You decide not to get involved in the far west.

1140 AD, Mid-Autumn

You become grandfather twice more; within six days apart, both Estrid and Abis give birth; Estrid gives Houlandin a healthy boy she named 'Llynden', and Abis has another daughter that is named 'Dana'.

1140 AD, Winter

Gold and gemstones arrive in the Treasury, while silver is once more sent to the dwarves.

Once again, metals provide little profits; the glasswares fares better.

1140 AD, Midwinter

You're informed by your generals and clerks that the recruitment offices have been smoothly integrated into royal bureaucracy as well as military organization of Methiant. First recruiters have already disseminated amongst the lands of the Empire, offering honest soldiering work and a new place to call home for those unlucky, homeless, of mercenary inclination or otherwise interested in serving the Methiantese nation.

1140, Late Winter

The magnificent Royal Keep of Ceremonies has been opened in a grandiose ceremony. Many noblemen attend it, if only to get drunk and mingle with each other.

All important religious and celebratory events will now take place in it, possibly dazing your subjects, guests and courtiers alike with the splendor of the carved marble and glass decorations inside.

1140, End of the Year

Just as you finished the morning meal, the Advisor seizes the opportunity to present you freshly updated Scrolls of Kingdom Status.

"My liege, while the recruiters had great luck in gathering new recruits from across Methiant, the Treasury is in bad shape. The people are grumbling in disapproval and some groups of malcontent are even publicly expressing their anger with your rule. But it is the money that's our current pressing issue; the tribute to Dwarves takes away a good chunk of our income, and our Army, bureaucracy and Fireblood Court are expensive to maintain. We ought to do something." The Advisor explains several (more or less obvious) ideas your ministers and officials have.

As for Army budget...

A) Lower the assigned budget to previous amount and cut its spendng for a year.
B) Lower the assigned budget to previous amount.
C) Cut its spendng for a year.
D) Do nothing, Army is backbone of our society and must be well-oiled all the time!

As for potential increase of taxes...

A) For a year, we have to or we go bankrupt!
B) No, let's not anger the peasants even more.

"The Authority is at all time low, my liege. But mayhaps another edict could raise it? Therefore, I shall ask: do you wish to issue an Edict this year?"

A) "Of course, bureaucracy is love!"
B) "Not this year, sorry."

You decide to accept ownership of northern Donuth as your reward for helping Cidric regain his throne.

Along with the diplomats, your daughter Eirika and her kids return to Cydwyl, her family now reunited.

1140 AD, Midsummer

The ownership documents arrive in the capital, and soon initial survey arrives a well; the land is moderately populated and of no significant wealth or natural resources.

1140 AD, Autumn

Potentially worrying news come from the west; Kingdom of Eldrican is under assault by horse nomads. But it is not a single tribe this time - apparently a new Khan has united the three tribes, Otvags, Tsibiri and Chukan! His name is Ogan, son of Ajtun, from Tsibiri tribe.

Your courtiers bring more rumors about the nomads every day; their invasion apparently progressed deep into Tirine territory, pillaging, enslaving and burning down what the nomads can find, beating up local militias and Eldrican forces alike. Ogan has promised the tribes glory and power that they once had under the Atulak Khanate and those before it, to once more become the lords of western steppes. Apparently, his highly mobile army numbers up to twenty, thirty, and some even say forty, thousand horsemen dedicated to war and destruction.

A) Ha, serves them Eldricans right.
B) Maaaybe Daric would appreciate an offer of help?

Just out of curiousity, what effect did modernizing the Hurling land have?

Bring back their agricultural expertise after decades/centuries of being xenophobic traumatized aggressive uncoordinated little peoples.

You agree to let them take the money as payment for Alldivine mercenaries.

1140 AD, Mid-Spring

Cidric did it! All the rebel forces have been exterminated or subjugated. Many thousands have perished, but word has it Cidric has gained control of copper and tin works in the mountains across from Tiftit valley.

1140 AD, Summer

A delegation of Cydwyllian diplomats arrives. They heap praise at you because your agents were coordinating with Cidric's agents in last few months.

