General Discussion / Re: The unhealthy cynics were right all along.

I personally prefer to think that we humans are simply too hardcore to get taken out by environmental change.

Do you realize how little water is bound up in the ice caps? Off the top of my head, I believe that it's something like 5% of the earth's total water. The desalinization won't decrease salt levels that significantly.

Are you sure about this? My high school science is sketchy, so I was just repeating something I'd read somewhere. 5% seems a bit low, though.

I dunno, if they're angry enough, the revolution will take a long time to die. Besides I'm pretty sure that they're revolting because they're tired and disillusioned.

I've never seen an attempt at "preemptive peacekeeping".
Every form of oppression can be rationalized as "preemptive peacekeeping.

also, [refrains from remark about Bush administration]

I will admit, I was baiting that one.

My country had martial law declared waaaaaaay back, about thirty years ago. The dictator (Ferdinand Marcos, you may remember him) rationalized it as, exactly, preemptive peacekeeping. I've never seen anyone say that and mean it, though.

Probably because it can't happen if we mean to stay ethical.

Life Advice / Re: How to get a girlfriend
« on: August 07, 2009, 03:58:18 am »
What's the dating scene like in Russia anyhow?

Tempted to make a "Soviet Russia" joke, but it would be in poor taste.

You often find girls in unexpected places

What, like under a rock? :D

As trite as it sounds, "be yourself" is sound advice. Of course I'm not sure what I'm doing giving advice to a boy about how to get a girlfriend, since it would make more sense for other boys/men to do that, but I hope my perspective helped! ;D

If the chunk of ice *is* floating, then it will be displacing water equal to its mass. Doesn't matter if it's above or below the water line when it does that, and melting will change even less than it might have otherwise.

I hate having arguments with people about this. They're always like "if the ice caps melt, there'll be more water in the ocean!" and I'm all like "they're in the bloody ocean already, how is there gonna be 'more'?"

That aside, isn't the actual problem of the ice caps melting the sudden desalinization of normally salty water? As far as I know, that would seriously wreck ocean life.

What, you mean like

"Snang Incestlocked has been ecstatic lately. He watched dwarves behaving like idiots recently."

If you only have one entrance, I suggest you build a pair of walls to force the invaders down a specific path. Line that path with traps. Then open the entrance.

(This'd work better if you had cage traps, though)

DF Suggestions / Re: Drafting Retired Adventurers in Fortress
« on: August 07, 2009, 03:31:30 am »
Adventurers are also sentenced to death... they just have the option of stretching it out indefinitely.
Perhaps there could be a mirror option to this one, though, "send dwarf into the world," which turns one of the dwarves in your fortress into an adventurer? One of the nobles could grant it. You could even send up to five companions or pets off with them. Of course, this would probably have to wait until fortress skills become meaningful in adventurer mode...
It would probably also have to have some limitation to keep people from exploiting it to get rid of excess immigrants... although giving it to a higher-ranking noble would probably work, since by the time the player gets one of those they probably aren't worried about immigrants as much anyway. It could be limited to once per season or year or somesuch, too.
[ August 23, 2006: Message edited by: Aquillion ]

Maybe trade could work towards that function?

Like, you send a caravan with guards and traders to the Mountainhomes or to human towns; they pick up experience and bring back goods. That way sending dwarves out has a use.

Life Advice / Re: Reasons for Remembering
« on: August 07, 2009, 03:26:37 am »
Memory is totally random. I still remember my seatmate from Grade 1 but can't remember what in the name of god I was supposed to review for my midterms next week.

As to dreams, I had a dream about pizza after eating pizza a few days before. What I mean to say is, the dream trigger can be displaced really far from the actual dream.

I think he means he embarked on a human town and wants to kill them.

Oh. Well in that case, you could collapse the entire town via mining and channeling.

DF General Discussion / Re: Fat Dwarfs
« on: August 06, 2009, 11:01:03 pm »
Ah man, I'm neurotic and possessive about my fortress already, now I got to make sure they are all thin and fit?

Anyways... I predict at least one DF player is going to get their entire fortress fat so they can make a soap industry from Dwarves.

It took 9 replies before it went somewhere horrific.

You gotta love Dwarf Fortress.

(Can you imagine an entire fortress built out of the rendered fat of dwarves?) :-X
Can you build an entire fortress out of the rendered fat of anything yet? If so I think I found a new challenge.
Lard Fortress.

Note: I never use soapmakers for well... Soap. So I have no clue what they're capable of.

Well, you could build buildings out of charcoal, too.

Lard Fortress: it's fat-riffic!

DF General Discussion / Re: Legendary cougars
« on: August 06, 2009, 10:58:25 pm »
Has anyone else noticed that perhaps nine-tenths of all animal legends are cougars, and most of the rest are wolves and alligators?

Any thoughts on how I could go about ensuring that the beasts that prowl my world's nightmares have a bit more varied? I'm thinking of maybe editing the entity files to make civs settle more diverse terrain in the hopes that the world-gen fight simulator will consider some stranger foes.

Cougars and wolves are common, which increases the chance that they'll murder people. Maybe you could change the biomes of creatures you want to legendify.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Draw your adventures

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I suck at both drawing and writing, but hopefully it gets the point across. This actually happened in adventure mode. A dragon was spawned in a cave literally 10 seconds to the north of a Dwarven Mountainhome, and a magma pipe. Every day a few dwarfs would go in parties to try and kill it. One day, a guard named Likost went to test his luck, but when he attacked it, it jumped into the magma. Likost, being the crazy-ass Gandalf wannabe he is, jumped in after it.

Of course, we assume that they continue their battle at the center of the earth, until such time that Likost slays the beast and is reborn as Urist the White.

YOU SHALL NOT gblarg

Also, here's what happened with the zombie Titan

You can cause them to invade you by bothering their merchants, but you can't invade them in return, if that's what you mean (from what I understand that will become possible in the future, but not now). As far as inciting war between two other civilizations, you can't do that by any method I know of.
Huh, well darn. I guess I'll just have to drown a few merchants huh?

Try stealing their stuff, it should tick them off.
