAGED!

Only after this terrible display of bad luck and hectic fighting, do the Mu get bested. Approximately thirty mutated, twisted corpses litter the area but the Mu readings have barely ticked towards zero.

Maglev: Maglev to Command Staff and Suit Pilots. We're getting some very angry shouting from the head of power plant staff, and it doesn't sound pretty untranslated. The Suits deployed are already damaged and we're not very deep into the mission. Shall we consider aborting the deployment?

Thedros Palaikos: Well, my main weapon is badly damaged, but I'm sure we can do it-

Carla Whiteforest: And I'm not!

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Calm down! It's just one setback.

Sota Tamayashi: I'm already getting requests to move and help with the fires that have appeared by the power stations adjacent to Reactor #5! We need orders, Commander Shiek. Should we continue the mission, or not?

"Fine, take the Purser to ensure the money's alright."

"Thank you Captain. We will be back shortly."

10th Midwinter
Late Morning
Costas, Isle of Costas

The Purser and the Surgeon are back in few hours.

"I've procured all the supplies I have needed and then some, Captain. We're more than equipped to handle anything but a ship-wide plague."

"Good. We're off to Pointas then!"

The topmen set the sails, the navigator steers the ship out of the harbor. Soon, Santa Julia takes to the seas once more!

11th Midwinter
Early Night
Karib Sea, between Costas and Pointas

Early in your sleep, you're shaken away. First thing you see if the First Mate's face.

And then you hear it:
hhhoooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooommm...
"What in all devils was that?"

"A sea demon! A demon of the waves, Captain! Come see or you will not believe it!"
hhhyyoooOOOooOOOoooooommm...
Wide-eyed, you put on your jacket and follow the First Mate out of your cabin, who then ducks as to not be seen.

You glance to your right, noticing silhouettes of crewmen hiding behind the starboard rails, and then you not only hear it, but also see it.

A black hump on the line between the dark waters and deep blue night sky, its silhouette illuminated by the half moon at the horizon. An elongated tentacle, a large gaping maw upon its end. Flabby fins the size of your ship, on its back, on its sides, splashing waters as the watery devil is making its way parallel to the Santa Julia.
hhhyyooooooOOOOOOOMmm...
It has no eyes, for which you are thankful, but somehow you feel that it can sense the fear of your crew, and your own.

And then, with utter terror, you realize - it is getting closer.

"What is that thing!?"
hhhooooooooooOOOOOOOooommmm...
"A mermaid, Captain. Mermaid of the Karibs!" Says the Navigator, sitting on the deck and huddling the shaft of the steering wheel.

"It's getting closer!"
hhhyyoooOOOOOoooommm...
"We know, Captain, and we dread it! If we continue on this course, we will bump against it, and then we're all dead!" Explains the First Mate, making the sign of the goddess on his head and kissing his thumb.

"Then change course!"

"It can hear creak of steering of the rudder and furling of the sails, they say!"

"Drop the anchor, halt the ship!"

"If it can hear wood and cloth, then it will surely hear the rattle of metal chains! We're doomed anyway!"
hhhyoOOOOOOOOOOOMmmm...

A) "Drop the anchor, we must avoid collision at all cost!!"
B) "Change course, we must avoid collision at all cost!"
C) "Then keep steady and pray to Goddess we miss it!"
D) "Load cannons, prepare to fire! We shall scare it away!"

408
"We set sail to Pointas!"

"For supplies?" The Surgeon asks, showing himself amongst the officers. "You've asked, sir, to talk about this later. It is later now. Can I have the four hundred ducats I need to procure tinctures and herbs ashore?"

A) "You can buy tinctures and herbs after we do business at Pointas."
B) "Fine, take the Purser to ensure the money's alright."
C) "You can have two hundred at best."
D) "No, we can do with what you have."

409
"We're done here, let's go back to Santa Julia."

"Of course, sir." You and the Purser walk back to the Santa Julia.

When you board it, you spot six unfamiliar sailors, seated on their sacks and talking with the others from your ship. They notice you and stand up, and the Navigator quickly approaches.

"Captain Finley! The First Mate wanted to present you these six sailors he picked up at local taverns."

"Where is he?"

"I am here, Captain!" Says the First Mate, venturing up from below deck. He approaches you and presents you the six.

