Other Games / Re: Pulsar 4x ( a aurora open source like project)
« on: May 28, 2013, 01:51:34 am »
Antagonist here.

I'm one of the admin devs of Pulsar.  I keep up with what is going on, tho its been a while since I've had time to commit anything.  Still, I'm more than willing to do some admin work for my beloved project so if anyone wants to take a look at the code and/or help out, they are more than welcome to PM me their details (github account and skype name) and I can add them.

The main reason for this project existing is that Steve has decided to continue with his VB6 codebase.  While he has managed amazing things with it, the majority of the speed issues and bugs with Aurora can be directly blamed on the VB+Access DB combo he currently uses.  He has stated that he will one day start work on Aurora 2 in C#, but who knows when this will be.  That is where we come in, trying to get something decent in a little earlier.  We have Steve's blessing and encouragement to do this.

As mentioned, this project is in C#, which has been interesting so far. We are aiming for cross-platform compatibility which means this should target windows, linux and mac. We've attemped UI design in winforms as well as GTK# and I can't say I'm happy with either libraries. Anyone with applicable UI experience is more than welcome to apply since the last person responsible for it went dark.  I do agree though that the UI is going to be one of the more important parts of a game like this to avoid the usability issues both DF and Aurora suffers.

I'm PRETTY sure they'll announce or even hint if there was gonna be a new world.

Being a new player and all, it would suit me best, but still, I doubt it.

This is just a crash and its a Sunday so noone around to restart it I suppose.

Just as a note, I'm stuck with RF's 30k worth in building tools, but which grants me 5x building speed and so 20% material usage.

If anyone needs anything built, lemme know.  Prices is $200 per tick donatable to RF for his crane rental and whatever a fair wage is for me.

By that logic a female virgin(maiden?) dwarf beard should provide adamantine levels of protection.

Hmmm....

Personally I feel the 'heat' of your crimes should lower with passing time.

A day old murder likely has the whole department in a frenzy, but a year old murder with no leads would be lucky if it still has anyone actively investigating it.

Of course, murder will take MUCH longer for the 'heat' to die down than say vandalism.

The crimes themselves tho will stay on record, assuming they aren't... lost somehow, and your members will get charged with ALL of them if they get caught.

In short, I think this situation is abit rediculous from a gameplay standpoint.

To be honest most of the code should be in data files, like DF raws.

The codebase needs a refactoring, but then again... we don't have that many devs.

The choice is whether we need to spend hours on hours on refactoring the code and effectively getting back to the same point we are right now, or spend that time adding new features on admittedly buggy code.  So far the latter has been happenning.

But for an adult, you pretty much need a prolonged battering of the head to cause non-fatal brain damage. Lots of boxers for example develop spasming conditions after taking too many punches. If you managed to cause permanent brain damage in one sitting and not kill somebody, it would almost certainly be from oxygen deprivation or nitrogen bubbles.

I honestly really like that.  Any single heavy brain damage is more often than not fatal, but wrestlers or hammerers with bad luck and great perseverence will tend to develop... quirks...

There IS a Sourceforge feature requests tracker.
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=198808&atid=966962

Dunno if its suited for this and easy to browse, but it exists and we can use it.  At the very least we should start using the bug tracker, or else track all the reported bugs somehow as well.

The random encounters I consider mostly as 'spice'.  Should be rare enough not to affect much, but should happen at least once or twice a game.  Maybe RARELY out jogging in the park, but more likely in a CEO house being bribed or at the HQ being briefed.

Opportunistic PCs would much rather use my suggested infiltration action.  No waiting, though you will have a site to move through to get to the target.  Opportunistic encounters would be much easier of course, but impractical to grind, especially if the more L+ a representative body becomes, the less C+'s and the more L+'s you will encounter.

The infiltration option is primarily for late-game.  The issues and population already needs to be pretty liberal for you to stand a good chance to have a conservative replaced with a liberal, and you need to be fairly prepared to deal with the increasingly hardcore bodyguards that successive assaults will result.  Do this enough and some might start resigning out of fear, accelerating a win further.

Without this, you need to wait possibly years for the political situation to change, even with the population fully convinced and with you armed enough to take on an army.

How about College Students eventually getting real jobs?

Despite what we might think, you can't stay in college forever...
Unless you become a professor...

It is all part of the "Sleepers upgrade" aspect. Since it isn't only College students who eventually get jobs.

Likewise, its also possible for people to lose jobs?  That Arch-Conservative Radio Personality might not be able to keep a hold on his job so easy once he starts spouting liberal propaganda, especially if people stop listening to the radio entirely.  And your CEO might also have more trouble keeping his position once laws become more anti-corporate.

Possibly sleeper skills could affect this?

Just reread Neonivik's post and noticed he said something similiar to me.
