"Fine, you shall have the money!"

The mayors and elders sigh happily together and leave to make deals with the Treasurer.

504 AD, Summer

Treasurer's reports indicate a steady profit from sending timber downriver this year.

504 AD, Midsummer

Your wife is pregnant once more! According to the wise heads amongst your subjects, the child should come upon this world no later than Winter.

504 AD, Autumn

As the preparations draw close for the biggest festival of the year, even your castle seems to be brighter and more colorful than every other day.

Servants babble and chatter joyfully, handling supplies and things of your courtiers. The courtiers themselves seem to be very agreeing on many matters, and your meetings with them pass quickly and in happy atmosphere. And riding through the muddy streets of the capital, you cannot help but notice all the linen and furs on the backs of musicians and tricksters.

It feels...

A) That I should join the celebrations personally!
B) Very suspicious - back to the castle!

Game year must be 2210 or later, you must be at peace, you need to have Entertainers. Gestalts, Fanatic Purifiers and Oppressive Autocrats cannot get Manifestis.

"That is a fine proposal, I accept!"

The messenger bows and leaves immediately.

Then, you meet with the elders and mayors of down-river settlements.

"My liege!" Says the eldest and wrinklest-looking of them all. "For twenty years the Tyrant has oppressed our people and exploited our settlements most ruthlessly. We thought a new face on the throne would then help us restore our commerce and industries, but alas, all we hear is about herding mammos and cutting down lumber for raw selling!" His companions murmur and agree with him and each other.

"We thus wish to get money so that the worst affected cities could recover, so that our craftsmanship is adored by kingdoms down-river again!"

A) "I already gave to the people this year and Treasury is nearly empty, therefore, shoo."
B) "Fine, you shall have the money!"
C) "Funny thing, I was thinking the same lately - how about extra coinage and royal support in this matter?"

"The first part." Tyomas lets out a sigh.

"Sure. So this kid was born, what, twenty eight? Twenty nine? Years ago. You know, on a terraformed colony. Gamma Tauri, the one and only habitable rock in the system, orbiting this blue and yellow gas giant. You ever stay up late and climb the roof of your apartment block and you look up and there is this huge, colorful orb, staring down at you. That's the sight I grew up with. And the first time I was old enough to grab a shuttle 'up there', I did. I was amongst the stars." He takes a sip.

"But then I learned that not all is well amongst the stars. I've had access to merchants and their stories, to interstellar news reports, to rumors from spacefarers. About the Corp. The Centaurians. The Drones and the Droids. All this warfare and conflict and injustice. Down the planetside news are filtered and you don't really even see aliens or modders or even synths. Happy little paradise that wants to keep being happy little paradise away from everyone else, you know. But I went up and that feeling was gone. I felt I gotta do a thing, like, contribute to the space society at large. Obvious choice - join the militia. So I did." He puts the glass down.

"I was barely fifteen so I wasn't legally allowed to be a recruit, but they gave me a Plaster and a uniform. Gamma Tauri and few others were back then 'The Aries Alliance', before that folded into the New Federation. But anyway, I traveled the stars - the local stars of course - as militia boy, you know, fetching boxes, keeping Plasters clean, helping out local police garrisons or pacing behind important dignitaries. My parents were proud and I was happy that I could lend a hand. All fun. All fun." Tyomas takes a deep breath.

"So one day, alarms come blaring. It was the day when me and few others and our Sergeant were at Zabayone-3, an arcology station, and we were visiting local school, you know, to point out to kids how important and rewarding being a militia man is. After the alarms news came that Centaurians were attacking. The station had several compartments dedicated as shelters, so my group helped herd the pupils into one of those secure compartments. But Centaurians had Drillers. You know what a Driller is?"

"No idea." Tyomas lets out a huff and starts gesticulating.

"It's a missile, with a drill at the warhead. It doesn't explode on impact, no, on impact, the drill kicks in, for several seconds, and aided by the missile's thruster, it burrows through the station plating, deep into the hull, and explodes after a certain distance. The arcology had point defenses of course, nobody's stupid nowadays to go without weapons, but this Driller, this one damned missile was one of the few that got through the laser screen. It hit the station and burrowed straight into the compartment where... where we led the... where the kids..." Tyomas looks at the glass and takes another sip.

"And the bright boy who thought himself important and a hero, just, died, you know? All these boys and girls younger than me that I thought I can protect, all thirty of them, gone in an instant."

"It wasn't your fault."

"Of course it wasn't. It was Centaurians' fault. I was enraged, as you probably can imagine. After the doctors sprayed my bruises and cuts I went to my Sergeant and told him, I think I actually yelled at him, that I want to join the Aries Defense Forces. 'Why?' He asked, surprised because I seemed content with where I was before, and I looked him in the eye and I said 'I want to kill all the Centaurians.' I'm not sure if he approved or not, I don't remember exactly that entire moment, but I remember what I said to him. So he took me to the recruitment office and I joined the Force. Sixteen years old, I put on plasteel boots and kinetic armor first time ever and got a real laser rifle."