"King Cidric offers to send you money he has seized from the manors of his uncles. Otherwise, he would be happy to deliver upon you the northern Donuth, so that you would be ruling over both halves, again uniting them since the time our respective nations split the land between themselves."

You decide to...

A) Accept the money, hard cash always finds some use.
B) Accept the land of northern Donuth.
C) Make puppy eyes and ask for both, pwetty pweeeease?

You decide to Establish Recruitment Offices.

1140 AD, Spring

Quote
5to6

It seems that people decided that your edict was reasonable, as there has been no initial objections to it. Time will tell if it will get implemented swiftly enough.

You also hear great news from the north; out of seven uncles, six rebelled, and now four are dead. The last bastions of rebels in Cydwyl Kingdom are in lands that once were Donuthian, where the holdings of uncles Stjolf and Ansgath lie.

There is delegation of Alldivine priests that ask for an audience.

"The Cloisterbrothers have decided that is it a good year to ask for the payment for services rendered with flesh and blood by our warriorpriests for your Army, Emperor!" Says one.

"But because you have been a friend to our faith, they have decided to ask for only a small tribute equal to about half what was initially calculated."

A) "I have more important things to spend money on. Begone at once!"
B) "Generosity of your Battlebrothers is most welcome. You can take the money."

Increasing Army budget increases the maximum the Army can support at once and in good shape ;v

MILITARY EDICTS:

Matters of military hierarchy, philosophy of war and development of military tech.

Issue the Codex of Training Regimen:
A set of efficient (and slightly draconian) requirements and practices of training to ensure that the Army gets only the best recruits of them all. This will make the Army much better in combat, although there might be a problem to fill yearly recruitment quotas sometimes.

Establish the Shadowranks:
Politics often involve underhanded tactics. A castle full of commoner staff and visiting foreigners just asks for a disaster to occur. Let's have the military form a professional division of most loyal of soldiers, who would protect the Emperor, his family and important state officials, during the day, night, war, peace, revelries of festivals and monotony of daily life.

Establish Recruitment Offices:
Mandatory training for youths is a good thing, but after bloodier-than-usual wars, there might be shortage of men to replenish the ranks. If we were to expand on the royal bureaucracy to include offices for traveling civilian recruiters and offer citizenship grants for mercenaries and travelers looking for a new home, our Army could refill its ranks much faster.

BUREAUCRATIC EDICTS:

Matters of administration and government.

Establish The Council of Statesmen:
Creation of a small council of governmental officials who will be tasked with helping the government run smoother alongside traditional advisors, and, of course, the monarch himself. This will help strengthen the Imperial Authority, even in dire times, and help pass edicts quicker, although giving even more political power away from the throne than in the past might become a source of troubles one day.

Expand Primogeniture Law:
A string of bad luck can render a monarch without a male heir or cause succession debates. Rather than risk some unpleasant consequences of such a situation, it might be better to allow a skilled female to ascend to the throne, especially if she is as good at matters of the governance as any other ruler.

Establish Passage Tax:
All those travelers, adventurers, merchants and others are moving through the country for free! Let's establish a tax for those entering and leaving our country - this will earn us nice profits each year, although it might slow down immigration and convince some merchants to seek passage through elsewhere.

CULTURAL EDICTS:

Matters of religion, culture and art.

Establish Calendar of Festivities:
Rather than throw a festival every few years to celebrate a bontiful harvest, let's instead establish a cyclic and stable calendar of state-sponsored festivities for the whole year. This will cause a drain on the Treasury, but hey - people love festivals!

REVOKE EDICT: Revokes a previously implemented edict, either to cut spending, appease some disgruntled subjects, or both. On the other hand, it might tick off some other peoples, potentially causing a deadly cascade of discontent.

Late Spring, 1135 AD: Established the Fireblood Court:
Creation of a specialized military branch devoted purely to development of Fireblood arms to ensure they are aplenty and of best designs around. This will allow to centralize the production, research and budgeting of Fireblood weaponry rather than having some errant alchemists and engineers running around, trying to make things happen.

