You decide to send a letter addressed to the rebels.

409 AEC, Mid-Autumn

Quote
8!*

You hear that once they've read their letter (in which you expressed not rage, but dissappointment, and a hope they will change their ways), they've killed their captain, delivered his head to neighbouring town, and begged for mercy.

Peasants and nobles alike loudly praise you for your skills - some even begin calling you "The Pacifier"!

Great news arrive from the prospector's site!

Malachite, in abundance, was found amongst the rocks and soil, along with some ores of silver and lead as well, exceeding the old prospector's expectations! Even now, the ores are dug out by cartloads, and the old miner became the manager of the mines.

Along with the news, he is asking for direction for where the mines should go.

First of all, it could be made into a gemstone mine, where malachite will be cut and processed into jewellry along with local silver. Such crafts could be sold around the Kingdom or outside of it.

Second option is to create metalworks. Copper and silver sells nicely at local markets, and its abundance could stimulate craftsmen and artisans to produce some works of art or statues to commemorate your rule and dynasty.

Thirdly, the ores, both raw and processed, could be sent to the Treasury. This will provide steady, yearly income, not affected by the capricious trade markets and whims of the populace.

A) Trade is the lifeblood of a nation! Our mastertful crafts will conquer the markets!
B) Metalworks is what we need, they're both useful and profitable!
C) The steadier the income, the better. Our Treasury needs income that is gems and silver bullion!

Omg it's the paint art guy, hi!

You decide to give the clergy of Mother and Father a tax exempt, written into the laws, so that nobody can take that priviledge away from them.

You also decide to divulge some of your powers amongst the high-standing courtiers, mostly some Counts and Dukes. They re-swear their fealty to you, and scribes gather to write down the laws and customs and priviledges and responsibilities of the landowners.

Congratulations! Kastoria evolves from Despotic to Feudal Monarchy!

From now on, more drastic choices as well as matters of foreign diplomacy (up to including wars and dynastic affairs) will have a chance to be veto'd by the noblemen. Not abiding by the veto might result in instability or revolts.

In case of economical or manpower troubles, you will have now an option to request money from the noblemen or call their military banners, providing much better outcomes than taxing/drafting peasants. Don't overuse these options, however, as it might (again) result in instability or revolts.

409 AEC, Spring

The Council of Nobles sends a large amount of cash into the Royal Treasury. The Treasurer rejoices, for the money sent alone will cover the tributes to Maestrimar and Kastoria till their expiration.

On top of that, the salt caravan from Xane-Peon results in some profits being earned by the Crown, too.

409 AEC, Summer

Tributes are sent to your victorious neighbours.

Reports come from the countryside and the cities; the clergy is preaching to the commonfolk that your victory was clearly a sign of Mother and Father seeing you as legitimate. Some people even began to praise your names, for delivering the simple folk from calamities of usurpation and oppression.

409 AEC, Autumn

Not all is fine and quaint in Kastoria, however!

The garrison at the Castle Dor have rebelled against your rule, and elected their captain, Digon Mentosa, as their leader. As the castle lies at the crossroads of several important routes in eastern Kastoria, its loss is of grave consequence.

A) Let's besiege the castle and teach the rebel garrison a bloody lesson!
B) How about I send a letter? Rebels love letters.
C) This is fine, no action is required!

Godfried pulled out something from the pockets of his pants - a small square pebble on a string, with small black rune etched on the stone.

"One of my 'friends' received this from an old man living in Tatalia, suffering from some deadly illness. He disclosed to my 'friend' that he was a friend of your aunt... Priscilla. Apparently, feeling that death is after him, he asked for her descendants - or family - to receive this... trinket." Godfried took Eloise's hand and placed the magical pebble in it.

"Now, I'm not entirely convinced that this is a true story, but, a gift is a gift, is it not? You might as well make use of it."

"We're going on a supply raid, yes. Consort's men are going to transport things to Lufin, and we will take their things for ourselves."

"You will all accompany him. And please, no bravado. Kill whom you must, take the supplies, and run back home." Meanwhile, Luitgard snuck closer to Cedric and quietly smooched his cheek.

"I will pray for your safety."

"...Thanks." Barely managing his skin tones from going red, Cedric rubbed his cheek and headed for the door, leading the way for others.

"Eloise, please wait a moment."

Deep in the forests of Lufin, inside an old fort, surrounded by tents of desperate and hopeful peoples...

Johannes looked at Cedric, then Godfried, and nodded.

"Arlight, then. I shall perform the sentry scout duties along with the rest. Goodbye, Godfried. Cedric." The brightly-colored man turned and left the room, while the elderly rebel leader looked after him. Cedric crossed his arms on the chest and hummed.

"Master Godfried, I don't think we should let Johannes perform such a mission. What if he-" A small angry foot kicked at the boy's ankle.

"Cedric! Have some more faith in the man." Godfried laughed.

"Sister Luitgard is right, you know? Just because he was part one of guards of the Consort himself, that doesn't mean he is a spy. In fact, some of the most loyal rebels are defectors from decadence, who once worked for the usurper himself." Cedric let out a grumpy huff.

"I'm sure we can trust Johannes, Cedric. Sigismund strike me down if I'm a bad judge of character." Cedric sighed.

"Alright, alright... he just... I don't know. I just don't like him."

Anyway - you've said I will be going on a supply raid? Haven't we had one last week?" It was Godfried's turn to sigh.

