"So I was meaning to ask, you know each other, that is a given, but whereas did you-"

"Roberto here was the first purser of Santa Julia, on the first two voyages. Then he got a promotion well worth his skills at management!"

"Ah, Xavier, you flatter me."

"Nonsense, Captain Lapeira personally vouched for you, and look, you did get the job!"

"That, and I bet, my uneasiness whenever we took to violent seas."

"Well, and that." The two share a laugh, and soon the door opens.

"Whereas this good mood coming from?" Says the First Mate, entering with the Navigator right behind him.

"Reminiscence, nostalgia for older times, my friend!"

"Always a good thing. Captain Finley! Here, our navigator." The Navigator nods.

"Captain, I have brought the map from your quarters."

"Ah, let me..." Roberto quickly pushes away some clutter at his desk, allowing Alberto to sprawl the map on it.

"The route the First Mate told me was, from here to Sebastias, then Copana, Guidea, Las Argentas, Pointas, Nuova Lusia, Aridias, and to Santa Maria, correct?"

"Aye."

"Well then-" The Navigator draws his finger across the map. "Assuming winds and sea on our side, to Sebastias five days, to Copana, at sidewinds, another five or six. Then alongside winds to Guidea, I wager we could be within two days, then to Las Argentas at least three, same to Pointas, then Nuova Lusia, and Aridias. We cut through Columbian Bay and with the winds, for six or seven days voyage."

"A whole month of thirty days." The Purser quips, having done the math.

"On ideal winds and calm waves, and given no pirates, accidents, storms, vile beasts or whatever other surprises the cranky old Ouronos might have in his underwater stores for us."

"Don't forget the return journey from there to Lusia - that's at the very least twenty days alone. But probably more."

"Just a scant some days to spare before the Charter expires its most beneficial of terms for the Company." You and others agree.

A) "We must waste no more time, then! To the markets!"

FLIRTY: "Oh dear, lovely ladies rarely come my way, especially in pairs~" The two look at you. Then, while 'Vanessa' has the look of someone wanting to murder you, her long-haired companion lets out a laugh.

"I like the way you speak, dear~" She leans in closer, laying her elbows on the counter and pressing her hands against her bust so it becomes more prominent.

"In fact, I am very happy to hear this from a handsome young man like you."

"I thought you wanted some synthol, not someone to sleep with?"

"I will gladly have both, you know." She looks you over and then smiles. "Well, how about some Blue Fire for me?" The mercenary girl crosses her arms and stares at you dispassionately.

You recall not being able to get Blue Fire recipe the last time someone requested it, but maybe this time...

4 Shots of Wóda
Shot of Buenberry

Serve in a tank glass with ice.

That's a simple one, all things considered. You pour some Wóda in a tank and add crushed ice, then some Buenberry. The drink quickly gains neon-blue coloration to it, and you pass it to the fashionable woman. She pulls a gold-and-red credchip from the pocket of her jacket, letting you scan it. (+51c)

C) CHATTY: "So what about you, I hope you're not going to stay disgruntled at me for no reason?"

//Sorry Egan I almost had the post done :P

You decide to go to the bar and prepare to mix drinks and hear life stories!

1236USY.8d/1m.0715h

A minute after "Ocean Eleven" docks, a pair of women passes the main gate-

BWAH! BWAH!

Quote
Alert! Unauthorized kinetic weapons detected on board of the station!

The speakers loudly inform you that one or both of them are armed. The blonde-haired woman in some sort of black apparel retreats back to the main corridor, and her companion, a head-taller in black dress and white top of sorts follows suit.

1236USY.8d/1m.0717h

The main gate opens and the duo enters, the blonde woman cautiously eyeing the gate for a brief moment.

As they make their way to the bar, you realize their features better.

The blonde woman is the younger of the two, a head-smaller than the other, and has short blonde hair barely reaching her neck. Her body is clad in skin-tight combat suit, replete with small pockets and holsters. While whatever kinetic weapons she had are gone, obviously, but you notice a reinforced baton at her left hip, an energy fork holstered at her other hip, and the handle of a combat knife attached to her left buttock. A combat scanner set loosely hangs around her neck, deactivated. She is ready for close quarters combat, as if a brawl was going to erupt at any moment.

The other has auburn hair, going past her shoulders, and is wearing a black dress with a white jacket over her arms. The dress has choice cuts of fabric that allow the woman to present her thick hips and deep cleavage to anyone looking, and you can't help but notice that her breasts are, well, huge. Compared to the other woman, she is obviously a passenger of sorts, but your thoughts briefly cross to the fact their ship is a cargo runner and not a passenger craft.

