I usually just dig a tunnel into a hillside and expand out from that. I tend to have a couple of things like refuse piles in a walled compound outside, though.

We should have one. In Europe. In the UK.
That dinky li'l island? All the way out there?

We should have one in America. In my backyard.

That colonial backwater? All the way out there?

I think I'd rather be civilised.
Guys, guys... calm down. How about we compromise, and have it in Canada?
Wouldn't a compromise mean having it in the middle of the Atlantic?

Pretty sure it involves mining out the entire world and making a slade spaceship to move on to the next one.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Volume of a "square"
« on: May 02, 2010, 04:27:34 pm »
I've always thought of it as one cubic urist :)
This is a hallway.  Its volume is one cubic urist.  Its length is one urist.  The pressure of the air in the hallway is 100 urists.  The temperature is 10000 urists.  It weights 100 urists.
The magma covering the floor is three hepti-urists deep.

If a dwarf came across a tiny scorpion made of living diamond, he'd nail it to a mug and call it an artifact.

And then hand it over to a noble?
...Yes, yes, of course. Perhaps it will give him good luck, so he will avoid the same unfortunate accidents as his twelve predecessors.
Were those unfortunate accidents along the lines of "Urist McNoble cancels Drink: interrupted by scorpion"?

My Cheif Medical Dracon just got into a fey mood.  he claimed a crafts-shop and immediately starts demanding body parts.

I know he's just doing the "I have no moodable skills so I'm just making some random crap." mood.  But still I find the fact that he is my only halfway to competent doc, and that he wants body parts amusing, like he wants to make a Frankenstein monster or something.
"This is a dwarven wrestler. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality."

It makes sense actually. The FB charged the expedition leader, who dodged, letting it smash into the wall and fall flat. From there it's a couple of easy shots to the brain. Yay for smart expedition leaders, I guess?
From time to time, dwarves seem just a little too smart to just be part of a computer game...
Then one walls himself in and you realize that's a rather silly thought.
Like I said, from time to time. Usually they'll happily seal themselves in the magma plumbing, yeah.

Seconding the siege weapon and Mount Rushmore ideas.

I've not had a problem with weapon traps, it's STONEFALL traps that are the problem.

I had one goblin maceman run into a trapped entrance hall, run through and trigger a good 10 stonefall traps and make it out the other side with a broken arm.
And not the arm which he used to hold his mace.

He also managed to train himself up to a MaceMASTER on all my civilians.

Maybe you had wrong rock in the traps? Honestly, now because of that science-blabber in RAW, I wouldn't be suprised if now some rocks falling from ceiling are more/less deadly than the others.

Maybe.
I'd guess it's the heavy ones which work best, like with blunt weapons.

I thought constructions break apart into their materials if you drop them?

Still, even if they do, I guess there's always obsidian-casting to load the trap.

Remember the On Break time and keep it holy.

It actually would be rather difficult to solve the wall problem. "Will this trap me if I build it" is not always straightforward, and you also have to consider multiple dwarves working at the same time. BUT I guess you could catch most of the cases with something like making dwarves build from the side they approach from.
I think the best bet there is the idea ISGC had of asking the player which side to build from. Some things are much easier to work out for humans than for computers.

Maybe the magma got sick of being used to kill elves and decided to wreck your game to make it stop.
Where'd you get that idea? Looks to me like it's taken on a new form so that it can kill each elf six times.

Not sure if it still works the same way in the new version, but in 40d you open up data\init\init.txt and look for a bit that says [INVADERS:YES]. I think you can guess what to change it to.
