DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 30, 2017, 04:00:54 pm »
This was quite eventful 17th of Hematite in my fort, I would say!

First, the body of our fisherdwarf, Bomrek, slain by orcish arrow, was discovered and buried.

And the current mayor, Bomrek, was replaced by his younger brother, also called Bomrek.

Then Bomrek, our ancient-by-now female cat and resident demon rat hunter gave birth to another litter of kittens in her long life. Her late owner, recruit Bomrek (death by training accident), would be proud of her!

You order the Felonsines to blast away.

For next few minutes, they huddle up near their crates and together they mix in various ingredients. Then, Fireblood and large stone projectiles are loaded into the large metal tubes of Blackhearts.

With hot red pokers, the little knots on top are lit. Then there's sizzli-

You can swear you hear thunders that day, and day became night from all the smoke! The mining site goes up in puffs of snow and dirt.

The first salvo ends abruptly and the Felonsines prepare another, cleaning the tubes with large brushes and cloth.

Just as they're ready to load and fire another salvo, scouts bring back urgent news; the Frostlings began their march toward your positions! You decide to...

A) All units - attack, attack!
B) Continue bombardment for another salvo, and then we will see what to do next.
C) Horsemen and archers will go and harass the approaching undead, the rest stays with Blackhearts.

//Detoxicated's vote not valid cuz he voted only on 2 of 3 decisions ;v

re: Flammable zombies&Blackhearts:

Technically if you apply Fireblood on Frostlings who aren't done in by fire, you would get well-armed tough zombies running towards you while on fire, and that's bad methinks v;

Blackhearts is indeed fancy name for bombards, or very large basilisks. Definitely a late Medieval cannon thing.

You decide to lead the Army yourself, backed by fearsome Blackhearts! The courtiers and officers cheer your name!

Congratulations! King Yoe embarks on his first military campaign!

During his absence, the Advisor and Queen Auga will take care of palatial matters, diplomacy and such.

It takes several days for the Blackheart units to roll northeast. Your people would be at the site of the silver mines at least a day earlier if not those heavy, cumbersome things they need to escort.

The silver mine is abandoned by your miners, wrecked beyond recognition and full of Frostlings milling about the place, say the scouts. It seems that the Frostlings are unaware of your presence, or aren't really in any haste to wreck the rest of your holdings.

A) Blackhearts away! Bombard the damned things with death from above!!
B) Time to harass them with horsemen and archers, while the rest of the Army waits nearby.
C) All units - chaaaarrrgee!
D) Let's wait for now and see what the Frostlings will do.

You decide to let secrets remain secrets, for now.

1079 AD, Winter

Frostlings! Frostlings has come amidst heavy blizzards!

A menace that has not been seen in your lands, nay, entirety of the region, for more than four centuries, has been seen descending from the Rainbow Lizard, Ironbone and Hurthling mountains!

The undead men who wear thick furs and rusted weaponry of their ancient lifes, have no chill for the living. Travelers say they've attacked Felonsein, Ceodwell, Cydwyl - and Methiant. By now a host of six hundred of them is ravaging the silver mines to the northeast!

Scholars undust the old tomes to search for weakness, but naught is really found; steel does not work against their dead bodies, nor fire is able to lick and consume their permafrozen flesh. Only by sheer numbers or awesome firepower, one can fell the Frostlings, your scholars say.

Emergency council is convened, upon which some decisions are made.

As for possibility of reinforcements from Lametania...

A) Nay, we will need them for later.
B) This is best opportunity to call them!

As for battleplan against Frostlings...

A) Send the Army along with Blackhearts to blast these wretched undead apart along with their mountains!
B) Send the Army northeast and attempt to find best place and time to beat the Frostlings.
C) Gather forces and adopt some defensive tactics, but don't attack Frostlings yet.

As for your participation in this campaign...

A) Naaaaaaah, I think I will stay in the Palace.
B) BUT OF COURSE!! ONWARDS, TO GLORY!!

//No split votes pls.

You give the trinket to your wife. She appreciates your thought muchly.

1079 AD, Mid-Autumn

The Felonsine caravan arrives at your palace ground!

The fearsome Blackhearts, large bronze tubes as tall as bedroom chamber of yours, are rolled into the castle. Ten of these siege engines are cared for by fifty men each; forty drag them around on wheeled platforms while others seem to be tending to chests and boxes that are under lock and key.

The commander of the Blackheart unit salutes you. "Greetings, King Yoe of Methiant. Per agreement with my masters, I and my men are here to serve you. The thunderous roar of our inventions will scare your enemies away; and their castles will shake and crumble under the might of our stone projectiles."

They're given loggings and they settle into the castle easily.

By the evening, the Spymaster and Advisor are by your side, with preeliminary report from the Spymaster: no Fireblood scriptures were found in the belongings of the Felonsines nor there are previously mixed amounts of Fireblood in the chests and boxes; all the crews brought were large amounts of coal, charcoal, saltpetre, sulphur, some jars of pine resin and even black oil. Some chests are kept under Felonsine guard and thus haven't been checked yet.

The Advisor sighs and looks at the Spymaster, then at you.

"Should we attempt to discover the secrets of Fireblood with less subtle means, sire?"

A) "Yes, bribe and threaten the Blackheart crewmembers so they spill the beans; surely the Fireblood formula is in their heads!"
B) "Yes, search through all the boxes, even the heavily locked ones; surely the Fireblood formula must be kept under tightest lock!"
C) "Nah. We have Blackhearts, Fireblood, and the operators. We don't need anything else at the moment, and we might stumble upon the secret in the future anyway."

