You struggle for your life!

Quote
4

You twist your body to get rid of Bjern, but he quickly counters and raises his knife at you. Fortunately you manage to dodge the blow and then wrestle with him for the knife.

"WOMAN! I WILL MAKE METHIANT GREAT AGAIN! DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!?"

"You're mad, Bjern! Please calm down!"

You two fight for the knife and Bjern at one moment unceremoniously slams you against nearby tree. You repay him by elbowing his gonads and then his face. Then he grabs you by the throat for a brief moment, but fails to deliver a stab with the knife as you twist your body again. You hear little Rinilda sobbing in terror somewhere to your right.

In the heat of battle, you finally grab hold of the blade and strike; the knife sinks deep under Bjern's jaw. To your terror and disbelief, your beloved Emperor falls to the ground, gurgling on his blood and clawing on the blade. The darkness masks the color of blood that slowly paints Bjern's neck and shirt red.

Soon, the guards and palace staff catches up with the scene...

1172 AD, Midwinter

"The Council gathers today to elect the new Emperor or Empress of Methiant." The Advisor sits down at the pedestal and looks at gathered nobles, officers, officials and dignitaries.

"What happened to the book found under Emperor's robes?" The royal scholar stands up.

"It was a book of some heretical, mystical worship or some such. Such a piece of vile literature could find no resting place other than a fireplace. It has been destroyed." The Advisor nods.

"We must also comment on Empress' deed. She fought bravely and dealt with Emperor Bjern, who seemingly fell into madness. Who knows what could become of us and Methiant if she failed in her noble combat." The Advisor lifts the cast iron ball and slams it three times against the pedestal.

"Now we decide. Do we honor Emperor Bjern's default choice of his daughter Rinilda, with her mother as Empress-Regent, or do we elect someone else? Remember, everyone with dynastic ties-" The Advisor glares at murmuring, scheming, borderlands-dwelling noblemen. "-is viable for the throne."

The council decides to...

A) Go with default choice and choose Rinilda as future Empress of Methiant, with her mother Ruberta as Empress-Regent.
B Make Empress-Consort Ruberta a true Empress of her own right.
C) Appoint Princess Eiri as Empress of Methiant.
D) Appoint Prince Hein as Emperor of Methiant.
E) Choose Princess Graine as future Empress of Methiant, with her mother Bjeda as Empress-Regent.
F) Choose Prince Deathan as future Emperor of Methiant, with his mother Bjeda as Empress-Regent.
G) Appoint Llewyn, son of King Erik of Cydwyl and Lady Alissa of Methiant as Emperor.
H) Appoint Tollin, son of King Erik of Cydwyl and Lady Alissa of Methiant as Emperor.
I) Choose Aron, son of King Erik of Cydwyl, as future Emperor, with his mother Alissa of Methiant as Empress-Regent.
J) Appoint Lady Alissa, daughter of Harthaen and Tulla, as Empress.

Otherwise, the court can look outside Methiant and invite...

L) King Estjald of Cydwyl, son of Eirika and King Cidric of Cydwyl, to become Emperor of Methiant.
M) Princess Odiana of Cydwyl, daughter of Eirika and King Cidric of Cydwyl, to become Empress of Methiant.
N) Prince Cyl of Cydwyl, son of Eirika and King Cidric of Cydwyl, to become Emperor of Methiant.

~~Room 0001~~

This nondescript rectagular room is, well, pretty nondescript. In the northwestern corner, a staircase leads downwards.

An old, slightly battered, but sealed crate stands under the eastern wall.

Tricky Ricky detects no traps within this room.

Of course I add joke option, it wins 'v.

I should work on my willpower these days...

You pull out Mister Blackfur and prepare to throw him at Bjern's face.

Unfortunately, the chickpea-filled doll strikes a branch above you. The branch has more staying power than you, and due to inertia (or maybe your lack of fighting skill), you manage to yank yourself backwards and fall onto the ground with a loud thud.

You quickly stand up, only for someone to grab you from behind and pull a knife to your throat. It's your dearest husband, Bjern! How did he get to you so fast and so quietly!?