"Joao Brava, Edmundo Talavera, Miguel Costoria, Alberto de Ultagrado, Arsenio Sanchez, Erico Esquavito." The six new sailors stand at attention.

"And they're willing to work for company wage?"

"All six, Captain." You look at the men in question; twenty or thirty-something old, with builds of either muscle or endurance. They're probably ones with several voyages here and there under their belts.

"Good. Good! Have them go with the Purser to get them written into the book of accounting."

"Aye, sir!" The First Mate whistles at the six sailors and they walk away.

10th Midwinter
Early Morning
Costas, Isle of Costas

The First Mate, the Navigator and the Purser all enter your cabin early in the morning.

"Captain, our sailors with help of those from the Lion have finished repairing the sails and timberwork. We've already dismissed the Zeelanders. The Santa Julia is ready to set sail."

"The question is, where do we go next?"

"Somewhere profitable, yes?" The Purser clears his throat. "Considering our finances."

A) "We set sail to... (insert port name here)!"
B) "First of all, I have a question about... (insert topic here)?"

410
You call for the Archdruid.

He arrives some time later that day, and listens in to the prophecy, and your concerns about it.

"My liege, the omens in sky and earth do not portent any calamity to befall your Kingdom, subjects or family in the coming days. The visitors and their watery oracles are clearly mistaken. And, since when do you listen to them?" The courtiers nod and murmur to each other.

A) "Indeed! Guards, take our guests and show them the way back to their lands!"
B) "Charlatans! They are conspiring against me, throw the Suisto delegation into the dungeon!"
C) "I still think they wouldn't take the trip if they weren't serious about it. The sending of lumber westwards must cease!"
D) "No, no, I am convinced of their truthfulness, and they have to be rewarded for it! Bring them copper and lead!"

411
Briefly forgot this is not atheist run, hold on :P

You order the Suiso delegation in. They wear linen, brightly colored, and fur caps on their heads. Their hands and fingers, long and thin, are adorned with bone rings and bracelets.

"Greetings, King Syrus of Surinthomus! We have come to warn you of a great calamity that is lurking to befall you and your peoples!" The courtiers gathered in the room immediately start murmuring, whispering and grumbling.

"And what would that be?" The Advisor says as the delegates bow their heads.

"A great calamity!" Says their leader, then takes his hat off, exposing his sparse, messy, dark blonde hair. "You see, ours is the faith of the Waters, and we have oracles - shellsingers - who venture into the depths to procure shells of specific kind, and then they listen to their murmur, discerning prophecies of both great and mundane import. Our King, Tuomas, has recently asked the greatest of Shellsingers, to advise him on the future. Imagine his surprise when he was told a prophecy that would affect not his kingdom, but someone's else!"

"What's the prophecy?" You ask loudly, and silence enters the place, as your courtiers are, of course, very interested in it as well.

"Here it is, our King ordered us to memorize the lines. It goes like this: When the young star rises in the east, a bloated, old one falls. When the trees resume moving west, the ice giant rages. When the young star loses part of its luster, it crashes upon its domain in voracious flames, causing great stress, and famine, and death." Your courtiers resume their murmuring, but the Advisor silences them with his staff.

"Let me elaborate, what our King and his advisors believe this means." The leader of the delegation says. "The first part, is about you. You, a rising star, have cast down the bloated, corrupt Usurper - the old star. Few years after your peoples started sending lumber down the river - to the west - there was one winter of terrible blizzards that even our people struggled against. And recently, as our King has learned, you have lost your son in terrible tragedy - you have lost part of your luster."

"And the crashing part?" The leader of the delegation shakes his head.

"We do not know what that might be. But our wise men had some ideas and each is worse than previous, up tp and including the Sun herself falling down upon your kingdom. King Tuomas ordered us to sail upriver, to your Kingdom, and warn you, as the shellsingers say that if one part of the prophecy will cease to be true, so shall it will never not come to pass in full."

"Cease sending lumber down the river, to western kingdoms, is what you mean!" The Treasurer speaks up, glaring at the westerners.

"You cannot bring neither Usurper, nor your son, back to life, King Syrus." The Suiso diplomat states the obvious. "So this is the only way!"