Is the mercenary girl over there keeping her companion in a cargo hold?

They sit at the counter.

"I still consider this SRC policy a dumb thing. Especially in this sector and in the current times." The blonde soldier girl speaks with an annoyed voice, slumping over the counter.

"You worry too much, Vanessa~" The well-dressed woman replies in a pleasant, soft voice, placing her hands on her lap.

"Are there any other patrons on board?"

"Uh, no."

"I believe its sole crewmember is asleep right now."

There's a long pause.

"Alright. Has there been any pirate or Centaurian activity around in Beta Carotenii in past 24 hours?"

"None that I know of."

"Hmph. Fine then. Seems safe to disembark. We will be coming for drinks."

You decide to do some stargazing - up the stairs and then up the ladder to weapon command cupola you go!

You sit down in the gunner's chair just as the Black Dragon fires its aft thrusters. Their exhausts quickly turn from dark blue through purple to bright blue, almost white, as the impulse thrusters start propeling the large Corvette away. Soon, the spiky, bulky shape turns into a brightly lit dot of exhaust, and soon enough, you have trouble tracing it in the background of other brightly lit points in the sky.

1236USY.8d/1m.0703h

You leisured stargazing is interrupted, after almost an hour, by beeping of the sensors console.

You leave the seat and go to the main level and then to the command room.

A ship is coming!

You go for some bartending trivia.

1236USY.8d/1m.0550h

You find a very interesting article about a drink called Five Finger Discount. It began when some bartender in year 1093 started handing out very precise mixes of cheap synthols to patrons who wanted something 'cheap' but couldn't be bothered (or were too drunk) to be more specific. The simplicity of the recipe and general usefulness of it meant that it quickly gained popularity amongst bartenders first at the Outposts on the same planet (Beta Aries IIa), then elsewhere, until it finally made its way into Mix Database of the SRC.

The Black Dragon of Angierach has cleared the docking slot and is headed for Madagascar Jump Gate.

B) Let's have some Zirconius now.

B, this is my first trip to the Karibs- have you any advice I wouldn't think to ask for?

The Purser and the Company Man look at each other briefly.

"Try to avoid buying goods that are out of season!"

"We will still make profits on most of Karib goods, but some of these cost almost three times as much as during their harvest seasons!"

A) "Thank you. We shall go to the markets now."
B) "Hm, but what about... (insert topic here)?"

You explain that you will meet with the Wildlings head-on!

The howling and screaming coming from northwest an hour later indicates that they've found you - and you've found them.

Quote
5*

The battle is a great chaos from the very start. Your archers tried to pelt the first line of Wildlings with arrows, only for them to raise primitive shields made of fur and leather, something they've not done before. Secondly, their mass was surpisingly orderly, for Wildlings, and they crashed into front of your lines nearly at the same moment.

But that was still not enough - your skillful ordering of troops and plain ol' large numbers of your troops was more than enough to overcome this and all other tricks.

Quote
9!*

While the initial few minutes were quite even, after that it is a slaughter. Wildlings fall down, cut down by your men's axes, maces and spears, and few that try to run away are easily shot down by your eagle-eyed archers.

Before the sun even begins to set, it is over. Amongst the dead Wildlings there's a bigger, nastier looking one with human skulls as his shoulder pauldrons and one of a wolf that served as his helmet.

As the Marshal explains that almost a hundred of your loyal soldiers won't be going home, while some three hundred and eighty Wildlings were killed, some warriors bring to you a gift.

The young-looking Wildlings, barely bearded and dressed in lesser furs, can't be more than youths, some perhaps as young as twelve, but you never know with the Wildlings. A fifth of the group is girls.

"We've captured twenty three Wildlings, sire." Says the blood-stained warrior who led the group of warriors that captured the youths.

"Whatever should be done with them?"

A) "These are kids, and they've received their lesson they will never forget. Release them back into the Wild!"
B) "Turn them into thralls, they shall till our fields with plows attached to their backs!"
C) "What stupid question is this? These are Wildlings! Put them to axe at once!"
D) "Time for something radical - they shall be clean-shaven and made into servants at my palace!"

You walk to the holographic display and try to get new chapter of Zirconius going.

