You decide to agree to the trade of copper and its products for various luxuries available from Calvendocian markets.

The first results of this trade should be visible by the end of the next year.

961 AD, Autumn

"The latest report places the numbers of dead Eistians above hundred, my liege." Says the advisor, carrying numerous scrolls. "And this one says that an Eist nobleman was amongst the casaulties."

He then managed to unroll one other. "A whole group of fifty Eist horsemen was routed the other day. Sire, the Eist is going too far with its escapades to hunt down the refugees. I spoke with the Marshal the other day and he says its about time we give Eist a 'punch on the nose', if you know what we mean."

A) "No counter-raids."
B) "Yes, let's see how they like to be raided themselves!"

9902
You don't pay attention to the whole thing. Later on, during a chat with one of your courtiers, you hear that the battlemaster slain 3 bravados before leaving the capital for the southern lands.

Few days later a reply from your senior, King Tinwulf II, arrives; along with 300 swift and well-equipped light horsemen: Tinwulf writes that you're allowed to post guards at the border, along with his cavalry, and hunt down any Eist intruders who break the law. No outside counter-raids though.

You send the orders and the borrowed horsemen eastwards to the border.

961 AD, Summer

Not that long afterwards, you receive a report; 39 Eist people were captured and 11 killed in total for harassing refugees, trespassing the Duchy's borders and beating up your newest citizens.

961 AD, Midsummer

A delegation of tall, pale-skinned, black-haired men dressed in blues and oranges arrive at your court. They were golden neck-collars and have intricately detailed leafy clasps on their cloaks - yet they're definitely not elves.

"Greetings! We are the merchants of the Calvendocia. We have heard many tales from our dwarven partners that these lands in the east, past the savage horselands and the hostile Kiwi lands, are rich in mineral resources. Therefore our Council have sent us here to seek out potential trading partners."

"What exactly are you seeking?" The leader, wearing a diadem of sorts, steps forward.

"Our land has plenty of foodstuffs and good timber, extravagant spices and polished stone, plant and worm fibers, but little in terms of noble metals - copper, brass, bronze, silver and gold. We therefore mainly offer to buy these resources in exchange for the things you might not have, and we happen to know that your land is lacking in spice and luxuries." One other steps forward as well.

"The dwarves told us that your have profitable copper mines under your rule, Duke. How about we offer spices, furs, wormcloth and jewellery for your noblemen in exchange for both raw and processed copper?" You ponder the offer for a while...

A) Politely decline the offer as you need copper more than luxuries at the moment.
B) Luxuries will sure placate the grumbling of noblemen and maybe even merchants and other well-doing citizens - and a happy citizen is a loyal citizen.
C) Ask if they can offer or are in need for something else.

You send a letter to your senior next; informing him that King of Eist is not respecting your authiority.

961 AD, Late Spring

A traveling swordmaster from the west, Cotarvaan, happens at the capital and after gathering some attention on the marketplace, promises jewellery and fame upon those who best him - and death to those who fail.

A) Nice.
B) A-ha! A challenge by a worthy opponent! Let's fight him at once!

You reply to the governors that Singularist refugees are welcome in the Duchy and they're allowed to let them settle in.

You also write a letter to the King of Eist in which you 'politely' demand that his people stop interfering with lives of travelers and people in the Duchy.

960 AD, Mid-Spring

A reply arrives from King of Eist by the means of a letter.

It is rather short letter in which he informs you that the refugees that flee to your Duchy as criminals, heretics and undesirables in the eyes of Eist citizenry. Therefore, you can keep the refugees, but the Eistian law will find its way to the escaping peoples even if you try to protect them.

You decide to...

A) Shrug and don't give it another thought.
B) Deploy Army to the east and order the garrison commanders to intercept and detain any Eist soldiers and/or emissaries.
C) Threaten the King of Eist with war if he does not rein his peoples in.
D) Inform King Tinwulf II that the King of Eist isn't respecting your borders and is sending soldiers after people settling down in your territory.

You decide to throw some parties for the angry peeps of yours.

961 AD, Spring

The governors of the cities in the east of the Duchy have sent a group letter to you. Lately, they've been getting a lot of Singularist refugees from the lands conquered by the Eist, and they wouldn't have a problem with it if not the Eist 'crusaders' hitting the refugees in the city alleys and the woods. They wish to know the official stance of the Duke on the matter of refugees, so they know whether they can act against the Eist. Or the refugees.

You decide to proclaim that...

A) All refugees are to be turned away from the Duchy so that they won't bring their religious strife with Eist here!
B) Singularist refugees shall see Duchy's borders always open for them, and any Eist zealot caught bullying them will be punished.
C) Refugees can stay but the Duchy won't be giving them any sort of protection.
D) Refugees can stay, and you also shall send a letter to the King of Eist asking that he reins his zealots in.

You agree to pay them in five years. The dwarves write down the contract in two copies - one for them and one for you, of course. Then they bow and depart, the guards reporting they've headed northwest.

960 AD, Late Winter

The garrison of the entrance reports that one night, the whole mountain shook, the tunnel then sparkled, lit with blue light, and then it collapsed upon itself. The officers therefore decided to abandon the outpost and return home.

960 AD, End of the Year

The Advisor hurriedly brings the Scrolls of Kingdom Status to you one morning.

"The overall situation in the Duchy is somewhat unstable, my liege. Peasants especially are doubly unhappy about being drafted and serving with criminals, and they might've been few... incidents with the criminals. The guilty were taken care of, of course."

"As we happen to have some wealth gathered, mayhaps it would be wise to host some festivals to pacify the unhappy population of the Duchy?"

A) "We're definitely overdue for major celebrations. Party for all!"
B) "No, let's not waste what we just gathered on wild partying!"

You attempt to negotiate something else than just front-up payment.

"We've heard that you do not have much in terms of income and wealth, so we offer to postpone collection of the payment for our services for, say, 5 years."

A) Deal!
B) No deal.

You have them let into the palace.

"Greetings, Duke Tven." The leader of the delegation of pale dwarves, draped in black and greens, bows his head. "We have heard that you have an entrance to the deep underground where the Toqva live. Truly it is a good thing you stopped them from bringing devastation upon your land. We offer, for a price of course, to collapse the tunnel they made and infuse the earth and rocks with magics that will repel these savage critters from the depths."

A) Attempt to negotiate with them.
B) Pay up at once.
C) Politely decline their offer.
