You decide to finally relent and inform the dwarves you will pay them for peace. You also tell your court that Queen Dogethe is to be forgiven her 'betrayal', but only this once.

1117 AD, Late Winter

The eastern front is again quiet. Your Army is gearing up for warmer days and the Ceodwells doesn't seem keen on retaking the border forts.

The dwarves accept your tribute, and a delegation of them (with hefty amount of guard) arrives at the capital, taking your moneys. They also bring you a peace treaty signed by Lord of Zonalath, wherein the dwarves accept the traditional tribute for your crime of destroying Zasitost.

1117 AD, End of the Year

Happiness: 4
Population: 7
Economy: 0!
Army: 4

"...and the recent tribute to Dwarves basically destroyed all what was left of our savings, my liege. The Army is doing its best to stay afloat and the people aren't exceptionally happy at the moment." The Advisor folds up the papers and looks at you.

A) "Raise the taxes then, we need the money ASAP!"
B) "Slash the Army's budget for a year, we're doing well against Ceodwell anyways!"
C) "Don't worry, we will get money soon. At least, I hope so..."

You decide to field your Army further and give order to march deeper into Ceodwell.

1117 AD, Midwinter

Silver is sent to the Treasury, while gemstones go east to the Eldrican.

Few days later you receive a report from the Army!

Quote
4*

Your soldiers ran smack into almost a ten thousand strong force of Gubta that was marching from behind Calahan's seat. The mighty battle was won msotly thanks to power of Fireblood, and the Gubta lost almost a third of their forces before they retreated. Your soldiers lost a quarter, before the Ceodwells moved in from the northeast, engaging your men few days after the battle against the Gubta!

Quote
3*

While the Ceodwells numbered only three thousand, they still managed to rout your men after inflicting almost a thousand of casualties. Your Army, harassed by the Ceodwell soldiers, retreated north and west, to lands near the border keeps. Still, numerically speaking, Methiant dealt much more damage to Gubta and Ceodwells than other way around.

1117 AD, Late Winter

Terrible news from the north! The dwarves of Zonalath have not only broken the encirclement of the mountains, they also managed to bribe Queen Dogethe to withdraw from the conflict!

As far as rumors go, the Queen was feeling super guilty about this, having to sacrifice the alliance for her people's wellbeing, but who can believe the feelings of such a female viper like her now??

The governors of the cities in northeast beg for assistance as two armies of heavily armed dwarves (for a total of three thousand footsoldiers) is marching through the lands, wreaking havoc.

Your court begins to panic again and in many the burning hatred for Queen Dogethe of Cydwyl grows every second.

As for the dwarven menace...

A) Fine, I will give them the money they want.
B) Our Army from Ceodwell must now go to fight the dwarves!

As for Queen Dogethe's most despicable act of utter betrayal...

A) It's understandable really, even if it was a dickish move right now.
B) She has abandoned us in the time of need! We do not forget - nor forgive!

You refuse to pay the dwarves even a single coin.

1117 AD, Winter

King of Lametania has sent you a letter of complaint; your withdrawal of soldiers was a disaster as it allowed a noble rebellion to spring up in the west of the kingdom, and King Umar will have hard time to repel it. He considers the treaty void and sends only a caravan of money instead of crafts along with the letter.

There has been an attempt by Ceodwells to assault your border!

Quote
7!*

Not only the Ceodwells were beaten, but your soldiers took a step into Calahan's domain and took three border forts which were garrisoned by naught but skeleton crews with minor amounts of supplies!

A) Onwards! Onwards to further glory!
B) And that's where we will turtle through the winter.

You decide to let the Army rest for now.

1117 AD, Mid-Autumn

All is quiet on the eastern front, except some raids by Ceodwellian horsemen (which are repaid for with raids by your own raiders).

Queen Dogethe sends you a letter; she has managed to talk the dwarves of Zonalath up for negotiations. Unfortunately the words of your deed at Zasitost has spread and the dwarven race as a whole is pissed off. If you want them off your mind, they demand that you send most of your money to Ankurvat, which will distribute it to the Dwarven High King and the other dwarven cities on the continent.

A) I can send them some money, but not that much!
B) Fine, we have a deal.
C) Heck no I ain't payin bruh!

You call up the men from Lametania to the frontlines.

1117 AD, Autumn

The Army regroups and recuperates, reaching almost six thousand in numbers by now. That's fortunate, because the scouts and agents over the border report that the Ceodwells have also regrouped; a force of four thousand, mostly archers and cavalry, is on its way to the border! Suprisingly, there has been no sign of Gubta activity since your last victory.

A week later you receive another report!

Quote
6*

Glorious victory has been scored against the Ceodwells! Their numbers were broken and many of their soldiers were killed.

However, your commanders are unwilling to step into Ceodwellian territory once again, out of fear of lurking Gubta Oliphaunts, apparently.

A) Don't they know that cowardice can result in docked pay? Onwards, my brave soldiers!
B) That is a sound thinking. We ought to gather men during this lull in hostilities, too.

You demand they force the dwarves to sign the vassalship papers!

1117 AD, Late Summer

Quote

They weren't successful, and the captive dwarves fought for their lives. Many a Methiantese soldier died in the great struggle which saw the fortress of Zasitost catch on fire and its inner halls looted by your soldiers, dwarven patriots and random passerby adventurers. The city is in ruin and only its massive walls stand tall nowadays. What was left of dwarven populace disappeared into deep tunnels under the city, which your soldiers refuse to penetrate. Instead, they opted to cover the entrances with rock and dirt and rubble.

