Few minutes later, the strategic operation screen switches to tactical, showing the satellite maps of the area and photographs of the seaside area adjacent to the city of Oshinawa.


The tactical screen shows the arrival of Maglev 1000 in the operation area, being cleared past a police barricade on the main road between the beach area and local suburbs.

The Maglev itself soon stops in the middle of a large, and totally vacated, parking lot. Soon enough the camera feeds inside the Pilots' cockpits come online as well.

As a group of Mu pings on the scanners starts to get closer, Thedros and Josephine are the closest to react.

A ping shows up, and he rises his head - staring directly at the cliffside at the western end of the sandy beach.

Thedros Palaikos: Hmm... Interesting. Ostfalk takes his mecha up to Thedros'.

Johann Eduard Ostfalk: What is it, Palaikos? You've got something?

Thedros Palaikos: I think so. Hey, Maglev?

Thedros Palaikos: Do the maps we've received have something about, say, natural cave systems around here?

Meanwhile, Josephine and Eva walk in opposite direction, scanners and radios active and ready.

After a solid minute, Thedros Palaikos finishes reading on the topography of the area.

Thedros Palaikos: Like I thought, there's some caves, but they're all high up, while the reading is way lower. Hey girls.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Yes?

Thedros Palaikos: I think there's something in the cliffs this way.

Josephine Fontainblanc: But the overturned boat is in the opposite direction.

Johann Eduard Ostfalk: I think it is safe to split, now. Us two can check the source and you two go search for the missing guys.

Meanwhile, both girls are wading with their Mecha through the shallows, approaching the upturned boat. They scan the area with searchlights, and Josephine swipes her light over a part of rocky beach - revealing a dark-red stain and mutilated, corroded corpse of a human.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Human? Eva's voice sounded like she was stating an obvious, not asking a question.

Josephine Fontainblanc: Yeah, right in front of my searchlight. Corroded. I will perform a bio-scan and send the data to the local Police Department, but I think we've found one of the missing guys.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Hopefully the second one is still alive. Josephine sighs sadly.

Josephine Fontainblanc: It's been hours since they've gone missing. But let's hope for the best.

Thedros Palaikos: Go for it. It appears right after Johann switches back to normal scanner mode - a big, singular node of Mu Particles right in the center of the overlapping cave map.

Johann scratches his chin.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: I've seen Mecha on documentaries dip themselves in water, so...

Operator #1: Command here. Model 995 is mostly waterpoof except for the life support's oxygen intake tubes at the top of the backs of your cockpits. You can seal these for approximately ten minutes before your oxygen runs out.

Meanwhile, Thedros has sealed his oxygen tubes, as noted by the display's yellow warning triangle, and dipped into the water to enter the submerged tunnel.

Suddenly, his camera feed's signal becomes snowy, soon cutting off, and the audio feed is replaced by crackling and noise.

Operator #2: We're losing direct connection with Palaikos' mecha, Commander.

Maia Sanders: Can you restore it?

Operator #2: No, doesn't seem like it. It might be the mineral ores interfering with radio transmissions. Any deeper and we will lose contact totally.

Josephine Fontainblanc: Watch out! It's just in time for Eva to move her Mecha out of the way, but the dodged monstrosity just turns on the spot and bursts out of the water - a five-meter long, thicc, misshapen eel of sort.

Josephine Fontainblanc: Eat it! Josephine starts shooting, Eva starts shooting, and the giant Mu is riddled with holes and burn marks. It shrieks as it trashes in the water and comes to a stop, its body washing towards the rocky beach.

The song - intermittent wailing, somber singing, vibrating sound, hidden inbetween the bursts of white noise and radio interference.

Then it stops.

Johann Eduard Ostfalk: It's gone now.

Operator #1: Confirmed, the auditory signal is no more.

Johann Eduard Ostfalk: Ah, Thedros is reporting he has shot the Mu dead and his Mu particle counter is going towards zero. He will emerge in a minute.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Johann, you alright?

Josephine Fontainblanc: We were listening in but we haven't heard anything on our side.

Johann Eduard Ostfalk: I... I think so, yeah. It was really weird. The wide channel is open.

Maglev: Maglev crew here. Great job. The background radiation subsided and we read zero Mu particle emissions in the entirety of the operation area. You did it, Pilots.

Eva Wilhelmina Langrisser: Yeah. He was going right at me. A little later and I think my VanZer would end up having some dents.

Johann Eduard Ostfalk: Hey Thedros, be honest, you haven't heard anything?

Thedros Palaikos: No! Well, I mean, there was this background noise of sorts, but I was focused on the Mu so I didn't pay it much attention.

The sky is dark, except some parts above the horizon, still twilight-blue, when the Maglev returns into SMC compound. Once the Roadtrain stops in its parking lot and turns off its roadlights, the ramp opens, and the four Mechas step outside.

The Pilots soon open up their cockpits and leave their VanZers one by one.

Maia Sanders: This has been a much better show compared to the previous operation. No damage, no wounds, no injuries. If only every operation went like this, Commander Shiek.

The four Pilots chit-chat about the operation before arranging themselves in a line. Thedros, Eva and Josephine seem happy and satisfied.

Maia Sanders: Commander Shiek, Subcommanders, we have a request for assistance from Oshinawa City Council. The situation is as follows:

At 1600 Hours today, several swimmers at Oshinawa Longbay Beach have reported bouts of bleeding both internal and external, and it was quickly determined they're suffering from low-level Corrosion effect. The beach was made off-limits shortly before some Mu Aliens were spotted pouring in from the nearby cliffside. Oshinawa City Police Department has no Mechas on hand and because the closest Dayamato Police unit able to respond is more than two hours away, therefore they've contacted SMC a few minutes ago to help resolve this situation. Oshinawa Council asks us to clear the beach from hostile lifeforms, determine the source of the low-level Corrosion radiation and also to find two young men who chartered a boat and failed to respond via radio. A drone fly-by discovered their boat up-turned by the cliffs of Oshinawa Longbay Beach but no human signatures near it.

Target area is within Dayamato Alliance territory and under hundred kilometers away from Neo-Amanotsugi, therefore its classified as Regional. Our Maglev 1000 is capable of reaching the site within forty minutes and has capacity of 4.

Maia Sanders: I need to note that soon it will be Night-time at the operation area, Commander. When the sun sets, our Pilots will have to rely on hardpoint searchlights, limiting their searching and spotting capabilities.
