You decide to send a letter to the peoples of the southern coast, to convince them to turn away from the pagan beliefs.

The Archpriest splays his arms in defeat. "King Lycwl did the same! People here never listen." He leaves, shaking his head.

You order some wise and skilled courtiers to act as delegates and try to establish ties with the mermaids.

442 AEC, Late Spring

Quote

Your letter had little effect, your magistrates report! While few decided to abandon their beliefs, many simply ignored your words. After all, the peasants say, the Mother and the Father seem but a distant concept. Mermaids, on other way, are real things, and just now surfaced to show themselves to the faithful.

Your courtiers failed to establish ties with the mermaids. They've met with them few times, and all they earned was splashes of water on their faces. One unfortunate courtier drowned, having fell overboard when the mermaids rocked the boat that was carrying him and his two companions. Meanwhile, the attacks on the boats have intensified, and there have been casualties amongst the seamen trying to protect their hauls.

442 AEC, Summer

A report arrives on the Fai; hundred corpses, but fifty five peoples went missing. That both numbers scale up every season is beginning to worry some of your closest advisors.

The noblemen of Kastoria gather for a council, and you're summoned to it as well.

As you sit at the one end of teh table, the courtiers bow and takes seats in front of you, forming a half-circle.

"The council have gathered to address several things, Your Majesty." The Advisor explains, taking a seat between you and the noblemen.

"There are three things they wish to discuss with you and see them resolved in a matter that will best serve our state." He then lists the issues that people wish to solve today: mermaid worship in the southern cities, the increasing amount of disappearances in the north, and expansion into the northwestern plains.

You first decide to tackle...

A) The issue of increasing mermaid worship in the southern settlements and the mermaid activity in the seas.
B) The idea of expanding into sparsely populated, uncivilized lands between Maellia, Kastoria and Xane-Peon.
C) The continuing threat posed by the Fai and the increasing amount of disappearances related to them.

You decide to do something about this.

"I will make the palace the most elegant one. Tapestries will hang from the walls and sculptures will adorn the halls and courtyards." You promise your wife, and she rewards you with a deep kiss.

441 AEC, Late Winter

Wonderful news! The local censuses in the hamlets and settlements of Kastoria show a drastic rise in population since the plague, especially in the last year.

441 AEC, End of the Year

For the third time in your life, the Scrolls of Kingdom Status end up on your desk.

Happiness: 6
Population: 3
Economy: 4
Army: 5
*Navy: 5

Besides the last minute spending on hiring of artisans to decorate your Palace, there were no outstanding changes.

As long as these keep on this level, you can consider the situation to be quite good.

442 AEC, Spring

A new report from the north give you seventy six Fai dead, and eleven people missing, since the start of the previous season.

442 AEC, Mid-Spring

Mermaids!

Fishermen in the south report that merfolk were sighted in the waters in the last weeks. They complain that the beautiful maidens of the seas are bewitching unmarried youths and stealing captured fish from the fishermen boats.

You hear from the Archpriest of the Father about this, too.

"See, my liege! This is because the mermaid pagans were allowed leniency several decades ago. The mermaids were enticed from the depths by the prayers and offerings and are now back to cause mischief and trouble. For sure, there are pagans worshipping and offering to them even today. These must be dealt with also."

As for the mermaids themselves...

A) Send delegates to talk with the merfolk about leaving your seas alone.
B) Send the navy to hunt down the mermaids and teach them a lesson.
C) Hey, mermaids are cute, leave them alone!

As for mermaid worshippers...

A) Criminalize mermaid worship with fines and tongue-cutting, as with any heresy against the Father an the Mother.
B) Send a letter to the peoples of the south, imploring upon them to truly abandon their pagan beliefs.
C) Order a purge of the southern homesteads. One nation, one faith!
D) Leave them alone, their silly beliefs have no connection to this. You can't make things appear by believing in them!

You decide to spend some time with your wife.

After the pleasures of bedsheets are done with, she lays against you and strokes your cheek. Then you hear a sigh of exasperation.

"The palace is very dull, Amet." She whispers, and then looks at you. "There's no statues, no tapestries. All is rock and wood. Shouldn't the palace of the greatest of all kings be decorated lavishly?"

A) "All it needs is a lovely statue of you in the gardens, dear!"
B) "No, decorations are unnecessary expenses."
C) "I will gather the best clothiers and sculptors to liven up this place a little!"
D) "What, you want a brand new palace?"

