Ah. I quite like our traditional form of government then. If I'm remembering right then animal sacrifice is accepted in Methiant so I'm wondering if Human sacrifice was ever a thing in Luathbas's ancient history or has it always been animals? Also what is the traditional view of slavery in the area? Also Also I know I've asked what other countries think of us in the past but I also want to know what our people think of the neighboring countries around us? Plus since we're loosely based on pre-Charlemagne Saxons [with some Celt vibes] do we have any laws/customs that are similar to old Germanic laws/customs like the Weregild?

No human sacrifice for Pantheon and it also views slavery as worst offense to gods. I dunno what's weregild is so it's not in Methiant either ;v

You send him a letter.

Two weeks later you receive a reply; he will be there for you come Winter.

Reports on sales of spices and Springwine arrive!

Profits from the Springwine were decent and steady.

Spices sold for similar amounts, greatly dissappointing your merchants.

Meanwhile, you receive a visit from a large group of dwarves. They're of various castes; some are bald and gaudily clad, some have unkept hair and clothes. Some wear tatoos and have this cold, spaced-out look in their eyes. Most of them however, stand behind a single dwarf, wearing black and gold, with a square hat adorned with tiny strands of gold chain.

"Greetings, Empress of Methiant. I, Urbath Megalazor, and these skilled beards, have come on behalf of High King Stomar Tumbaladob. As his father made our view about your land a bit less savage, now the King has decided to extend a knot of cooperation. What is important, he has heard of monetary wealth of this land, and he would be pleased to have Methiantese gold and silver in his treasuries. Here we are, to offer our geomantic, earthcrafter and artificial services to you and your court."

As for artifact-making...

A) Commission one.
B) Decline.

As for services of earthcrafters...

A) Hire some dwarven mages as guards and specialists.
B) Decline.

As for prospecting of soil...

A) Have the less populated lands prospected for ores.
C) Decline.

So we're more like the pre-medieval empires in governance.
Still, it's clear from recent comparison to the culture of the Damdamians that our hereditary landed nobility enjoy a great deal of privilege – be it without much power – or responsibilities – relative to the unlanded classes.

Yes, the noblemen or political persons do have priviledges, north from Methiant even more (is why they're so unwilling to give it up to administratively-bent governance).

How widespread are our research/educational institutions in the Empire? Do the Fireblood Court and House of Learning actively recruit/teach/study things all over, or are they just a couple of buildings in the capital where sufficiently interested wandering scholars sometimes apply for membership?

It's more like governmental institutions dedicated to national research. There are no public schools or universities in Methiant or anywhere near. Public schools are only in republican south. They do accept wandering scholars and pupils, but they mostly keep the study 'to Methiant and themselves' - they do not share fruits of research with commoners and definitely not with foreigners.

You sponsor another expedition, this time to the far west.

Once again, it is that time for the healers to break the news to you.

You're pregnant with Cyl's third child! Will it be a boy or a girl, you're not sure, but the medics are definitely sure that a child is inside you.

A) Let's keep it secret for once.
B) Another courier to Cydwyl Kingdom!

The engineers did as asked and installed the Microkit onto one of T1-RU1N's empty slots.

Hmm. What is the internal politics of Methiant looking like right now? Like besides the position of Monarch how do we organize the rest of the country's power structure? Are we still under a mostly feudal system? Do we appoint people to positions of power or is everything inherited? Do the Hurthlings have their own local Hurthling leaders who report to us or is it completely run under human/Methiantese management? How is Eval's chosen form of government going since they sworn vassalage under us?

Since time immemorial (as in before the old Luathbas), we're in some sort of Administrative Monarchy where officials have power over aristocracy, and the administrative structure was/is:

Monarch -> The Council (The Advisor, The Marshal, etc etc) -> City administrators/Province governors -> subject village elders & noblemen with holdings

Any nobility was tied to old dynasties and was barons and counts and dukes only because they owned some lands or had shiny titles bestowed upon them. If they do try to exert power its about feuds over a particular farmland or hunting area or a valley or such.

