DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread

Is it safe to transfer either goblins or untame animals from cage to cage as if they were tame animals?

I've been catching goblin thieves en masse with my cage traps and I would like to set up some live training for my marksman. I feel it would be a lot easier to just throw down one cage, transfer like 10-15 goblins into that single cage, link it up, pull the lever and fire away until all 10-15 goblins are dead. Usually, I manually place and link up each cage individually because I'm always afraid that trying to move a goblin from one cage to the next will set him free.

Okay. Other than that, I'm going to assume I am doing everything right, I suppose.

I only reduced the number because I heard that if the number isn't met, then nobody in the squad trains. Well, I guess that was wrong

You haven't really described the problem :) so I don't know what to tell you.

If you  leave the number training at the default "10" then it means everyone in the squad will train, whether the squad is 1 dwarf or 10. They will take time off to eat, sleep, etc. but will never perform any civilian duties while the squad is active.

If you change the number to less than the size of the squad, then it means some of the dwarves will be off-duty at any given time and will resume their civilian duties. If they are not Novice in a military skill and/or a civilian skill, then they will get a bad thought when they go on/off duty.

Well, I guess I should have been more clear: I don't want them to have off time. Ideally, they would just train all day, and only stop for a drink/food/sleep/injury. No matter what configuration I set up my alerts/schedules or whatever, I still get half or so of the dwarves just standing around doing nothing.

Is it even possible to have them train round the clock?

So, what exactly should I do then? I have no idea how to get them to work right...  :(

Don't set your number training to 1; leave it at 2 or higher (I leave it at 10 personally).
If only 1 dwarf is training, he/she will not have a sparring partner.

So what schedule is most effective? I have generally used larger squads (7-10) dwarves, and put them onto the default "Active/Training" alert thats already in the military interface. Sometimes, I switch the order to "Train, 1 minimum" or something like that. Usually when I do that, I have about half of the soldiers doing Indiv. Combat Drills, and the other half with "No Job," sitting in my meeting hall.

I don't think I have ever seen them spar. Occasionally, they set up a demonstration, but almost always do individual stuff. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, you are doing something wrong... they cannot Spar unless there are 2 or more dwarves training. :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Too many animal species
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:29:14 pm »
You know what would be neat? If there were lots and lots of species, but only a certain number of them showed up with each new world gen. I mean, obviously dogs, cats, camels and other common animals should always exist, but it would be a nice refresher to see new species ingame every now and then. Plus, for people like me who generally embark on the same biome type every time, I wouldn't know what animals I am going to see every time.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress worth.

It helps if you tell people how long your forts have been around. You could say that your fort's worth is 2 million d-bucks, but it doesn't tell me much. If youve been around for 20 in-game years, its not that impressive, but at 5 years, it means something totally different

Year 3 :X. I got a massive wave of migrants, turned them all into furnace operators, and churned out steel like crazy- followed by a Talented metalcrafted that came in a different wave, I started churning out steel stuff with steel decorating it.

I did this kind of thing with platinum once in 40d. I don't know what was wrong (perhaps the huge amount of modding I had done) but there was platinum everywhere. I remember getting a migrant wave of 50+ once (my personal record).                                                 So many fishermen...

Quick Question:

I have been embarked for about 2 years now (in mid-winter of my second year). I have only gotten 2 caravans, both Dwarven ones.

Is it normal that I haven't gotten human or elven ones yet? I have been seiged and gotten lots of migrants, so I positive that I am not isolated from them. We are not at war either of those two races. (I always check before embarking)

So, should I just keep pumping out more wealth? Will they never come to this fort? Its not terrible, I just like a monthly source of leather, bars and random stuff; which now seems to only come yearly now...

Maybe their civilizations are too small to send caravans or some such? I had that problem with my Dwarven race on my previous embark, never got a dwarven caravan but often got elven and human caravans, even though I wasn't technically isolated from the dwarven race.

Hmmm... I don't know of any way to check it. I genned only about 170 years if that makes a difference.

I'm also pretty sure I saw a lot of human and elven sites when I was looking for the site I'm using now.

If I embark on a map with saltwater (lets say a saltwater swamp), will all the water be saltwater, including the sub-terranian stuff?

I ask this because I remember an old 40d fort of mine where I was on an ocean. Because there was any saltwater at all, I had to desalinate any water for use, even the stuff from the forest biome on the other side of the map.

I just don't want to go through all that hassle to embark on this site I found. It's perfect for me in every other respect, too...

Does having a 3x3 embark help framerate a bit?  My framerate tends to cringe up in a corner and die slowly once I get more than 100 dorfs.
Smaller embark = more FPS
This goes vertically as well. There are options in the advanced worldgen where you can reduce (or increase) the amount of z-levels.

And also know that generally, map features (more so than size) tends to affect framerate. Rivers, brooks and especially oceans are pretty expensive fps wise. I dont know much about ponds/ lakes or other stationary waters.

Actually, does anyone know how much of an affect stationary environment things (like murky pools or even above ground boulders or trees/shrubs) have on fps?

Is an artifact bone short sword a very good weapon or a very crappy weapon?

A bone short sword, even artifact, is basically worthless as a weapon for military. It would probably work well in a weapons trap or in a nobles room.

Thats what I was afraid of. I guess Ill just let the guy who crafted it (an off duty marksman no less) carry it around and be the sheriff or something

I'll leave a post here for every time my woodcutter has died from something stupid in the first couple seasons. A skeletal buzzard shouldn't be able to kill you, you have an axe!
