You meet with the messenger first.

He brings no letter, but instead a spoken reply from the Hurthlings.

"They say that your peasants have questioned their agricultural mastery, sire, and made some joeks about their height, so the Hurthlings has taken this as grave insult to their kind and killed the offenders and their companions as punishment." The courtiers murmur in disbelief; this is matter for negotiation and the courts, not wanton murder!

You decide to...

A) Ignore this incident.
B) Demand from northern governors to make the people less offensive to Hurthlings.
C) Demand from the Hurthlings to be a bit more friendlier and less aggressive.
D) Just kick Hurthlings outta Methiant, this cooperation deal won't work if this keeps happening.

You send a letter of warning to the nearest Hurthling settlement.

1106 AD, Autumn

The messenger with letter sent to the Hurthlings has come back; but there's also delegation of merchants awaiting an audience, as they wish to talk about the expedition sent into Ironbone mountains. You will first speak to...

A) The messenger.
B) The merchants.

"All I need is to keep it low."

"My king?"

"I will tell you later." You push against her, ready to stay in her arms for some more time. No one to audience today anyways.

1106 AD, Late Summer

There have been few incidents with the Hurthlings, the governors in the north say. While they do seem to be rather helpful with the fields, they also get very agressive very easily.

"How aggressive?" The messenger looks at you, turning his cap in his hands.

"Err, at least twenty five peasants knife'd m'lord." You decide to...

A) Send a letter of warning to nearest Hurthling settlement.
B) Kick the Hurthlings outta your Kingdom.
C) Leave it be, they just need time to adapt.
D) Scold your subjects for angering such valuable neighbours.

You decide its time to lower the taxes, for good of all.

1106 AD, Summer

The Fireblood arrives on schedule, and the Eldricans who brought them take Methiant gemstones back to their homeland.

1106 AD, Midsummer

Your hand runs over her marble-like body, over those two large pillows of her. A giggle from her soft, red lips causes your eyes to dart upwards to her lovely, triangular face, crowned with a waterfall of long, black hairs. Those two green eyes, sparkling like gemstones, from which you cannot pry your sight.

Daetha, is her name, a beautiful name for beautiful woman of the northlands.

Is she a seductress, or a demon in disguise, or an assassin? You do not care, for her warm embrace and more than eager body suits all your carnal needs. This romance of yours, consummated many times by now, is blooming like a healthy flower in the spring.

But she was once just a maid, a maid of your palace like any other, but one evening you felt something towards her, and she was more than willing to reciprocate. Was it evening of the early summer, or was it late spring? You do not really remember, nor do you care to: your bed is no longer cold nor half-empty when you sleep in it, and that's whats important.

She asks for nothing in return but your companionship and your dedication to her. A perfect companion for a lonely King like you.

But as your lips are about to meet with her and lock in a lengthy kiss once again, the stinging thought still occurs to you - she is a maid, and you are a King. This is simply not permissible.

A) My face upon her pillows is all I need, and with enough care, nobody will know.
B) Alas, this means that soon I will need to return her to her homeland in the north.
C) Then I shall make her my wife and Queen! To damnation with those who do not approve!

You sign the papers so that the military restructurization can take place, promising methiant a proper army.

1105 AD, Late Winter

Censuses have been sent from across the Kingdom, indicating that the population grew in recent years!

1105 AD, End of the Year

Like every other year, the Advisor arrives to present you the Scrolls of Kingdom Status.

Happiness: 6
Population: 7

Army: 4

"There has been few more reports of tax collectors being assaulted on the roads, my liege. The governors, especially in faraway provinces, are concerned that the high taxation policy, even with our bureaucrats keeping abuse to minimum, will cause an explosion of discontent in near future."

A) "Then its time to bring taxes to usual level."
B) "Oh I'm sure we will be fine."
C) "Then its time to make soldiers into enforcers!"

You attempt to have them keep the coins in exchange of salt.

Unfortunately, all it does is to get them feel insulted and leave in a huff, declaring that the agreement is done for. Oh well.

1105 AD, Winter

The winter starts rather harsh in the region, with early chilly weather and then three days of blizzard. Fortunately, the weather clears up after some time, at least in central Methiant; the people from former Felonsein regions report that the weather didn't seem much improved, even if the Scepter did its magic.

Your courtiers wonder if there is actually a limit on its power.

1105 AD, Midwinter

The Marshal and the Advisor arrive at your study, brings scrolls with them.

"MY LIEGE! I am proud to announce that our military reform draft is FULLY COMPLETE! We are ready to REFORM!!"

"It might take a few years, but with our newest bureaucratic machine well oiled, it shouldn't be long. I would advise warring with our neighbours as the changes might cause unpreparedness and problems."

"BUT SOON! SOON WE WILL BE GREAT! Just sign the papers, sire." The Marshal hands you the paper.

A) Sign it!
B) Toss it!

You keep the taxes raised.

1105 AD, Midsummer

The Fireblood caravan is here, leaving you with stuff to make stuff explode, in return taking your gemstones.