Actual Dukes are the only people with power and are vassal rulers of a Kingdom; in Duchy of Eval, it's Council of Princes/Families/they're not even sure themselves. It's a ruling council, and that's important.

Any true feudal systems with dukes, counts, barons with both political and territorial power was and is present only in the west and north. And since last century, Holy Damdamian Empire but we know how that one ended.

You decide to stay some more.

Nothing either exciting nor threatening happens, although Cyl seems to have more guards around and the noblemen seem to be avoiding you.

After nearly a month of this frivolous loitering in total, you bid Cyl a kissy farewell and return with your escorts and kids home, to Methiant.

1180 AD, Mid-Spring

The cartographic expedition has returned from the far south!

The men speak that they visited the Republic, Damedia, then skirted southwards through Ysirene, before entering the far southeastern duchies of the Empire, and then ventured into the kingdoms of Spania and Cadia. It seems that your royal grant of priviledge was quite helpful to the cartographers, especially in northern Republic and the religious land of Damedia; but the further they went south, the less questions were asked.

They've noted the high degree of freedom and mobility the lowest peasant class have; it seems they can leave their family homesteads on a whim, and even challenge noblemen and officials in the court, if their case is valid enough. One peasant family was met by the cartographers, the parents and their three kids were traversing from northern Republic to Cadia; all they had to do to leave was to notify their village governor that their house is now empty. A stark contrast with Methiant, Cyl and elsewhere, as here peasants cannot move unless they obtain a grant from the village elder or a nobleman.

For most part, Damdamian lands are comprised of gentle hills and vast flatlands, with rivers and streams cutting through them in great numbers. Strangely, Damdamians have little livestock - donkeys and mules, especially, weren't seen even once - and horses seem to be restricted for use of military and nobility. Forests were also sporadic; lots of them were on outskirts of vast farmlands - speaking of farmlands!

In the south, they had plenty of time to learn about the vast, fertile plains of wheat and barley and flax, which were stretching behind the horizon. Thousands upon thousands of bags of grain were shipped out of those lands in the times of harvest, to the marketplaces and homes of Damdamians elsewhere, the diet supplanted by bounty of saltwater seas; fish and clams and oysters, but also, urchins, seaweed, wavefruits (free-floating mushy apples carried around on the sea waves), citruses and coralmeat (an underwater plum, that one).

They speak that different people from different Damedian cliques still helped each other out with harvest and network, Scanian peasants being escorted about by Imperial soldiers and banners of Imperial duchies patterned on the merchants' wagons. Despite fragmentation, there's still a strong unity between the southerners, especially when it comes to religion and brotherhood.

However, the southern merchant princes of Spania became quite interested about the surplus in which Methiant has minerals, in particular Spanians where interested about gold. Further prying about made it obvious to your explorers that while far-southern Damdamian peoples have wide access to amazing variety and amount of foodstuffs and other delicacies, the southern shores are somewhat lacking in metals and jewels.

They also visited the slave markets of southern Damdamia; there, black elves (really, black-skinned elves with no hair), impoverished Damdamians and some exotic brides and pretty boys with tanned skin and red tatoots from some distant land called 'Moria' were sold for the highest bidder. The prices were absurd; some noblemen were offering as much as the slaves' weight in silver coin. The market is thriving, slave variety astounding, and indifference of common people to slaves' wellbeing more than obvious.

They had learned little about the distant lands beyond Damdamian shores, and even less about the 'thick, dark' forests on the other side of the sea from where the dark elves came. Apparently, the forest is called 'Anutuheatacull' or something like that, and they're ruled by king-priests, or priest-kings, and apparently they practice live sacrifices of their own subjects and slave duty is duty most sacred and respected - something something about self-harm was also mentioned.

The explorers from Cartography Charter even brought sketches of coats of arms of Spania, Cadia and that strange elven land of Anutuheatacull.

Your courtiers are greatly impressed by the scope and achievements of the cartographers. The lead explorer bends his knee and his fellows follow.

