DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk #12: Feedback v2

Dwarves should play darts in the tavern, and this should actually train throwing. (my apologies if this actually comes up later in the talk...I am in the middle of it right now)

My suggestion: Find yourself a nice volcano and build your fort in the magma pipe.  I've done this, though I made everything out of constructed metal and glass instead of using the cast obsidian method, and the whole fort wasn't in the pipe (I was lazy). While the pipe is drained, dig vents sideways to the outside of your volcano and floodgates to control them.  That way you can flood the world with magma from your pipe whenever you like as well as having a well defended fort.

DF General Discussion / Re: The Argument For Elves
« on: October 28, 2010, 01:50:54 pm »
I have no problem with the elves.  They sell me cloth, which my dwarves use to make clothing...which we sell for more cloth.

The clothiers stay busy and someday once they start wearing their replacement clothes I'll be able to have a well-dressed set of dwarves.

This is my opinion of elves.  They make good trading partners (especially when bringing animals), have some weird and creepy ethics, but as long as they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone.

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress anthem
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:38:32 pm »
A few days ago I came up with this anthem for minecraft.  Now, I like minecraft, but DF deserves an anthem too, ripped off of something a bit more dwarfy than America the Beautiful, which is fine for minecraft's expansive landscapes but too peaceful for df.  So to continue on the theme:

The Blood-spattered Hammer

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose strong swipes and bashes through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly swinging.
By the magma's red glare, goblins bursting in air,
Gave proof through the seige that Urist was still there;
O! say does that blood-spattered hammer yet wave,
O'er the fort of the free and burrows of the brave?

Written after a bookkeeper, Francis Keyscotts watched the successful defense of his fort from a goblin seige by a lone legendary hammerdwarf, Urist.

Edit: constructive criticism is welcome, some of the verses could use a little work

DF General Discussion / Re: Will we defend the Toady?

I'm a fan of minecraft, but DF is my first love.  The community over at minecraft makes me appreciate the DF community all  the more.  As others have said, I think the game itself is simply too complicated to attract the usual compliment of internet morons.

The most hilarious complaint I read on the minecraft forums was someone complaining about Notch spending time to add a (seemingly) redundant rock type for the upcoming update.  Really, you are complaining about a redundant rock type?  Stay away from DF, we have dozens of rock types with no functional differences, and we LIKE IT!

And Toady has my trained-attack-carp-onna-stick!

:(:"Quit whining, Jimmy, and eat your fair maiden."
:o:"NOBODY UNDERSTANDS ME!!!" (Locks self in room, starts blasting hymns from the stereo)
:(:"(Sob) Where did I go wrong, Vlad?"

Shades (heh) of Carpe Jugulum, which had some similarly rebellious vampires.

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress: The Development Page

I knew someone would bring up the "It's too modern" angle, and it's not entirely off the mark.  I think that one overlooked reason that recreational use of drugs was less in the past is because most areas only had a few native drugs, and those were better integrated into the culture.  So the Greeks and Romans had alcohol and opium, north Americans had peyote and tobacco, ect.

Anyway, from a game perspective instead of "Pharmacy" you might want "Alchemist" or "Medicine Dwarf" or "Herbologist" or what have you (I think alchemist sounds the most dwarfy).  Royal physician is also a distinct possiblity.  It's definitely the case that in the early middle ages there were people who dealt in all sorts of strange and possibly medicinal concoctions.

Come to think of it, you could add in the "medical" raws instructions to use potions that don't actually help the disease...for added historical realism, although I am not sure how fun it would be to have your doctors send off for hemlock steeped in mercury to treat goiter (or what have you).

Another worthwhile thing would be societal or religious ethics prohibiting the use of potions with certain status effects.

Well, what's wrong with both?

You could have a toggle that makes a "coffee" drug open to whoever wants some, and having powerful drugs that have potentially lethal side-effects under strict control over when they are used.

You only need to restrict access to the stuff that you, personally, feel are important enough to reglate.  If you just don't care, you can mass-forbid or leave totally unregulated whatever you want, while letting the control freaks micromanage to the n-th degree.

This.  You should have a Pharmacy building which lets you toggle substances between "general use" and "prescription only" with maybe a "medical use" option as well--kind of like the Economic Stones Mod allows prohibition of certain building materials.  If you want your dwarves to have free reign to dope up on whatever, just don't build the pharmacy.  Bonus points if the pharmacy is a zone like the hospital, needing a chests, tables, and chairs.  More bonus points if "medical use" parameters are defined in the drug raws.

If you can get it to work, carve longcat into the spire and throw kittens off the top.

I'm going with magic, because it's hard to imagine there's enough energy floating around from geothermal or geophagal sources to maintain that kind of biomass.  So:  DF world is permeated by a magical energy field, which interacts strongly with certain types of matter, breaking chemical bonds and so on.  Various fungi and whatnot can channel this energy to break bonds of various substances and run their metabolism.  The field is stronger at certain distances from the core of DF world, due to...umm...the quantum.  In these areas the field slowly wears away at the rock's chemical structure, creating extensive caverns.

The previous posters are absolutely right...DF is a tool for creating art*.  I get exactly the same feeling building a fortress as I do painting.

*A tool for creating art could also itself be art, depending on the tool

No, I mean the spelling "dwarves" instead of "dwarfs", which was almost unheard of before Tolkien.  See also elves and elfs.

Forget the dwarves!  we need this stuff so we can remove it from cats.  Spay and neuter your pets folks.  Dwarves can keep reproducing by spores for all I care.

My female dwarves have flame wars (also note that while Tolkien may or may not have bequeathed bearded females to "the standard issue fantasy dwarf," he certainly provided them with V's).
