You ask whether he could wait a day before you deliver the weapons.

"Hrm. If I find no one else until tomorrow, you can deliver the swords. I will not be waiting on you if I find more enthusiastic rider, though." The blacksmith looks at you and sighs.

"Three ducats if you go today." He says with a grimace, completely misunderstanding the delay.

440
"20 Barrels of Strongsugar we sell." The Purser nods and does a quick math.

"And ten thousand four hundred Ducats we earn." He says, scribbling in the Ledger.

(Just finished reading this from the beginning and thought to join in. Wonderful stuff, Haspen!)

Thanks!

Now go read all the Spamkingdoms too :P

"What's the bounty on the Commissar?"

"Two million."

"I assume standard credits."

"Correct assumption."

"What did she do?"

"Governess of a slave camp. Her line of defenses was 'only following orders'. Federation overlooks offenses of such Centaurians to ensure orbital prisons are not overcrowded with them. Doesn't stop families of camp victims to put a bounty. Now I pursue it. That is all." Mayako sips her fake brandy.

Arma in the meanwhile, has begun quietly snoring.

A) Gently wake up the Duchess.
B) "Are you a bounty hunter for long?"
C) CHATTY: "You obviously don't require human-like stuff to survive, but why synthol, then?"

You start asking random passerbies if they have any work to do. Many don't pay attention to you, few laugh, and others just shrug. It actually takes for the sun to begin setting towards the horizon when you find someone wishing to give you anything a worthy task. That's when you wind up my a small smithy, which seem to specialize in swords and daggers.

"You good with that horse, young sir?" The tall, thin, bearded blacksmith asks, putting away the knife he was polishing. He seems middle-aged, but working the furnace and anvil made his body suffer for it. "Cuz I have some newly forged swords I need delivered southwards. To the owner of an establishment called The Roadside Inn. He is a retired soldier and his inn is day away from Marienburg, so he needs protection. Neither of my apprentices can ride a horse, so I need a good rider from time to time. I offer a pair of ducats for your troubles."

Two ducats can get you a room and meals to last a day, but do you take this quest up, young Squire?

447
"Yes, I have a question about Blackspice." Accountant Marias scratches his chin thoughtfully.

"Hmmm... Blackspice... I don't think the local market has any. You would have better luck in Fedeira, given its a major trading hub. I'm pretty sure that there are big plantations of the spice in Palovilas and Nuova Lusia. That's all I know of it."

A) "Thank you. We must go to the market now."
B) "Also, could you spare some workers and craftsmen to help repair Santa Julia?"
C) "I also would like to talk about... (insert topic here)."

You thank the prospectors for their report.

509 AD, Midsummer

As almost every year prior, the timber sent west and down the river brings back money to the Treasury.

509 AD, Late Summer

Your wife Dugda gives birth to a child! And for the first time in your life, you have a daughter.

Dugda names her Heda, after her grandmother, who once ruled Rycht as a queen.

509 AD, Autumn

The last two weeks brought many thunderstorms and floodings of the farmlands around the Great River.

It would be cause for alarm and invite specter of famine, but your last year's decision to let people keep surplus foodstuffs has allowed them to now use the stored grain to combat the hunger.

"Your liege! Why haven't we begun mining of the ores?" Says the Treasurer at one meeting of your court. "We've had money before and we have money now, so why delay something that could bring us even more money in the coming years, perhaps we could've had it even before the end of this one, if we were fast in our decisions?"

A) "I still want more money in the Treasury before I commit to that! Financial security is important and you out of all the people show know that."
B) "I've decided we will be mining now."

You have a brief idea to go find the Golden Cup Inn, but first things first you might be able to meet Baron Thobing. Again you ask passerbies for help, and they kindly point you to the city hall. It is a two-story building not very dissimilar from townhouses around it.

Inside, there's a clerk, guarded by two guards with spears, their chainmails adorned with the all-too-common triple-lion emblem. The clerk is middle-aged man with reading glasses and a councillor's cap on his bald head.

"Hello there, child." He says, slightly amused as you approach his desk. "Can I help you?"

"I am Griff Let, here to meet with Baron Dux Thobing and present my offer of service to him." The middle-aged man looks at you from above his glasses, no longer amused.

"Do you have an appointment?" You shake your head. "A letter of recommendation, then?" You shake your head again and the middle-aged man sighs.

"Then know that Baron Thobing is too busy to just meet with anyone who steps inside from the streets. There's quite a lot of dignitaries and important personages wishing to meet with the Baron these days..." His voice trails off as he flips the pages of his book. "I believe he could find some precious moments for you two days from now on by the midday bell."

450
"To the Company Man!" The Purser leads you to the office of the Company that's located in middle of the harbor, just by the local Temple of the Goddess.

It is a small, two-story building made of brick and mortar.

The Purser enters first, and looks very confused at the occupant behind the desk - a middle-aged man, balding and with thin moustache, small glasses on his nose. He stopped in middle of writing something in a book, a drop of ink dangling on the tip of his quill.

"Yes? Greetings? May I help you, gentlemen?" The man asks with a raspy voice as the Purser looks cautiously around.

"This is Captain Scott Finley, and I'm Xavier d'Albaret, Purser. We've arrived with a ship, Santa Julia, just a while ago. We're looking for Lusitanian Company Man, Giuseppe Braccia?" The man behind the desk puts away his quill.

"Ah, I'm afraid you can't meet him. He has died of tropical fever two weeks ago. We've sent a dispatch to the Company Master in Lusia, but you..."

"No, we're not his replacements." The middle-aged man nods and hums.

"Well. I'm Alberto Marias, Braccia's accountant. I've taken over the affairs of the Company until the Company sends or nominates someone as replacement. Please, be seated." The Purser sighs and you both sit down.

"How can I help you?"

"We need information on the affairs of the colony, its needs, and whether there's any pirates or bad weather to avoid."

"Well, I'm not as well informed or connected as the late Braccia was, but I can fill you in on what I know. Of most importance, I think, to you, will be the fact that the local market keeper has gotten in a dispute with local tailors."

"Something serious?"

"I am not privy to details at this point, but if you have any textiles, I would suggest you check with some of the tailors and see how much they will charge you. The market keeper will surely try to buy as low as possible from you to gouge the clothiers afterwards. As for weather and pirates, the former has been calm, but last week there have been sightings of Palmster Brothers south of here."

"We know of them, they've attacked us two days ago."

"By the Goddess! You've managed to escape?"

"We were sailing together with a Zeelander ship, the Lion, under Captain Ernst Holders. Together we managed to inflict enough damage that the pirates turned away and left. Our ship is damaged and we've had some casualties."

"Ah, that explains a lot. Is there anything else you need?"

A) "Could you spare some craftsmen and workers to help with repairs?"
B) "No, that would be all."
C) "Yes, I have a question about... (insert topic here)"
