DF Modding / Re: Automaton Fortress (1.1)

I saw this coming...  ;D I'll add it if they have a good use. Perhaps just for humor?

EDIT: I am going to work on the oil being poisonous when I get some ideas from the community. So far, I think nausea, dizziness, coughing and vomiting blood should be in.

According to the all-knowing all-seeing eye of wikipedia, castor oil causes diarrhea and vomiting.  It shouldn't be fatal though.

Ricin - which is very toxic - is a byproduct of castor oil production.

So what are they using the Castor Oil for game-wise, and what is it you intend to represent them using it for?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Screw ropes and ladders! Give it to us!

Anything that has the intelligent or canlearn token, and has hands should be able to climb these ropes too. Otherwise you have yourself a completely inpenetrable front door, well... above door.

Wouldn't that preclude monkeys?  It would probably be enough to say they must have the ability to [grasp].

Now for some crimes that actually are heinous, I found this druid who basically had had his whole family killed by a minotaur. The funny thing is that beside the druid's family members, the minotaur had only a few other kills. I felt so bad for him that, despite him being a filthy elf, I decided to go hunt the thing down. Managed to snap its neck with novice wrestling.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Don't feel too bad, they were all the same person.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fire Imps I hate thee
« on: December 10, 2009, 12:37:44 pm »
Losing is fun!

I was looking for an excuse to post what happened in my fort last night, but that tragedy puts mine to shame.

As for the imps themselves, I finally finished them off with my mighty force of wrestlers.  One did die (a new recruit - custom title "fresh meat") but the wrestlers handled the imps well overall.  Once a dwarf gets his hands on the little bastard's throat they can't put out anymore fireballs - or if a legendary gets his hands on the imp it can longer breathe, move it's limbs, or do anything but pray for the sweet release of death.

I suppose I will mention what happened though...

One day the dwarves of the mountainhomes came to my fort and made a heart wrenching plea.  They spoke of all the poor orphan children and how their lives would be made more bearable if only they had toys to play with.  My mayor was moved deeply... to get another barrel of whiskey.  The liaison then indicated that they would pay the maximum possible amount for any toys produced when they returned the next year.  Thus did the dwarves set to producing a mighty assortment of wonderous toys. (cheap junk)

One year later, the dwarven caravan arrived - ready to collect the toys that would bring 'joy' to orphans everywhere.  The dry grass crinkled beneath their wagon wheels and they sang a merry dwarven travel song.  And then the fireball struck.  The first wagon caught flame immediately, and the fire spread through the grass beneath their feet like... wildfire.  The world burned and the flames spread until there was naught but ash and smoking corpses.  One lone mule survived, his rear legs burned to the bone.  He was driven to madness by pain and carnage. (He may still be alive)

The dwarves were saddened, of course, by the terrible loss of profits.  But also because Urist McLumberdwarf had been especially industrious.  He had cut down every tree in the entire forest - but the haulers were to busy (and frankly too scared of the vile imps) to collect them.  Much were the imps cursed for the lack of beds and barrels in later seasons.

I think it's a hamster face actually, or at least much closer to a hamster than anything cat-like.

DF Modding / Re: Nothing I do will make Hippos become the new dwarves!

After some testing - the problem in fortress mode seems to be caused by swims_innate.  They path into the water, but then the basic dwarf mode AI kicks in and they decide that being in the water is bad and run away.  Then of course they make a new path, right back through the water.

DF Modding / Re: So why is this crashing worldgen?
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:23:00 pm »
Ok, so if I change the creature associated with the entity from halfling to dwarf world gen succeeds.

EDIT:

Halflings have no body.  Doh.

It may still be worth patching errors in the log, deleting the log, and genning again until you don't get any errors.

I did.  No error file is generated at all at this point.

« on: December 08, 2009, 01:36:31 pm »
Most of the custom civs I added have that untokenized translation: line with no apparent problem.

Looking through the error log... I had a lot of errors - but mostly with the civs that were working fine.  The only error it shows with the halflings is my mispelling of "modifer" - an error they had in common with many of the other entities.

DF Modding / So why is this crashing worldgen? (resolved)
« on: December 08, 2009, 11:10:42 am »
I've managed to narrow down the source of my world gen crash to this entity file.  Removing the entity file (and deleting the objects folder etc) makes the game not crash during world gen.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: After the age of heroes...
« on: December 05, 2009, 01:30:04 pm »
I must test what happens when everything everywhere dies.
I'll gen a pocket world and use an adventurer to kill everyone.

Kill the humans first - I seem to remember mention of an "Age of Fantasy" if you've only got elves, dwarves, and the like running about.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Corpse in water make fish spawn?
« on: November 29, 2009, 02:01:31 am »
Yeah, I had a map where I was sending 70 reclaim marksdwarves after carp and other fish,

every time one died, they all tantrum spiraled, and died rapidly. Hundreds of bats would start flying around.

Don't know why bats though

That happens everytime batman gains experience.

Don't forget that incident with the cabinet: it was a heavy, blunt object -- probably counts as a hammer.

I'm pretty sure the game registers that as unarmed combat. Which is ridiculous.

You know, I assumed that was just you being colorful with your description.  I was not aware it was actually possible to beat someone to death with furniture in DF.

I just read the thread in one sitting.  I should probably sleep now - being that's it's almost 9:00 AM. (I don't recall when I started reading...)