"My lady Empress, to bring geographic and cultural enlightenment for people of Methiant, as we were returning from the south, we were already discussing about going on another expedition before this year is over. During brief stay at the House of Learning, to leave information and map sketches for the map makers, our superiors and colleagues agreed that our voyages simply must not end with this one. Therefore we ask of you - please sponsor another expedition for Cartography Charter! We've reached a consensus that it's about time we gain knowledge about distant republics beyond Eldrican Kingdom."

A) "No, no, you had enough money given to you. Now shoo to your learning chambers!"
B) "Fine, distant west it is this time! Take the money and may God of Travelers bless you!"
C) "Fine, but I have a different idea for where you're going... (specify destination/direction)"

Kristoph Lurian Maria Eiseboum, a red cavalier.

Because there must be a counter for Elfy's green cavalier girl. The game's tradition dictates it!

that makes for a pretty shaky claim for the children of her second marriage.

Cyl and Doge both trace their roots to the original Cyl, though.

You decide to ask for nothing. Cyl looks both surprised and impressed.

"I see. Do you wish to stay with me a while longer?"

A) "It is better I return home."
B) "Yes, I will stay some more."

6538
You remain silent.

Then, in a brief scuffle, you see Erik Yerrinund draw up what looks like a very short Deathtube - and he points it at you! In this moment you should cover for protection, but fear reigns supreme and nails you to the chair.

The blast of the shot rings in your ears as you feel the timber of your seat explode above your left ear. The crazy nobleman missed by a wide mark, and only your nerves have been strained. Before you regain view of the situation, some noblemen and Cyl's guards have Erik on the ground and beating him up. Others are covering behind columns and guards, shouting at each other or staring at the whole situation pretty much shocked.

Cyl takes you away for safety as other audiences are cancelled.

In the afternoon, Cyl visits you in your guestchamber (which was guarded by two dozen soldiers), and gives you a hug.

"Erik Yerrinund will be executed with haste at tomorrow morning. This was attempted regicide. I apologize for putting you in danger. Anything I can do to appease you?"

A) "Death of Erik's family would be nice!"
B) "Nothing."
C) "A shiny trinket would do!"
D) "An oath of loyalty from your noblemen."

6539
You decide to attend the audiences.

It seems that a lot of noblemen have a lot to say about Cyl, his policies, and the policies of Cydwyl Kingdom. Nothing new, but you can't help but notice that, while charismatic, your husband is more compromising than assertive.

Finally, it comes to a situation when a nobleman - baron - named Erik Yerrinund speaks up about you.

"May I inquire, good king Cyl, why is Empress Ruberta here?" Silence befalls the throne room, as other noblemen, either shocked or attentive, listen to Erik.

"She is not Empress of Cydwyl! It's another encroachment upon Cydwyl and its way of living. She has no titles nor claims to any in Cydwyl. She shouldn't be here! What next, she will tell us how to adress you?"

"She is my wife, and therefore, can visit whenever she likes. She came to the throne room on my invitation." Yerrinund gives your husband a lazy eye, and you suspect that the nobleman might be a bit drunk.

Moments later, noblemen surround baron Yerrinund, half-shouting over him to try and tell him to leave, while your husband simply waits on his throne.

A) I should leave the audience room, its clear my presence isn't helping here.
B) How dare they question us like so? I shall adress those nobles and tell them what I think!
C) I'm sure Cyl has everything under control and will solve this situation. I will remain silent.

6540
You decide to sponsor the man, who is given enough money to hire his artists and singers.

Next week, with your kids in tow, you arrive at the Palace of Cydwyl. The celebrations are somewhat smaller compared to those in Methiant few years ago.

Nonetheless, you enjoy many parties with the noblemen and Cyl, who unfortunately busies himself with own nobles for most of the days. he rewards you by giving you his wholesome attention in the nighttime, however.

A week into your stay, Cyl announces that he will give audiences to those willing to speak to him. He offers to let you aprticipate, sitting at a throne near his.

A) Sure, the Cydwyllians should see the mother of their future Kings.
B) No, they're not my subjects, and my presence might only anger them.