You decide to raise the tax for the next year.

1079 AD, Summer

Your soldiers return from Kingdom of Ceodwell! Their numbers thinned out by a fifth, but they bring tales of their brave exploits and many victories against the orcs, as well as letter of gratitude from your father-in-law.

1079 AD, Midsummer

Your beloved wife gives birth to a boy!

Alas, the child was born still. The maids weep while your courtiers curse the heavens for this insult to your family.

1079 AD, Late Summer

There's much rejoicing in the court when a messenger arrives with report from the prospector. Apparently, he has already struck crystals and jewels of white and yellow and pink coloration. Your Treasurer, judging from the report, considers this more of a source of income rather than any worthwile bantering good. Still, money is money!

At the end of the report, the prospector-now-manager promises to have the first caravan of jewels brought to your palace by Winter.

1079 AD, Autumn

While cleaning out an old cottage that once belonged to the falconer of previous tyrant of Methiant, your servants stumbled upon a treasure cache!

They've discovered an oaken chest buried under the floor of the cottage. Inside the chest, there were layers upon layers of flax cloth, with some flasks of old perfume and a curious item between the folds; the item being a round amulet made of cast iron and infused with orichalcum, giving it an awesome 'streaky' appearance. The scholars and priests detect a tinge of magic inside the item, but they have no idea what powers it might have or where did this amulet came from, as there's nothing about it in daily chronicles of tyrant's life.

You decide to...

A) Give the trinket to your wife to ease her suffering.
B) Declare it Crown Jewel of Methiant and wear it yourself.
C) Sell it away for some quick cash.
D) Search for a Wizard or Sorceress to determine the powers of this item.

9309
You send the soldiers eastwards to Kingdom of Ceodwell.

1078 AD, End of the Year

The Advisor once again brings you the Scrolls of Kingdom Status:

Happiness: 4
Population: 2
Economy: 2
Army: 4(3)

"The Kingdom isn't doing that well, sire. The settlement project is progressing slowly, but should bear fruit in few years. We have shortage of funds though. Is there anything you wish to do about it?" You decide to...

A) Hold fast and perservere with your sheer will.
B) Raise the tax of commoners for a year.
C) Put the settlements project on hold for now.
D) Halt the project, raise the tax.

9310
You dismiss the Battlebrother as you don't have the money.

1078 AD, Winter

First loads of sulphur, saltpetre and others are packed up and sent westwards, just as silver from the other mine arrives at your Treasury.

1078 AD, Midwinter

"Orcs?"

"Aye, King Yoe." The Ceodwellian envoy takes off his beret. "The mongrels, not seen around these parts for centuries, raided few settlements in the soutwest of my liege's kingdom. As he is dealing with some unruly Kashite and Gubta elsewhere, he has shortage of men and thus asks you, his son-in-law, to provide some troops for about half a year or so."

A) "Sure thing, orcish plague must be dealt no matter the cost!"
B) "Send my apologies to your master, as I have simply no one to send him."

9311
You ask him to tell you details and specifics.

He talks oh so marvelously and so wisely about these gemstones! He is the man of the craft and wisdom he speaks of. While some of your courtiers grumble about how eager you are, you shush them and sponsor the man right away!

The prospector bows several times on his way out of the door.

The Battlebrother is let in next.

"Greetings, King Yoe of Methiant. I am Battlebrother Questin, on an errand from the Cloister of Augas. As we have received the message from our brothers at Tech, we have been forming a troop of thousand youth under guidance of handful of veterans. Pray tell, good King, do you wish to procure their services in return for donations to our altars?" You tell him that...

A) You won't be buying services of the warrior-monk-mercenaries today.
B) You will gladly exchange your money for the services of the armed faithful.

9312
You let the merchant-prospector talk first.

"Greetings, King Yoe, on this joyous day! Here I was, traveling through the eastlands of your vast kingdom, whereas I talked with some villagers and obtained a precious bit of knowledge - gemstones lie in the mountains to east, my lord! With my keen eye and your sponsorship, I can have mining camp set up, where precious aquamarines and emeralds can be mined for! So how about it?"

You decide to...

A) Refuse to sponsor his mining enterprise.
B) Ask him to tell you details about those gemstones.
C) Gladly provide him with money and supplies he needs.

9313
You sigh and send money for the affected peasants.

1078 AD, Autumn

A report arrives from the new mineral mines in the south; both locales begun digging for sulphur, coal and saltpeter, which come in relatively small amounts.

Few days later two people wish for audience; one is Battlebrother Questin of the Augas Cloister, and the other is a young prospector and jeweller merchant who says he has a splendid opportunity for the Crown. You tell the guards to...

A) Let in Battlebrother Questin first.
B) Let in the prospector-merchant first.

9314
You conclude the negotiations with Felonsine envoy, and he leaves to inform his lords of the agreement.

1078 AD, Summer

Two weeks of torrential rain have left many farmlands flooded or otherwise wrecked. Peasants across the country bemoan their losses while provincial governors and village elders plead for crown officials for material support!

A) And they shall have it! Dispense with money at once!
B) Naw, we can't spare a single coin, they will have to endure.

A wave of immigrants came to fortress... and so did a dragon.

They were five tiles apart.

Spectacular fireworks were had.
