DF Gameplay Questions / Layering Armor issues

So I am trying to layer my dwarves with the following armor in this order (I am making sure they equip each item first before they move to the next):
However, I hit a snag when I am equipping the headgear. They equip the cap, and once they all have it on (I confirm this) I tell them to equip the Copper Helmet. They drop the cap and go grab the helmet. Why exactly are they dropping the cap? I don't get it. As far as I know headgear layering can go: Cap; Cap; Helmet; Hood

I might be able to be convinced to come back to this game.... I played it back in world 2. It was fun but the community was too small at the time and schoolwork took over.

Does anyone mind if I join? I had a very bad history on the BS12 server that led to multiple bans... and I don't want to join a new server and get shunned for that.

It's a extremely fun game... until 24-48 hours pass and you have done everything you can do with the game mechanics. Then 72-168 hours pass and all the sudden the RP is stale.
