It's also a shame that DT can read only dwarves, and if you are going to play any other civ, tough luck.
Correct me if I'm wrong, this is based on what was seen in Adventure Mode.

General Discussion / Most awkward/hilarious sex scenes in books
« on: November 17, 2010, 11:50:54 am »
I've recently read Cryptonomicon and just couldn't get THAT scene out of my head for a strange reason. I won't quote it here and spoil some people 900 or something pages of getting there, but I would like to start a thread to find the contender to the spot mentioned in the title.

Also, speaking of Cryptonomicon, there are many other hilarious sex-related themes in Cryptonomicon which are equally hilarious, but not as awkward as the cryptically aforementioned scene, which some people dislike because of their length and no apparent relation to the plot, but they, and other semi-plot related multiple page spanning bonuses, are what made the book for me.

Do DF hydrae have crazy-fast wound regeneration like in the Greek myth?

Not at all

Man, I sure wish Toady put a bunch of people saying "don't travel alone at night or the bogeymen will get you" in the game. :x
Why would that be necessary? It should be common knowledge in-game. That would be like if you said "Don't jump out into the freeway" to random people that you met. It's good advice, but people should already know it. (The player may not, but that is rectified quickly!)
Actually several peasants HAVE told me not to travel at night, as bogeymen would come after me.
But the point is  they don't say *alone*.

I wish for a way of having a location marked out when your traveling. Having to move over several area's before finding the right one is rather cumbersome.
Actually, If you're standing on the world map tile of your designated location, you can see where it is exactly on the travel map by Q + z.

Your mouse probably slipped when you pressed "modify" and you pressed "quote". Happens to the best of us.

Also, I would like to add this to the suggestion:

When you press 'Q'uests and then 's'ites in Adventure Mode, you get a list of all the sites you know about and can have their location and it gets really messy navigating through hundreds of known sites which aren't really sorted to find the capital Burnedcogs to ask
the law-giver there to give you a serious quest (just an example). It would be really nice to sort it by type of settlements/caves/shrines etc and also alphabetically.

DF General Discussion / How is the sparring in .17?
« on: November 13, 2010, 01:01:02 pm »
After playing adventure mode almost non-stop since release, I've noticed how deadly everyone became with aimed attacks. When a well aimed opportunity punch to the head can break the skull and rip the brain apart, how is the sparring in fortress mode?

Let them surround you, and even the most skilled fighter, singlehandedly slaying megabeasts on left and right will get overexerted, pass-out and be torn to shreds by these little guys.

I don't understand the big deal about bogeymen. The biggest trouble I faced, is 20-30 goblin patrols, when you're a legendary hero with 19 companions setting out of a castle to defeat a glacier titan in the far far northern glaciers, a 20 tiles after you set out of the castle, they ambush you and kill 15 companions and cripple to uselessness the other 4 while you have to kill around 80% of the goblins yourself. And Armok forbid you sleep in the wilderness, with a full squad of supposedly trained soldiers! They kill 10 of the companions before you've got enough turns to stand up and let the stun go away.
And after like 40 ambushes, it seems that the invisible Dark Fortress (reason is known) has an infinite supply of goblins, and so is the general's castle, the human/goblin soldiers never end and they are just created from thin air when you enter the castle/interact with them.

And the creature lairs are about the safest place to be when you're far away from civilization.

Hydra? I had to chop all seven heads off to kill it, while it was distracted by my "companions" (read: goblin ambush fodder).

On that note, did you notice how weak and useless the soldiers became? Take 20 of them, go for a while, you get ambushed by 20-30 goblins and you're lucky if anyone of your's survives, let alone not horribly mutilated beyond repair and I'm not even speaking about still having his weapon...

.17 is fucking brutal (and I like it).

Oh boy. What fun it is.

Started as human peasant in a village. Talked to a fellow farmer, he mocked me, "An adventurer? YOU?!! Don't be silly, and where did you get that old sword, anyway? There is no way you could afford one with our meager pay!" , and I said to him "I'll show you what I can do! Give me something to do!". He looked at me mockingly and said "Well, remember that troublesome brigand that attacks our village all the time? It would be a lot easier, if someone could get rid of him. You know where he lives. If you want to prove your worth go kill him."
I set out of the village without thinking twice. Amazing! The day pasts so fast while you're traveling. I've been told horrible stories about a bogeyman traveling the wilds at night and killing every human he sees, so I decided to stop near a small village with a clear overpopulation problem and asked the Siege Engineer who strangely lived there to stay the night at his house (which he shared with 23 other villagers). He welcomed me with great pleasure and I think I got along with other residents. I slept till dawn and set off, as I didn't want to wake them up. About 8 hours into my travels, a goblin patrol ambushed me. It was an axeman and a crossbowman. I disabled the Axeman's Axe holding hand and stabbed him in the lower body several time and left him to drown in his blow while deflecting silver bolts from the troublesome goblin, quite a distance away. He managed to hit me in my left lower leg and I didn't hesitate, I pulled out the bolt and charged into the goblin before he got a chance to reload. I quickly severed both of his hands, before noticing the Axeman was dragging himself away. I started returning to the Axeman and the Crossbowman started running away. Barely caught him. The Axeman moved only by a little when I returned and I tried to chop his head off, but he died from blood loss far too soon.
I have a leg cut open and I'm nearly at my destination. I don't know if the wound will heal itself and what to expect in the end of my trek. Glory to Armok.

EDIT: Well. Losing is fun.  ;)

If you cant see what it is, its a party consisting of a dwarf, a goblin and an elf, standing in a ruined town. The dwarf is dressed in a dwarven bronze armor and the goblin is holding his characteristic iron mask. THe elf is wearing elven armor.

But, but, isn't elven armour made of wood? *looks at picture again* That has got to be terribly uncomfortable. Also, splinters.

There is also rope reed.

Also, couldn't help but notice she had only one arrow.