Your administrators begun poking around nearby human-led settlements, asking them to quietly accept they rule; all of these little hamlets which previously helped feed the city now respond to you.

Quote

The battle at the border with the Ceodwell was yet another disaster; while this time the Gubta came in lesser numbers, your commanders simply flubbed it and another thousand or so soldiers was killed while the rest fled westwards. The casualties amongst Gubta must've been negligible, as they easily begun storming the border forts few days after the rout.

Quote
2

While the garrisons did their best to inflict some losses upon the Gubta, your conquests were all negated. The Gubta decided to not stop after this string of victories, and made after your soldiers into your borderlands!

Quote
4*

But that's where your soldiers decided to make a stand. The Gubta were routed and some casualties were inflicted, but your soldiers aren't in best shape either. Your commanders and noblemen alike are worried about this development at the eastern front. What now, they ask?

A) Time to call up that thousand something of men from Lametania?
B) Time to ask Queen Dogethe to provide more forces?
C) Both of the above, maybe?
D) Time to negotiate with Ceodwells and the Gubtas?

You ask your officers to negotiate for vassalization of Zasitost!

A week later two reports come.

One is from Queen Dogethe. Having little soldiers to spare due to certain difficulties in the north, she has instead blockaded to dwarves of Zonalath, if such sneaky earth-dwellers can be blockaded, from leaving their mountains. She has dedicated little over three thousand troops for that.

The other is from your commanders in the west.

Quote
2*

They faced the Gubta in battle and they were horribly routed. Almost a third of your men in Ceodwell has been lost, and the rest is fleeing towards the border, hoping to stand firm at the border forts they've captured earlier.

Quote
3to4

They also had some luck in finding out the involvement of the Gubta after capturing some foreigners; apparently Calahan III struck a deal with them! They were to repel your armies in return for some sort of tribute and other concessions. They weren't able to get more details though.

Few days after that, you receive a letter from your officers in Zasistost; the dwarves refused your demands. After another round of negotiation, the dwarves of the eastern citadel are willing however to send you some money as tribute in exchange for their continued independence.

A) They don't seem to understand their position! Pester them more till they give in to my demands.
B) Some money? They better refund the Rainbow Scepter, or else!
C) Fine, that's fine, I've got more important things to do than to deal with some stubborn shortstacks.

You send extra priority distress call to Queen Dogethe, asking her to take care of Zonalath dwarves instead.

1117 AD, Midsummer

Great news come from Zasitost! Your brave soldiers finally, after a breach, managed to enter the fortified city. A great battle occured, followed by equally great looting of dwarven crafts and capture of many of their noblemen and artisans.

Your commanders ask whether they are to negotiate dwarven surrender.

A) Send them to the capital, I will negotiate myself.
B) Negotiate an advantageous treaty of reparations.
C) Negotiate for peace and that's enough.
D) Negotiate their vassalization to the throne of Methiant.

You decide to get Cydwyls involved and mobilize the Methiantese youth.

Within a week, new regiments are sent east...

...and that's when you get the news.

The dwarven lords of Zonalath in the north-west has declared support for their brethren! The leaders of settlements in the mountainous region report dwarven war parties and strange siege machines rolling through the Rainbow Lizard mountains right into the strip of Methiantese land bordering the peaks.

Your courtiers are starting to panic. You decide to...

A) Send a new letter to Queen Dogethe, asking her to take care of Zonalath instead.
B) Send a negotiator to Zasitost, in hopes of securing a peace.
C) Stretch your forces a bit more so you can deal with Zonalath dwarves as well.

You decide this is a good pretext for war! You order your Army in Ceodwell to concentrate on attacking Zasitost now.

1117 AD, Summer

Your dear wife Esta gives birth to another boy! She names him 'Ustwelf' after one of her many grand-uncles.

The report from Zasitost is a terrible one! While your Fireblood machines do well against fire-breathing steel-plated fortifications of the dwarven designs, the fortificatins themselves burn, maim and eviscerate many of your soldiers.

Emergency report comes from Ceodwell! The forward scouts have sighted a massive Gubta army traversing through Ceodwell land, as if it was theirs, right toward Methiantese encampments! The estimates place the number of Gubta at at least 12.000; most of them bowmen and assorted sorts of melee infantry, with at least a thousand of horse cavalry for support and twenty mighty Oliphaunts, greyish beasts of terror and awe.

The commanders in Ceodwell ask for reinforcements if they are to continue the campaign! Your courtiers and officers at the Palace shout and argue amongst themselves, and two proposals are made; to include Cydwyls into the fighting and to call up emergency mobilization for a year.

As for involving Queen Dogethe and the mighty northerner armies...

A) Time to cash in all those favors of prior years.
B) Nah, let's not involve them just yet.

As for calling emergency mobilization in Methiant...

A) Yup, we definitely need numbers right now.
B) No, the situation isn't this dire yet.

Your Army has given the Ceodwells a smashing! The border fortresses were quickly overran and the main body of the Ceodwellian forces has been routed at the Battle of Augas.

The same day, you receive a short letter from the Dwarves, in which they claim responsibility for destruction of Rainbow Scepter, as the Kings of Dwarves deemed your dynasty unworthy of possessing it anymore.

A) This is an act of war!!
B) I still want my money!
C) Meh, fine.

You declare a war to reclaim the rightful Methiant territories!