The purchases were done, just in time for Shaelynn's group to notice that Captain Astleich appeared at the entrance to the 'shop court' and was looking around.

Presumably for them.

You decide to visit him and console him - and maybe apologize a tiny bit.

"It's still your fault, you know." He grumbles off after you finish the talk. "I think it's a bit paranoid to toss your Orcs after everything that gets near you."

"It's for my - and ours - safety! Also, you should've dedicated yourself to training and skirmishing with the squires, instead of risking your neck on such stupid stunts." Iakes huffs.

"Boring."

"Etiquette lessons, then, you need to work on your speeches-"

"Boring!"

"Read some history books then!"

"That's super boring!"

"And you are as well!" You snap at him in annoyance. There's awkward silence while you two stare at each other. Finally, Iakes shrugs.

"Well, fine, I forgive you." You two embrace in reconciliation. Hopefully, when his wife arrives, your brother's life will get a bit more exciting.

441 AEC, Late Autumn

A messenger arrives from Maellia; King Mael IV is grateful for the warning, and whilst nobody has gone missing nor any Fai have been seen yet, he shall devote extra soldiers for protection of his eastern border.

The healers always bring the worst news, and they do it again! Your son and heir, little Bitor, is down with the black fever! All pray for him to survive the next hours.

Quote

Alas, neither prayers nor healers can save him. He perishes, bleeding to death from his orifices and vomiting blood.

441 AEC, Winter

A report comes from the borders

Beautiful Ane of Gellaine arrives at the cour to marry Iakes!

She has a tanned complexion, short black hair and green eyes with a piercing gaze. She is very polite and chatty, and all seems well, until she sees her future husband, Iakes, sitting on a chair, unable to stand up. You and your father both note that she certainly doesn't like what she's seeing.

She still goes throuth the marriage, and proclaims her undying love and devotion to Iakes, but you can easily note that grimace of disgust on her face.

You don't think this will be a particularily happy marriage.

441 AEC, Midwinter

Boredom of Iakes seems to be contagious.

It's is heavily raining today, so there's nothing to do outside, and you have no audiences nor meetings schedules, so all you can do is gaze through the window.

What can you do to pass the time?

A) Read some tomes of lore in the palace's library.
B) Spend the afternoon with your wife. A heir is needed, after all.
C) Spend the afternoon with your brother, see how's he doing.
D) Go for a round of drinks and good food in the kitchen, finally some time alone.
E) Have a talk with your brother's wife, Ane, to help her get accustomed to Iakes' disability.

You move to the door and call the Orcs in.

Two of them run up to the window and grab at the being that is scaling the wall!

Quote

One of the Orcs manages to reach over and pull on the leg of the creature, causing it to fall!

Only when you hear a boyish scream you realize that it was probably a human. You run up to the window and look through it as the Orcs glare at the body below.

Noises go silent and you are unable to feel the wind blowing as you stare at the body of your brother Iakes.

441 AEC, Next day...

Quote

"How is Iakes?" You ask, but the healers shake their heads.

"Barely alive. He is asleep all the time, and his legs are alike sacks of sand, heavy and without life." Before your visit to the palatial infirmary, you did a little investigation on how did Iakes end up scaling the wall.

Turns out, he's been neglecting his studies as of late and slacking off. According to one of the maids and few guards on the patrol, he has taken upon the risky hobby of climbing walls and towers of the palace since at least last week.

Your brother is both foolish and lucky - he could've broken his neck like that.

441 AEC, Mid-Autumn

Your brother has awoken from his coma, and the healers have confirmed the worst - his legs are broken forever, making him a cripple for life.

He has been rather touchy for the past few days and the maids tending to him say he has been blaming you for the accident.

You decide to...

A) Leave him be, you weren't at fault in any way.
B) Console him and help him adjust to new life.

You decide not to involve Xane-Peonians. However, as the worst has been confirmed, a warning message will be sent to Maellians.

The courtiers murmur amongst themselves, but the plan is accepted.

441 AEC, Autumn

A report from the north arrives - seventy more Fai dead, ten extra people missing since last report.

By the afternoon, you busy yourself by reading a history tome about the Fai. Suddenly, you hear shuffling and scraping of something soft against the stones of the chamber. You look around, and realize that it is coming from vicinity of the window.

You snap the book close to produce a noise, and the scraping goes silent.

A) Approach the window.
B) Call the orcs in.