1236USY.8d/1m.0517h

The date is 666 United Space Year. Android ChesterBeta-42 and Captain Zirconius enter the shady Black Harbor bar, and quickly realize that, while the ground level is full of 'decent' patrons, the balconies are full of punk-looking ones that are observing Zirconius' every move silently. One of the punks comes down and pushes at Zirconius, asking what a cop like him is doing in here. ChesterBeta-42 intervenes and soon the situation escaltes into full brawl. Busy getting bruised and knocking thugs about, Zirconius is pulled out by ChesterBeta-42 as the android has spotted Marga Trelis, their comms officer, escaping with a briefcase.
They give chase after her and into the Mud Sector, where most of the heavy machinery, maintenance bays and water reclamation systems are located. Zirconius, not much of a sprinter, soon is losing steam, so he orders the android to stop Officer Trelis by any means necessary. ChesterBeta-42 doesn't hesistate for even a moment before pulling his blaster and shooting at Trelis' right foot, cutting it away from the leg and causing the woman to tumble down, screaming. This allows the two pursuers to catch up with her, Zirconius clearly disturbed by Chester's cold blooded shooting. They try to interrogate Marga Trelis who just claims that she knows nothing. However, after some more prodding by Zirconius, Trelis finally decides to cooperate. Before she can say anything important, however, the briefcase she was carrying starts beeping and explodes, incinerating her, with Zirconius being pinned away from the explosion by Chester, who receives some blisters on his synthethic back.
Two days later, in his office, Zirconius mulls over the murder of his communications officer via exploding briefcase and potential perpetrators behind it. Out of any solid ideas, he returns to task at hand: finding a new comms officer. Heconsiders viable options, going through several dossiers full of ambitious 'just-out-of-Academy' recruits, before someone beeps his door, and he allows the stranger to enter. His face frowns when he recognizes the entering woman - Yarna Colins, his ex-fiancee. With a smug smile, she salutes him and tells him why she is here - she was appointed as Hyperion-3's new communications officer.

Thus ends Chapter 8.

A) One more chapter maybe?
B) Some bartending trivia maybe?
C) A little nap or stargazing maybe?

"Would we have time to start at Sebastias, and then do a circuit along the whole coast, through Copana, Guidea, Las Argentas, Pointas, Nuova Lucia, Aridias, and St. Maria?" The Purser, the First Mate, and the Company Man all hum and ponder and scratch their chins thoughtfully.

"Wish we brought the Navigator in here with us."

"Ah, from here to Sebastias if you do not anchor at Saint Marco you could be there in four days. To go to Copana you would experience winds both mild and sideways to your sails, so perhaps four days?"

"Going along the Karibs Proper all the way from Saint Alonso to Fedeira took us usually 10 days, but that's in near straight lane along the winds. What's the weather like along the Coast of Columbia, Roberto?"

"Ah, I wouldn't know, except that the winds are northwesternly for sure. The gulfs probably have small waves and weak winds. In fact, there's some pirates that have oar-driven ships to catch up with larger, but slower Ships."

"Let me get Alberto, Captain. He knows the maps and the winds, he can probably make a better estimate than any of us here." The First Mate leaves his seat and exits the office, while the Purser and the Company Man look at you.

A) "For now that is all, let us go to the markets now."
B) "I have another question, this time about... (insert topic here)"

551
"Blackspice, the places that should still have more of it, et cetera." Roberto sighs.

"Ah, Blackspice? Well you wouldn't find it much on the island, and in Southeast Karibs in general I am afraid to say! I am pretty sure that on the east side from Sebastias there are plantations only on the island of Guidea. The trade port of Copana might have some in its stores, but considering it is off-season, you might encounter it highly priced or not at all. Blackspice, Blackspice..." The big guy ponders for a moment.

"Well, there are plantations on Sebastias, plus its major trade hub for the region, so you ought to have much better luck here. I am also pretty sure that some ports on the Coast of Columbia have Blackspice plantations. For sure it is in Pointas, but I believe others should have it too. Nuova Lusia, a trade hub for Columbian trade for dyes, cloth and metals, ought to have it in its stores too. Considering few ships go this far west, it might be your best bet after Sebastias." Roberto lets out a hum.

"Whatever you need Blackspice for so long after its season times?" The First mate grins.

"The King himself wants five hundred Coffers of the stuff before end of the year. Our Captain here swore to bring it." Roberto gasps quietly.

"Five hundred Coffers is no small amount! I will pray on Solarday for your success."

A) "Thank you for your words, we will be on our way now!"
B) "Thank you, and do you know anything about... (insert topic here)?"

552
"A pleasant chat will do well to soothe my nerves about this journey! Lead me to the Company Man!"

You are lead to the Company Man, who lives in a small office down the dock.

