I want a proper King, and for that I need a duke and apparantly around 140 dwarf population. I have 100 dwarves right now and already my machine is running slowly. My newest idea; CAGE THEM. If I drafted unimportant (aka unlegendary) members of the my fort and put them in a cage trap filled room and caused a minor cave-in, could I conceivably capture dozens of dwarves in cages? Would they still be happy? Could I feed them and maintain them? I'm going to be running a test on my fishermen; the fish have been fished to extinction and their non-stop partying is harming my FPS; I'll see how it goes.

There is nothing minor about cave-ins.  :D

There are a LOT of ways in which you should treat girls differently than your guy friends, if you want them to date you. A lot.

You mean like asking them out?  ;D

I'm beginning to suspect that there's a lot of culture clash going on here, since everyone has different advice.

France had the right idea when they declared Scientology a cult.
Do cults get different legal treatment than any other religion? I can only imagine they do. As creepy and bad as scientology is, the government having the authority to declare one religion legitimate and another illegitimate is far, far worse and scarier.

Wasn't because they were a cult, but because they were a dangerous cult whose intent is to exploit its followers.

I even posted up a comment about it in a thread, about the inhumanity of slaughtering an aeons old goblin just because I could, and then beating his inexhaustibly wise friend over the head with it until he bled out.

NOW DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE?

Inhumanity.

Inhumanity.

Inhumanity?!

WE. ARE. DWAAAAAAAAARVES!!!

... ahem.

I remember reading something about how the foundations of scientology were laid in a bar, while L. Ron Hubbard was drinking with some writer friends. And probably high on heroin.

The way I heard it, Hubbard convinced some drunkards that his Sci-Fi books were real.

No, Xenu the god-king is real! [/sarcasm]

France had the right idea when they declared Scientology a cult.

Well, apparently by 2030ish google will actually be self aware. It won't have any desires, so being self aware isn't much good to it, but it will be nontheless. This isn't just a crackpot theory, a load of lead AI geeks are putting their heads into this and coming to the same conclusion.

Aaaaaand cue Skynet.

More music? Gladly!

For further adventures at sea.
Yes, I realize it's from another game, but... appropriate!

The only way to cave-in now is to intentionally separate a ceiling or floor via channeling or deconstruction.

Last time I tried that it fell six z-levels down my mining shaft and killed almost all my miners. Fun!

As far as actually getting legendary things into the nobles room, chances are 90% of created artifacts will be useless. Of the remaining 10%, such things as doors, tables, chairs, statues, and other things that can be "built", you would "build" that door/chair/whatever and select that particular artifact. Then the dwarf would build it. The remaining 2% of things that are useful are things like weapons and armor, and as far as forcing a dwarf to use artifact arms and armor... I got nothing.

As to forcing dwarves to use artifact arms and armor...

Well, you could always use the method described in the wiki. Set the dwarf you want to wear/wield the artifact to Unarmed/Clothes levels of weapon and armor. After that forbid everything in the weapons pile except the one you want her to wield, and do the same for a set of armor. Then set the dwarf to whatever weapon you want and the armor level of your desired armor. Voila!

But it's tedious so I've never personally tried it.

Three overlapping ballistae pointing at an enemy siege will cause a lot of grief.  ;D

That said, you should set the ones that can't hit anything to inactive.

Well I do live by a canyon, and a coyote was walking around my cul de sac, I live in southern california, so I have no bloody Idea what it is.

I've got cats, and they eat anything. Maybe it's a feral.

Or the coyote, which would make sense.

and alot of the guys, myself included, pitched in all our advice and skills to try and get him to be a date-able person, and then we pitched all our effort towards getting him to play the field and go date a different girl.

You know, I get the impression that that wasn't what he needed.

Sounds like he had serious problems aside from "can't get a date".

He sounds like he was creepy and obsessive. I hate guys like that.  >:(

Also I just reread sonerohi's post.
You were protecting him and he tried to stab you for it?
God, that makes my overmanly male friends (and not-friends) seem almost normal.

I understand that from the sounds of it, he was mighty creepy, but be a bit more sensitive Vester. The minds of young people can be warped considerably through bad parenting, social expectations, bullying, and alot of other stuff.

Well, yeah, I'm not dismissing that he had problems, I was just saying what he sounded like. Also, he was in grade school, so I'm willing to bet he wasn't emotionally ready for much. (depends on when in grade school this was). Sorry if I came off as being mean.

How to get a meaningful relationship with a girl:

  • Stop trying so hard. Girls hang out the same place as other people, so as long as you meet people, you're all set, in theory. Besides, you run the risk of forming weird relationships when you meet people for that explicit purpose instead of getting to know them as people first. Leading me to:
  • Treat them like real people, as you would your guy friends. Treating women as some sort of special-case scenario (i.e. "men are normal, women are these weird creatures") just ends with you having a warped view of how gender works, and must REALLY suck if you're bisexual.
  • Speaking of which, don't rely on any stupid tricks or generalizations or "game plans" that people throw at you, here or elsewhere. People are weird and sort of varied. Not all girls are easily impressed by jewelry and pick-up lines or whatever, and generalizing a lot is likely to get a lot of girls thinking that you don't care about them as individuals, and honestly, if someone treats them that way, they're probably right. This kind of stuff might be good for picking up random chicks at bars, but I take it that's not the goal here.

G-flex is right. We're human too, for god's sake. You should make friends and meet people, not worry about finding a girlfriend because it's "cool". I say this because you seem to be a little stressed about this. Don't worry, relax, and let things happen. As they happen.

Although I want to clarify when he says "treating girls as you would your guy friends". I think he means to relax when you're around them and don't treat them any differently, which is a good idea. But I have to bring up that making jokes about penises/farts/whatever it is guys think are funny at that age? Bad idea. Although you might meet a girl with the same sense of humor, which is rare.