"Unfortunately, we're accruing people on steady basis as of late. While we have plenty of food, medicine and weapons and ammunition are scarce."

"We've heard that there will be a military convoy traveling from the south to the garrison at Lufin. Whatever they shall be carrying, we need it."

"Alright. Whom am I going with?"

"Eloise, Jorne Jarsson, Marion, Sylvianne, Orietta, Lucas, Markus Bridger and Marietta." The young prince looked at Luitgard.

"You're not coming with me- us?"

"Sadly, I'm staying here this time. Master Godfried doesn't want both of our healers to be absent from the camp..."

"It's for the best. I've already sent for the people I mentioned, they should be here shortly." The door to the old throne room opened, and Godfried nodded.

"Ah, there they are!"

//Eloise van der Boore, Jorne Jarsson, Marion Casier, Sylvianne Bismarck, Orietta Fiorina de Angeborta, Lucas Dreyfus, Markus Bridger and Marietta Lancaster are now active!

You decide to try some desperate measures, and sell out titles and priviledges to those willing to save the Kingdom from destruction.

The clergy seems astonished by your idea, but would be willing to donate money to the Treasury and placate the people with sermons and festivals, if you will give the clergy, their families and subordinates a tax exempt. You assume that this might mean some major losses to the taxation profits in the long run.

The nobility has heard you out and is immediately willing to donate money.
As a group, is that you form a legislative council of the most important peoples (Counts, and Dukes, if there will be any), who will be granted the ability to counter or veto your decisions if they deem them too dangerous for the stability and future of the country.
There's also Duke Circo, whose family wields considerable influence at the court and amongst merchants, and whose coffers are filled with profitable trade of luxuries and cloth between the coastal ports in the west and south. If you were to grant the Duke an autonomous territory within the Kingdom, he would support you personally.

The council of nobles and priests gathers, their eyes and ears ready to hear your judgement on their fair and profitable proposals...

As for tax exempt for the clergy...

A) No!
B) Alright, not a single coin from the clergy of Mother and Father shall be claimed as taxes from now on!

As for the divulging of monarch's power amongst his vassals...

A) No!
B) Okay, the King of Kastoria will now fall upon his nobles for support and judgement of his decrees and decisions!

As for granting House of Circo an autonomous duchy within Kastorian borders...

A) No!
B) Fine, Duke Circo's lands will be autonomous. May his name be praised by future generations for his loyalty and benevolence!

...As you ponder your options, you gaze upon the faces of the gathered. They're your loyal subjects - but in their eyes and expressions you see glee for your suffering and greed for power and priviledges.

These are vultures, if not worse. You suddenly realize that if you refuse all of their offers, they might become extremely dissatisfied, and the situation might become even more dire.

//Multiple vote, remember no split posts and so on.

4663
You postpone the decision till later, skillfully maneuvering yourself (and your arguing courtiers) from the topic.

You dread this moment. Every year so far wasn't better, if not even worse, than previous one. Situation's so bad even your chroniclers mix up dates and calendars.

How fares the Kingdom, you wonder. It was saved from one disaster, but what shall you do when next strikes next year? Next month? Next week? Will you be able to carry on, or shall you be swept by the forces greater than you?

All thoughts perish when the Advisor shows up with the Scrolls of Kingdom Status, placing them on your desk.

"The booty we acquired from manors and captives amongst Velason's supporters barely saved us from bankruptcy, my liege. We cannot keep the taxes up anymore, I've discussed this with the Treasurer already. The people are angry, the army thin, the Treasury nearly empty." The old man shakes his head in defeat.

"I do not know what to say this time." He says after a while.

A) "I have failed my kingdom and my people! I must go, and live out my shame in exile!
B) "This is fine. Everything's fine. Most importantly, I'm fine!"
C) "I ought to beg the loyal clergy and our noblemen to save the country. Priviledges, promotions, exemptions - they name it, they shall have it!"

You send the pagan worshippers a letter of threats!

408 AEC, Late Autumn

The grotesque beast has left! It has slithered away outside the borders of Kastoria, towards the plains dividing your country from Maelia. The scouts are keeping watch on its movements just in case.

Quote
4*

Your proclamation had an immediate effect, but not as strong one as your clergy hoped for. Many have renounced the mermaid worship, and the clerics re-baptised the converts, but rumors have it that some of the populace still keeps the salt figurines at home and does some fish bone divination when nobody's looking.

408 AEC, Winter

You rub your temples in annoyance as the courtiers argue out loud.

It all begun when the recent loss of your Queen was brought up at the table. Things have quickly escalated:

"The Mother will surely make a special dispensation for our King. He should remarry, to strengthen the dynasty and produce more children."

"Nay! To remarry would be a grave offense to the Mother! Our King has two children in line to the throne, and that is aplenty."

"Count Balazera, you preach of grave offenses to the gods, yet you yourself married your second wife last year!"

"That's a different thing! My first died young and I had no children to inherit my lands!"

"What you two are forgetting is that remarrying so fast would cause the soul of Queen Xmantha to come haunt us for this impiety!"

The courtiers argue, but as the discussion loses its strength, more and more of your courtiers glance at you. It is obvious that they're awaiting a proclamation from you on the matter of remarrying.

A) "I need more children to ensure prosperity and security of my house, and my country. I shall remarry one day!"
B) "Death of my beloved still occupies my mind and my heart. I can't answer such an important question so soon."
C) "As the vows stated, I shall remain faithful to my wife even after her passing. Nobody but Xmantha shall be called my wife!"