"Greetings, Roberto." Says the First Mate, lifting his hat to the small, obese man sitting at the desk, who stands up.

"Ah, Luis! Xavier!" He quickly wades across the room. "Nice to meet you again after all these months." The man looks you up and down. "And this be whom?"

"This fine monsieur is our new Captain, Scott Finley, of Albion." The rotund Company Man quickly shakes your hand.

"Ah, pleasure, great pleasure to meet you, sir!"

"Pleasure's the same."

"Please, be seated." You three sit in front of Roberto's desk as he returns to his own chair which creaks most painfully under his weight.

"How can I help you?"

"We need information."

"Ah! Information..." Roberto tilts himself away on his chair, lacing his fingers on his vast waist. He hums quietly for a while, then leans forward again. "The seas are calm around here. Pirates have avoided our waters for the last few weeks, thanks Goddess for that! Sugarcane harvest has only recently begun but I'm told it's huge this Winter. Oh! And I've heard that some establishments on the island are searching for a supply of Fruitbrew for the new year's celebrations already. Do you have Fruitbrew on board your ship?"

"Not much, only few dozen barrels."

"Ah, but still - you might be able to sell each barrel few dozen Ducats more than on the Market if you ask around the place. There's quite a few taverns in the town, there ought be at least few who are still searching for the expensive vintage and are willing to pay the price."

A) "Thank you for your information, we shall be on our way!"
B) "Would you have any information about... (insert topic here)?"

553
"To Saint Alonso!"

By the sunrise of next morning, the anchor is lifted, the sails set, and the ship is away!

Quote from: Purser's Ledger
Wages:
2 Ducats per Sailor a Day for 149 Sailors over 14 Days from Capus to St.Alonso: 4.172 Ducats

Two weeks at the seas are very different from what you can experience in the closed seas of the Old World!

Sailors disembark except the unlucky few who have guard duty, to get fresh food and fresh drink and fresh entertainment in the taverns and whorehouses of Saint Alonso.

You, however, accompanied by the First Mate and the Purser, step out onto the wharf.

"I wish to conduct trading as fast as possible, Captain. We ought to visit the market keepers right away."

"We ought to speak with Company Man on the island first, Captain. He might have valuable information for us that could be used in negotiations."

A) "First we trade, then we talk about the voyage to come! Let's get to the markets!"
B) "A pleasant chat will do well to soothe my nerves about this journey! Lead me to the Company Man!"

554
"I see. Let's go to Capus!"

"Aye, sir!"

Soon the anchor is pulled up, the sails set, and the helsman leads Santa Julia out of the harbor, out of the Lusian Bay, and into the Atlantean Ocean. The first voyage of Captain Finley to the Karib Archipelago has begun!

7th Early Winter
Morning
South of Lusia

As the sailors lift up the body of the dead man off the hold's floor, others begin cleaning up the spilled grapedrink.

"What has happened here?" You ask as the First Mate and the Surgeon turn to you.

"Sailor Travera was crushed by a failling barrel." Says the Surgeon, shaking his head.

"Seems that the rope wrapped around the barrels on that shelf has snapped." The First Mate shows you the rope - its musty and green-tinted. "It's an old and rotting one, and I believe Travera himself was one of sailors in charge of securement of the ropes. Mayhaps it be he brought this fate upon himself. Unfortunately, the barrel cracked open when it crashed upon his head so the grapedrink stored within has spilled."

"Two hundred and eighty of Ducats gone, gentlemen." The Purser says from behind you, already scribbling in his ledger.

"Better that than the pricier stuff."

"Check the ropes and other bindings. We can't let this happen again."

"Already on it, Captain. The crew will check each and every one of them once we clear this mess up."

Later, it is found that this was the only rotting rope used for bindings, and all other cargo is completely secure.

Quote from: Purser's Ledger
Wages:
2 Ducats per Sailor a Day for 149 Sailors over 5 Days from Lusia to Capus: 1.490 Ducats

Some of the sailors disembark for the evening, while the First Mate and the Navigator come up to you.

"I spoke briefly with the Company Man on Capus. There was nothing in particular he had to report. Ships sailing from Garas haven't seen any Stygian boats or pirate Ships there. The seas in the region are currently calm and smooth, fishermen say."

"Captain, where shall we head next?"

A) "To Saint Alonso!"
B) "To Garas!"

555
"Is there any reason we wouldn't stop at Madus on the way to Capus?"

"Time, my good Captain. Bypassing Madus saves us up to two days with the usual winds."

A) "I see. Set sail to Madus!"
B) "I see. Let's go to Capus!"