He is whispering something onimously, something about Methiant and Glory, but what preoccupies you more is the feeling of the cold steel at your neck...

A) Struggle!
B) Don't struggle.

You take Ruadh with you.

Few minutes later, some guards follow you out of the kitchen - neither Bjern nor Rinilda were there.

And few minutes after that, almost entire castle is on its feet.

As the darkness goes deeper in the night, you find yourself in the royal forest. The entire castle has been checked, even after one of gate guards reported that the Emperor demanded to be let out along with Rinilda.

You make your way between the trees, tripping over the roots several times. Is it motherly instinct that guides you into the woods? Or mayhaps something stranger is at the work here?

Just then, you see a flicker of light. Between the trees, amongst some tall and flat rocks. You remember this place; this is an old Pantheonist altar that Bjern once talked about.

And indeed, soon the candlelight passes close enough to the man's face to assure you it is your husband. And the kid sitting on the stone, no doubt it is little Rinilda. What is he doing here? Since when does he perform rituals? Why all this secrecy, too?

You have a bad feeling about this.

You sneak closer, almost wanting to shout out to your husband, on other hand, you dare not to. You're just behind the last tree before the glade with the altar, when you see a white glint of metal in Bjern's hand! Is that a knife!?

A) I must stop him!!
B) What is he doing??

Soon, but not now! You're a busy man after all.

1172 AD, Winter

Gems, as well as parts of gold and silver arrive in your Treasury.

Quote
4

The glasswares sold for some coin, but its quality has been praises by noblemen and merchants alike.

A cold winter night like any other, you hold your little Rinilda up, playing with her as she squeals and laughs with you. It is bedtime, and no moon is outside. It would be scary and dark night, but in your arms, Rinilda feels perfectly safe from monsters living under her bed. Still, you're sure Ruberta will be angry at you two for staying up this long, but ain't Rinilda your most precious thing?

You hold her up and then put her down, and then up again, before you realize.

Quote
Tails

"You're the most precious, yes."

"Daddy?"

"Shush, dearest. I will show you something outside the palace. Come now!"

You pick Rinilda up and quietly leave the chambers, your daughter clutching her beloved doll in her hands. The place you're heading for is ready, prepared by you weeks ago; an old altar, nowadays unused by Pantheonists, and conveniently localized in the royal forest north of the palace.

Yes, that will be the place... this will be the night...

*KZZZZZZTTTT*

You're Empress-Consort Ruberta. It is time to sleep. The matron is dismissed after you two knit another pair of socks for little Rinilda. You can finish your needlework tomorrow.

You check the royal bedroom, but of course Bjern isn't here. You shake your head. Lately he spends whole evenings in the library like some bookworm. That, or maybe he is playing with Rinilda. Again! Does he not understand the little girl needs to sleep, or the giants will come and make her short forever?

But then you enter her bedroom, and notice that the bed is prepared but empty. The straw doll, Rinilda's favorite, is missing. You walk out of the bedroom and grab Ruadh, the bedservant of your husband, by the arm.

"Ruadh? Where's my husband? And Rinilda?"

"I think I saw him take lil' princess somewhere. Uh, towards the kitchens I think?"

A) "A meal this late at night and right before bed? This is strange. Come, help me find these two, Ruadh."
B) "A snack before bed? Hmph. Ruadh, when they come back, tell them to see me at once."

You send a letter, asking for calm and reason.

Quote
6

You did it! The letter made the warring faiths reconsider their actions and finally they decided to lay down their weapons. Of course leaders of the rioting parties had to be dealt with, but you stopped much larger bloodspill! Everyone praises your name and thinks better of your office; Pantheonists for bringing peace to your subjects, your subjects for defense of Pantheonism against foreign faith.

1172 AD, Late Autumn

You enter the unused bedroom and open up the locked coffer.

You pick up the book and caress it gently. You cannot sleep well because your dreams are filled with visions of this book, visions of glory and visions of power. You feel like postponing this is pointless. The book knows your destiny, and you know yours.

Quote
Heads

Though your humanity, hidden under veil of uncertainty, still grips at the edge of your mind, as if desperately trying to stall the book's use.

A) Just few more months, I promise.
B) Indeed. The time has come.