End of Year 1135 AD: Proclaimed Religious Equality:
Travelers, merchants, immigrants; they all bring new beliefs and philosophies into the country. Rather than fight those foreign influences, it might be best to allow all peoples free worship on equal level no matter the size and beliefs of the congregation, to help all different worshippers achieve a certain degree to harmony and peace.

You hire some adventurers to go and slay Queen Roca.

They do so. Her lieutenants fall to in-fighting, and the local militias have no problem hunting down bandits afterwards.

1139 AD, Winter

Gold, silver and gemstones fill the treasury, and money is sent to Ankurvat.

While metals yield little profits, glassware does well for some money. Most importantly, it seems to help people's forget the terribleness of the last year, soothing their souls.

Apparently, two of Cidric's uncles went to blows after some scandalous documents about one of them ended in the desk of the other. If those mishaps continue, Cidric - who's currently besieging the capital - will soon have a clear path to victory.

1139 AD, End of the Year

You silently brood in your chamber, staring at the snowfall outside; the small, delicate snowflakes are gently falling to the ground, the stillness and quiet of the outside world being rather lovely.

You hear the door creak, and you turn your head; the Advisor bows respectfully and brings you the Scrolls of Kingdom Status.

Happiness: 4
Population: 7

Army: 1
Imp.Authority: -1

"Sire, the recent war had unfortunate distinction of causing many casualties, be it the lost youths or enslaved or slaughtered peoples, especially in the northwest of the Empire. The people's mood dropped considerably, and the lost war shook their faith in the Emperor's abilities and legitimacy. Further, our Army is in shambles."

"Although it might be unwise to force people to accept new laws, the Army officers, with help of Houlandin, have a military Edict proposal that might be worth consideration." The Advisor pulls out fresh parchment for you.

"Do you wish to issue an Edict this year?"

A) "Absolutely not, the people will turn against me!"
B) "Sure! It's time I got back to my administrative duties!"

You decide to send the Army against the bandits.

Quote
2*

They fail miserably against the bandits. Many a recruit never comes back home, and bandits sing songs of the loot and victories.

You decide to...

A) Send some money under the table to this 'Queen Roca', so that she moves somewhere northwards mayhaps?
B) Ignore this debacle for now.
C) Buy services of some competent lvl20+ adventurers to get rid off the bandit scum.

It helped relax your mind. The singing was especially nice. Indeed, now you see that your sons were right.

1139 AD, Mid-Autumn

Banditry is on the rise in the devastated north-west; roaming groups of evildoers are ambushing and killing travelers and even raiding remote settlements for food and loot, most of them operating under auspices of 'Queen Roca', whoever that would be. Governors in the region cannot handle the growing problem by themselves, and therefore turn to the Crown for help.

You decide to...

A) Send the Army to crush the bandit horde into nothingness!
B) Hire some lvl20+ adventures to get rid of the bandits, they do that all the time.
C) Ignore the problem, it will go away on its own for sure.

You decide to send spies to do some dirty work against the uncles. Nothing overt, nothing public.

The council ends and you grimace.

1139 AD, Summer

You've heard that Cidric had lost few and won few battles, overall a net score of nothing.

But soon the tide might turn in his favor; a keep where food was stored for the rebels experienced a random blaze. One of the uncles had the unfortunate distinction of breaking his neck on a set of stairs in his own manor. And finally, a large troop of mercenaries abandoned the rebels' cause. All this in a span of a month.

1139 AD, Autumn

The last three months were particularily dreadful for you. Your sons have begun to meddle more in your rulings, and your courtiers are listening to them. Houlandin and Leath are coordinating with the Spymaster, while you're enjoying a nice summer vacation off work. It is rather cathartic, you have to admit.

It seems you've spent most of the time with...

A) Your old friend, darkness, lurking in the back of your mind.
B) Certain vintage of red wine, a delicious and refreshing beverage it is.
C) That one brown-haired maiden, young but wise, what was her name again?...
D) Alldivines in the local temple, listening to choirs and preachings of their priests.