Meanwhile, you get reports that the people keep paying taxes, although incidents happen from time to time.

11105 AD, Autumn

The alchemists are proud to report that the Thundercats have been refined in their design and the crews trained. Without delay, these fearsome Fireblood machines are added to your Army, and nothing blows up. Woo!

Few days later you have visitors from Agares. They are merchant representatives of that country.

"Greetings, King of Methiant. We bring news that are sad, as the money of your country is inferior to the wealth our King demands for our salt. Tell us, do you have anything more valuable than these small silvers you give us already?"

You decide to...

A) Try to persuade to them to honor the old deal.
B) Annul the trade agreement as its not gonna work it seems.
C) Offer them gemstones currently mined for Eldrican.

You support the expensive model of professional army. The army officers believe they should have everything on paper within a year, and then, with your permission, they can set out to work to restructurize the Army proper.

1105 AD, Summer

A delegation of governors of the lesser developed lands has come for an audience, bringing news of rumbling amongst the peasants. It seems that after scant few years of extra taxation, the people wish for the times when the taxes were lower. There have already been few incidents involving angry peasants and your tax collectors, and therefore the governors ask that you lower the tax to old values.

A) Sure thing, peeps.
B) No, I need monies!

You decide to throw some parties to celebrate the prosperity of the land.

Quote

Everyone celebrates heavily and many a young couple earn the scold of their more restrained parents on the mornings after.

1104 AD, Winter

The Agaresian caravan arrives on point, and salt is exchanged for money.

Quote
2to5

People are thankful for the Crown to provide them with salt, while the Treasury reports that it was able to get enough money to cover the payment for salt.

Quote

Unfortunately, the silver mines are at their end. There was little silver brought up this year and even less left down in the mines, the report from overseer says. He therefore closes the mines for good.

1104 AD, End of the Year

The autumn and winter has come and has gone without much incident. The northerners are exploring the wild, the east is warring, the west is quiet and the south is still debating on their unholy amalgamation of republican and imperial ideas.

And per usual, the Advisor comes by your study. He spreads the Scrolls of Kingdom Status on your desk.

Happiness: 6
Population: 6
Economy: 3
Army: 4

Half of these numbers are rather low, but there's naught you can do at the moment; the taxation is already going hard on the populace and the mercenaries seem few and scarce, even amongst Alldivine Cloisters, if the Advisor is to be believed.

The need for military reform is so dire that even your courtiers see that clearly, and has convened a council which you attend. The recent conquests of Methiant, Cydwyl and Eldrican has organized many local states under powerful overlords. But security is loose and patrols scarce; peasants tend to their farms with nary a guard to patrol their villages. Methiant neighbours grow strong day by day and who knows when they will turn their eyes upon the fertile meadows of Methiant?

Therefore, the Kingdom cannot anymore count on mercenaries, they're far too expensive yet unreliable source of military might. For the past century, it was okay, but the disastrous policies of non-draft by old warlords need to be either rescinded or replaced.

The council, unlike any other, continues for days and you're simply tired of the endless discussion. Fortunately, two schools of thought emerge:

The first of course believes that a Kingdom, like any Kingdom in this region did in the past, should press peasants into military service so that they die in wars of the monarch. While it might cause unhappiness, it would provide cheap and easy means of replenishing numbers, or even raise up troops en masse in times of emergency. Kingdom of Eldrican follows this philosophy, owing to large domain populated with numerous settlements and the dynasty's prosperous and non-oppresive rule that keeps the people docile.

The second follows the southern models of 'standing army', something that the old Kingdom of Luathbas has adopted too; the Crown provides arms, supplies and payment for soldiers that are conscripted at young age, trained and then employed in the field. Of course, this means that lots of money will need to be spend per year to maintain such a force, and Methiant isn't exactly abundant in money. Cydwyls, on other hand, took on this military way of life after their old Dahnian masters, as they are wealthy enough to afford this model.

The discussion could go on, but its obvious to you - and the court - that these are the only two viable alternatives. You cant have both.

Therefore, when the nobles ask you to support either of policies, you decide to...

A) Support the old, traditional ways of counting on peasant forces and massed mobilization.
B) Support the well-maintained but expensive model for standing, paid forces.
C) Turn both reforms down, we ain't need stinkin' reforms in my kingdom!

I thought that after 2 weeks hiatus muh interest in FEF would return, but nope, absolutely 0% interest in GMing FEF6

Real life and tbh new computer gives me more than enough things to do without having to devote time to number crunching for an hour or so per update.

So this is now a dead game, definitely.

You send him a rather blunt reply.

1104 AD, Mid-Autumn

Weather has been calm thorough the year and that has concluded with a very bontiful harvest! People across Methiant, weary of recent upheavals and internal strife, clamor for a harvest festival to be hosted by the Crown so that everyone can feast and be merry!

A) Let's party all day and all night!!
B) We're on tight budget here, sorry.
