Other Games / Re: Space Station 13 *READ RULES ON FIRST POST*
« on: October 21, 2009, 09:19:36 pm »
I mused about a similar system, where the server would modify a reputation when the player did certain actions in some situations. The square root(preserving sign) of the reputation is added onto a collection of modifiers to get the overall ranking. The automated reputation would cap off at a certain point.

Below a threshold value, the user would be banned, possibly with their reputation(The server-set one) moving upwards toward zero. Accessing some jobs would have a minimum rating. Admin powers would also require a minimum rating, as well as a  flag, so a player could be set as a potential admin, so that if they play well, their reputation will reach a high enough point to allow basic commands. Probationary admin is also possible, where they start just above the threshold and any poor playing would drop them an admin-level.

A player's rating modifiers can be set by admins, and they can directly edit the reputation of a player, though both require a high admin-level.

New players would be restricted to lower level jobs, but could easily earn higher access. If multiple players want a job, the higher reputation player gets first priority. Captainship, if there is no suitably ranked player, or if they set a "be captain" option to no, and there is at least one with it set to yes, would be picked from the top 50% of available ranked individuals.

That completely possible.

just what who these certain actions be?.
Here's a few of the most outstanding representations of 'good' reputation builders I can think of at the moment, and one would almost never do if a griefer.
1. dragging someone who is unconscious onto the escape shuttle
2. being a good security officer, as in actually using fingerprints and putting people in the brig for a certain amount of time, as opposed to just beating the crap out of the suspect on any suspicion.
3. simply doing your job.
And a couple blatantly bad ways
1. killing someone who is not syndicate or known traitor
2. tampering with the atmospheric, electric, etc. order of the station
3. using AI modules not appropriate for your situation

Hmmm, the closest I can think of is this game called Dwarf Fortress. Basically you control a settlement and stuff. I can't remember where you find it but I know it's free, try googling it.

A kind of historical strategy game with an amazing scale of depth and realism, where the immersion pretty much makes you feel totally a part of the world. Playing a different country would be totally different and there would be tons of replay value. Honestly, I guess it's just EU3+MMP2 and then some. Pretty awesome that my ideal game exists for the most part.

Sounds very nice, but I do hope that some things aren't openly visible in the interface on purpose (for example, being a lord I don't know how the hell you'd be able to look and see the pH level of a field, you'd just have to infer pretty much). Would love to see it in action, I'm guessing you'll release it to the public in alpha stage, right?

What's wrong with awayteam message?
I don't understand how the awayteam always has absolutely no data regarding its explorations since last leaving the station.

A suggestion -

-> Since you can now dock with ships and walk around, why not do the same with spacestations?   Docking with a space station and walking around would be a lot more immersive than a list of options, as long as it was small and easy to find things.  During a quarentine, you would not be able to acess the station but would instead have a limited dropdown list.

I disagree, honestly. While it would be a bit more immersive, it would be pretty massively tedious after the first time. The pirate bases are already like this, and imo it's mainly just time consuming trying to find each shop, in such a way that it detracts from the game. Additionally, if the space station was built in such a way that you could easily find each shop, then would it really be that immersive anyway?

lol... killing an entire faction??  Not everything is solved with violence guys... XD

Killing not only makes the faction's supportes hate you but his family and all the people who watch it on the street.

If you want to suppress capitalists make a lot of socialist propaganda and give them one or two satisfactions, for christ sake! :P
One interesting thing in T1 is that you could easily make factions love you if you just pamper their Faction Leaders with bribes, houses, and lovely jobs.
This is the way to go and it's much more realistic.  It's how corrupt goverments deal with corrupt guild leaders.  For example, Argentina.

Military members must have decent housing and good money too.
Wait, you mean that there are solutions to appease the environmentalists that don't result in mass assassination and/or large deficits?

From what I can tell, people just hate you and turn into rebels. I'm playing the "unlimited demo" version, however, so I don't know if retail is any better. The game is fun, but bankruptcy sucks ass and seems really hard to avoid.
From what I can tell people don't get any scared of you for assassinating people, even if you assassinate pretty much the entire population.
It's not really that bad being bankrupt, and you can avoid it for the most part.
Also, unfortunately if you assassinate an entire faction, a new leader will appear out of the detractors, which makes no sense.  :-[

Hears mah desktawp.

I have a second screen, but as it has the same background as the first screen i don't see any point in posting it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Wallpaper is from...Three Panel Soul right?

Dunno, i can't remember where i got it from and i've never bothered to hunt down the artist (who appears to be called Ian MConville)

And hehe, DDO. That game is hell with just two people sometimes.

I think i played it for about 10 minutes before i realised that it ruined everything i liked about 3.5e and gave it up.

It's fun as long as you keep it in your mind that it's not a D&D MMO, it's an MMO set in D&D.
And it's really damn hard.
It's not really that hard if you have a good group. It's also much, much more fun if you have a good guild.

Life Advice / Re: Space colonization[IRL]
« on: October 13, 2009, 02:35:38 am »
The majority of colonization on the moon will probably be through indentured servitude and machinery unless you're some kind of scientist of value or businessman. There simply wouldn't really be any jobs for you to get on the moon where anyone wants to pay you anything of value.
I'm sure that some mining will be done on the moon, and major experimentation to see how beneficial the lack of atmosphere+low gravity and whatnot is for whatever, too.
I can't wait until some people decide to go and invade moon colonies and use them as bases to take satellites hostage or something crazy like that; It will just be awesome.

Faithless here, I think that being sure of anything is rather silly, but have specific views on how god would be.
Basically, he couldn't be too evil as he would most likely get bored of being evil after a while, and he couldn't be good because that would also be kind of silly in my opinion. Nobody told him about morals and he obviously considers all life to be of lesser importance than him. He's probably very intelligent, and his main goal is keeping himself entertained. Thus he goes around messing with his playthings, sometimes being good to them, sometimes just forgetting about them when he decides to go play with some other sapient species elsewhere.
To god we are basically dwarves in his game of dwarf fortress, he doesn't, and shouldn't, care about our innermost feelings, nor what happens to us after we die.

Wait, we're talking about RL super weapons, right? Bah, I voted yes but I hate super weapons in games as they're rarely ever represented nicely.

Regular katana, can't afford a fine katana right now. They run around 7k from Sargo's, and it's not much better from the corp stores.
You know that you can get a basic katana for about $400 in one of the corp shops, right?

Generally my first action regards liberating a bunch of sweat shop workers and having all but the ones with 5 tailoring suicidally steal cars. Thus I've got myself some nice disguise production possible and a good car pretty quickly.

Hmmm,
The Prohibition of Abortion isn't a conservative idea. While many conservatives, and primarily conservatives, support it, it's just a christian/moral thing. Personally, I think that having abortion be a factor doesn't really make sense.