1236USY.7d/1m.2250h

Tyomas tilts the glass and downs the remainder of the drink.

"And I started on my little quest. Killing all the Centaurians. Boarding actions, station defense, I even flew a Myrmidon few times to shoot down Centaurian fighters."

"That's the part two of your bad life?" Tyomas grimaces.

"No. Part two is few years into the whole of this crusading I was doing." He puts down the glass when your sensors console beeps.

Could it be - another incoming ship?

A) Excuse yourself to check the sensors.
B) "I wanna hear part two then."
C) "I think I've heard enough, sorry."

You decide to meet with the messenger first.

He enters, wearing a fur coat and a wolf-hat, customary to his people. He kneels before you and extends his right hand forward in a greeting.

"King Cyrus, my lord and master, most veritable King Osfin of Ulko of the Seas, has recently been blessed by extension of his already robust family by the way of a daughter, his first and only so far. He has heard of your exploits as tyrant-breaker and also of the fact that your wife has given birth to a son recently. Although your and his domains might be separated by many months and many lands, he has sent me forth to ascertain whether you would be interested in offer of marriage between your son and his daughter, Princess Gitrud."

A) "I have no need for marriage with faraway lands, so be gone!"
B) "That is a fine proposal, I accept!"
C) "This feels a bit hasty. Tell you what, I am willing to reconsider this proposal in five years, when and if both children survive through their infancy!"

667
You decide to sponsor some festivals and feasts.

504 AD, Spring

On a particularily warm day of early Spring, the guards bring news.

"My liege, you have a diplomat from the distant kingdom of Ulko, wishing to present you a proposal from his king. There's also some mayors and village elders from down-river fishing hamlets and port cities, asking for audience."

A) "Let in the foreigner first!"
B) "Let my people in first!"

"Sure." Tyomas smiles a little bit, then taps away at the glass, then takes a quick sip of his Nightrun.

"Which part?"

"There are several?"

"Yeah." He puts the glass down. "The first part, about a bright boy with big ideas. The middle part, about a soldier who realized something about himself. And the last part, about a bitter veteran who's got nothing left to do but fetch cargo from place to place to make a living."

A) "The first part."
B) "The middle one."
C) "Go right for the end."
D) "Actually, this is going places I am not comfortable with yet. Apologies."

You decide to browse the Net in hopes of finding a good article before sleep.

[SLEEP PERIOD HAS BEGUN. SEEK A PREFERABLY COMFORTABLE PLACE TO SLUMBER UNTIL 0215 TOMORROW. NEGLIGENCE TO THIS MIGHT CAUSE YOUR ORGANIC COMPONENTS TO BECOME INEFFICIENT.]

Your wetware chip notifies you just as you finish reading an article about SRC bartending monopoly that it got from New Federation. It is a 'reward' for providing newly revived Federal Marines and Federal Starfleet with both fuel and cheap synthol during the twenty-five years of war against EXO-Lumina and its corporate allies, as well as other 'enemy' polities like People's Republic of Centauria and Serpentis Regime. Apparently, Federal government officials and high-ranking military officials have substantial discounts on SRC synthol and Drink Mixes, too.

You've hoped to find any recipe but there's none.

Oh well!

You turn off the music, dim the lights, and pace off to the slumber pod to get six hours of rest.

As its door closes behind it, you close your eyes even before the aerosols put your brain into sleepy loops.

1236USY.7d/1m.2241h

BEEEEP!
BEEEEEEEP!

You wake up and interrupt the sleep cycle in the pod when the bar alarm rings on the console above your eyes. Someone is requesting your presence at the counter.

You quickly put on your jumpsuit and shuffle off to the bar.

You step behind it and give Tyomas a glance - he is looking as mopey and as sad as he ever was. With obvious addition of a mid-hangover grimace.

"Nighrun." He smacks his lips and pulls out his credchip before you even start pouring the mix.

You add the clear and red and purple synthols, not paying attention to the colorful effect at the bottom of the glass. Neither does Tyomas - he just wants his drinks and he has credits to pay for them. (+126c)

He takes a long swig of the mix, emptying almost half of the glass.

"Sorry for being a grump before." He mumbles quietly, placing the glass on the counter and rolling it between his fingers.

"It wasn't that bad."

"Oh, trust me, I know what kinda eyesore I can be." With a sigh, he takes the glass, looks into it, and puts it down.

"So, you wanna hear it?"

"Hear what?"

"About my bad life?" He looks away from the glass and at you with an unsure smile. "My wetware chip tells me with all the warning messages that I'm sufficiently sloshed to pour my heart over to random barkeep who wants to listen."

A) "Sure."
B) "I've changed my mind - plus it's middle of my sleeping period."

"Please come again." Vincent chuckles, and leaves his seat.

"Ah, if you're selling me drinks and then saying goodbyes right afterwards, I might actually do the opposite." With a grin, he turns to his crew and rubs his gloved hands.

"Alright boys and girls, let's move it!" He walks behind his crew, herding it towards the main gate.

It opens, they leave, it closes.