A) "Thank you for this warning. We shall cease lumber trade immediately!"
B) "Listening to seashells and divining the future out of them is the stupidest idea I have ever heard about. Begone at once, and trouble my people no more!"
C) "You've ventured so far to warn us despite not knowing much. Your King and your people ought to be rewarded - with precious copper and lead!"
D) "Call for the Archdruid! What do the omens of the Creator and voices of the spirits have to say about this?"

"How's the drink, besides a 'scam' and a 'swill'?"

"Uh, terrible, what else? Barely drinkable." Vanessa says, taking another sip. "Well, maybe I am too harsh, it's just a very nasty combination of sweet and sour. Next time I ask for something cheap, give me a straight shot instead of this! Got it?"

"Got it." Vanessa harrumps and then stretches her arms upwards. Then goes back to her drink.

"And how's the life here, barkeep? I mean, compared to me running along the Duchess, your life seems... stable. Easy. And you get to meet all the interesting people too, no?" She lifts the glass, sipping more of the mix you've gotten her.

A) "It's great, actually."
B) "Could be better, but I can't complain."
C) "Eehhhh..."
D) "Last days do not make me optimistic for my future here."
E) "It's terrible. It's either silence, or cheesy drama serie. Singular!"

You order solid metals to be sold for solid cash.

510 AD, End of the Year

What a tumultuous year this was - and you feel glad to be at the cusp of leaving it behind.

One more thing is to be done and that starts when the Advisor brings Scrolls of Kingdom Status for you.

Happiness: 5
Population: 3
Economy: 3
Army: 3

This is looking good, you tell yourself, smiling.

"As expected the timber and metals are quick to repair the financial situation of your Kingdom, your Majesty." The Advisor says, stroking his beard thoughtfully.

511 AD, Spring

Your guards arrive to mention that a delegation from the rivermouth Kingdom of Suisto has come to seek audience with you.

"Suisto?" Your ask the Advisor, who also seems a little surprised by the visit.

"I don't think even the Usurper bothered with them. Let's see, yes, they are far past Rycht, Ingar and even Murra. If my mind does not fool me, Suisto are peoples of the boat and the great waters, where fish, death and the long dark are aplenty. Rarely our people have come to do business with them."

A) "This makes me infinitely curious about their purpose in coming here. Let them in!"
B) "Fishermen from distant lands? Far beneath my notice, turn them away!"

418
You sternly tell Runa that her affection is not appropriate nor wanted, and the girl absconds a while later.

Just to be sure, you ask the servantmaster to find her a different job.

510 AD, Mid-Autumn

Your wife joins you in the audience chamber first time in the last four months. She doesn't say much, but her expression towards you have lessened, and the courtiers who were previously concerned about did notice.

510 AD, Winter

The arrival of the chests filled with copper crosses and spades, lead bars and strips, have made quite a commotion in the audience hall. The wealth of the mountains have finally arrived!

You life the heavy dark bars and the shiny, ruddy crosses, weighing them and checking their luster.

"My liege! My liege, a proposal!" The Treasurer leans towards you, his eyes sparkling.

"We ought to have artisans and craftsmen work the metals - then we can send them downriver to find buyers for even larger profits."

"This would be inadvisable, my liege, this early on in our work with the bounties of the earth." Says the Advisor. "It is an unproven ground, for our people were always people of the forest and river, not mountain and metal. Let us mint some coinage and sell the resources around so that the whole of the Kingdom becomes richer along the Treasury."

A) "Turn the metals into crafts and sell them abroad. The more money, the better!"
B) "Let us not make this supply of wealth unstable and unreliable. Sell the metals for a fair price!"

419
You quickly prepare her a Five Finger Discount, the resultant mix being pinkish and cherry amongst the heap of crushed ice. 'Vanessa' takes the glass and looks into it, then sniffs at it. After a brief moment, she fishes a small black credchip from a pocket of her combat suit, and lets you scan it. (+41c)

"And this costed me forty one credits?"

"Yep."

"A scam!"

"I recall that you've asked for something cheap. The end result is your own fault." Mayako quips before you can, not paying attention to Vanessa's death glare, and sips some more of her bitter synthol.

"Uh, whatever..." Vanessa looks morbidly into her glass, but does lift it up for another, smaller, sip.
