They aren't forbidden are they? And is your dwarf assigned to a burrow that does not include the gem stockpile?
Also it says rough gems so the ones you have available aren't cut, right?

I uploaded my save file and made a comment in the bug tracker.

EDIT: This should probably be updated to game breaking since if you are under siege all your dwarves will get killed if you rely on your military. Thus making the save unplayable.

I am experiencing this same bug.
I have a save game where I am under a goblin siege, I stationed my military behind the gate and when the squad of trolls broke through the gate they started attacking my dwarves but my military just stands around letting the trolls kill them, the only thing they do is block and dodge. I even saved and reloaded the game while it was happening and nothing changed. Anyone got a fix for it?

I got a save mid siege if anyone wants to look at it. Just tell me if you want me to post it.

No, if it is marked as dump they will not use it. And once it HAS been dumped, it will automatically get forbidden.

I checked the save.
All of your wood is marked as (D)ump which will make the dwarves ignore it.

Yes under the orders menu it is best to always forbid other/your death items and corpses, that way your dwarves wont rush out to collect things as already described by Larix.
You can always unforbid those things later if you want them.

Yes crushing things under the drawbridge vaporises them, this is why it is called atom smashing. Players often use this to get rid of items that are not needed anymore.

For some reason in the new version(s) once you do stockpiles you have to use the give/take links to give workshops access to the raw materials.

That's not true, I don't have any stockpiles or workshops linked up and they work fine.

The wood is not forbidden by any chance is it?
Also your dwarves are not restricted to a burrow are they?

I'll take a look at your save soon if no one answers this before then.

I am guessing that if you say "I want 2 miners dedicated, 1 miner tertiary and 2 farmers tertiary"
It will assign 3 migrants as miners, 2 get all labours removed and get mining assigned, 1 just gets mining enabled and nothing else done to him and if there are not enough migrants it will give him the farming profession as well.
Then it will assign that last farmer profession to another migrant. Without changing any of his other jobs.

So now you have 3 miners, one who is also a farmer plus one extra farmer who also has his professions he originally had when he arrived at the fortress.

Has anyone done any science regarding FPS on large embarks?
I always play on 4x4 or 5x5 and on the 5th year the game usually slows down to 20 FPS (200 dwarves, no intricate fluid systems, no mods)
Has anyone played on 6x6 or larger and noticed much of a difference in FPS? I turned the temperature off a few days ago for a minute and didn't notice any change in FPS so temp shouldn't be an issue.

I'd love to play on larger embarks since 4x4 feels so cramped but I don't want to retire my fort in the 3rd year due to FPS.
I searched the forums if there was a similar topic but couldn't find one.

That would actually be pretty useful, being able to assign jobs to be filled with existing or migrant dwarves (a setting maybe?).
This would solve a lot of the tedium of having to assign jobs to that wave of 20 dwarves that just migrated to your fortress.

Yes, once I have more than 80 dwarves it sort of becomes a necessity for me.
I always bulk order food, clothes, cloth, booze and some other things.
Also sometimes when your dwarves are carrying your bins around constantly with items needed for workshop orders, jobs will get cancelled and the manager will make sure the job gets reassigned as long as it hasn't been completed.

Yes, as long as they are open when you retire.
