An especially noteworthy feature is the clever magma-ductwork which allows molten rock to be pumped up through the statue to pour in a fiery cascade from the mouth; any captives trapped within the statue at such times are immersed in magma, and their immolation wreathes the statue's head in clouds of smoke.
Vomiting magma. This is cave adaption done right.

Machinegod, ruled by The Council of Beasts
This conjures up some interesting mental images.

I think my only civilian casualties are failed moods (only one per fortress so far) and hunters who are off on the far side of the map when goblins appear.

Clearly it's a phylactery. Don't bother giving that dwarf a tomb.

Moral of the story: somebody needs to figure out how to make gold wigs at a craftsdwarf workshop.

What...?

strands aren't badass enough?  You want gold, too?
I don't, Sif does.

Feel free to explain the benefits of

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 8-year-old kid playing DF
« on: November 07, 2009, 06:55:52 pm »
Who knows, an 8-year-old's imagination might be able to come up with ways to kill goblins that we could never have thought of.

Like what, dropping kittens on them? Do falling creatures cause damage to those they land on?

Also, hell yes to the notion of "don't underestimate children".

ACTUALLY kittens is a pretty awful way of disposing of goblins. Recently I tried to get rid of all cats, but one went and adopted one of the dwarves. I had to keep the cats away from the cave spiders you see, they were eating up my income.
So I got the cat into a 1x2 room and locked the door. Immigrants brought more cats and the immigrants were executed, their cats butchered ... but somehow they cats managed to impregnate the imprisoned one. Stickin' it under the door probably.

So this cat got kittens. The kittens and the cat sexed eachother up and they bred until there were over 20 of them. I thought that I have to get rid of these things - so I channeled into the room from above and designated a pit. I threw in a captured goblin, with the hopes that he would destroy them all.

LO AND BEHOLD he was assaulted by 20+ furious, inbred cats and kittens and they gouged out his eyes and while he killed 1 and severely wounded 2 kittens the goblin was slain and spread across the tiny room in an extremely violent fashion. To kill something with kittens is CRUEL AND UNUSUAL!
Ladies and gentlemen, we have the Death of a Thousand Cats!

Out of curiosity, is it only smelters that can have stuff added? Seems like logs -> planks would make more sense at a carpenter's workshop.

Anyone else think about giving visual interpretations to some of these?
Something like this?

Incidentially, the Jewish Bar Mitzvah (the name is slightly different for girls, Bat Mitzvah I think, I'm not jewish myself, just saying what I know) which is a coming of age ceremony and happens at age 13. Dwarves come of age at 12. Just thought I'd make that connection.
That does explain why I've never seen Pig Meat ingame.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Glass?
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:42:19 am »
While on the topic of glass, is it possible to get sand on an originally non-sand map?

i tried draining my ponds/ rivers but no sand. just wondering if there is a way,
because my current fortress has a lot of precious gems to make some nicely valued stuff

If you don't have sand, you don't have sand and there's nothing you can do to acquire glass since traders will never bring it.  If you want glass you'll have to find a new embark location or start cheating(utilities like Dtil come to mind).
Or pray that you find a decent amount of rock crystal.
