General Discussion / Re: Occupying Wallstreet
« on: October 04, 2011, 05:25:17 am »
What's sad, is I don't think those stories will sway many people.  I really don't know if any more awareness can be raised about how bad things are.  There are some privileged youth who might not know yet... but most people already do and have already decided whether they care or not.

I look out my window and see starving children on the street. Two years ago someone I knew was gunned down by a politician's private army. Our forests are rapidly disappearing due to private mining and logging concerns.

Trust me, you don't have it as bad as you think.

I dislike the 1% on a personal level.

Goblins have naturally puce hair. They're not hideous, they're FABULOUS.

Pacts with demons? That's what I've always thought anyway.

That might have worked in 40d, but since demons nowadays just kinda go ahead and take over things without asking, it's less compatible.

DF General Discussion / Goblin Immortality (Fluff Discussion)

Elves are racist (occasionally) isolationist jerks. Goblins are the major open society in DF, accepting any race that they can kidnap. Goblins like to impale the corpses of their defeated enemies on pikes. Elves like to eat their defeated enemies.

Both of these races live forever.

Now, the Elven immortality thing is pretty easy to understand - they're probably strongly influenced by J.R.R Tolkien's elves, except with way worse technology and fighting ability.

What about Goblins, though? Are they "corrupted" elves like in the Lord of the Rings' universe? Are they simply a separate race that is functionally immortal? And what, if any, connection, might their culture have to do with their immortality?

This is just for fun of course. What do you guys think?

I think I said it in another thread, but chimps, bottlenose dolphins, and octopi, due to their intelligence, are among the creatures that have the actual capacity for evil our definition of it at least.

It's chimps and bottlenose dolphins that regularly engage in evil though. Or as Kael might put it, "eternal fuckery".

Octopi are just tricky jerks.

Wooden armor, yeah...  They were just the most straightforward to mod.  Dwarves with no breeding would probably do better, but they may need immortality as well.

Well, it depends on how close Tevish Szat wants to stick to vanilla. Goblins are immortal already, and they don't breed, plus their numbers would be supported by kidnapping. Of course then you'd end up with all-human Goblin civs as already happens in vanilla.

Or maybe a rubbing of a stone relief on a wall, or a mural on an ancient tomb.

Hmm-hmm, I see...  So you need enough mythical creatures to kill the civs, and enough civs to kill the myths.  Sounds like you're boned, or you need an alternative method of death.  Modding would be easy enough - mod elves not to breed.  The other civs kill the myths, then they kill each other, and the elves slowly die one by one over a lengthy time.  Ideally.  In practice, you'd probably have one super-powered elf that would defeat the entire world due to eons of training.

If you mod elves to be unable to breed, they'll probably be wiped out by the first rampaging death titan that came their way, or another civ making war on them though.

Humans are dolphins with opposable thumbs.

We're a race partly composed of sex-crazed vicious baby murderers that enjoy the pain of others?

With opposable thumbs?

Okay I think you have something there...

Looking at the wiki, you need for all civilizations to end, yes?  This could hopefully be achieved with a low pop number and a high megebeast number, banking on them to war and the beasts to kill them as well.  The wiki claims that the Age of Death only cares about civilizations.

You'll probably still end up with an Age of [Megabeast] or Age of [Megabeast Species] though. The wiki lies about a lot of things.

Like if one partner is critically injured the other partner decides what should be done,

Couldn't the same be accomplished with a living will?

To answer that I'm just gonna quote you:

How far we have fallen if such a contrivance is now necessary.

In fact, every time you bring up a social institution, I'm going to quote this particular line.

Speaking of the intelligence of species, I'm convinced that of the animals that are close to people (relatively), chimpanzees and bottlenose dolphins are the only ones capable of evil.

They know what they're doing. They know it.

I have discovered I enjoy a certain type of music called "Dubstep" I was introduced to by some friends. But it's so outside my musical comfort zone that it's more like I hate that I like it.

You're probably going to hate that you like this then.

Depends, I'm pretty sure he'd love Feanor.

I like statues.

And if that's a Cave Story statue, I like it even more.
