I typically think in waffers opposed to spheres. I'll have a fortress that will span a couple of z levels but is connected by one central stairwell shaft and usually with rooms with similar functions grouped together (IE anything dealing with food is one one floor, anythign dealing with crafting on another. ect)

you should be able to zoom to the item via the stocks menu. you might need to use tab to bring up the individual picks though.

has the miner been accosted by anything? i had a miner stick his pick into a goblin who tried to run off with it (my 8 champion marksdwarves said, "no" and he was forced to agree)

They do get hungy and thirsty, its just that since dwarves lug their kid everywhere and feed them immediately when they're hungry/thirsty, you probably never notice it. I had an orphan, and by orphan I mean one of my guards beat the mother to the point where she had to be dragged off to bed, and her baby was left behind for a long time. I dont think it survived.

Feed him to your nobles...

hmmm... or was it the other way around? Meh details..

I'm currently working off and on with my tombs. My plan is to group tombs together based on relations so that means variable sized rooms.

that and some of the families in my fortress are 14 members big...

Magma detects them both quietly and efficently.

though it does put a dampener on long term silk gathering prospects.

the crawling baby means that either the mother is dead, or unable to pick the child up (in jail, unconsious due to injuries)

okay I have a question, I have a dragon at my fortress. He came from the edge of the map, and ran over to one of my ambush collectors.

now I assumed he'd try to make a snack of the tasty kitten in the collector, which it looks like thats his plan.... except he's some sort of "special" dragon who sits and stares at walls rather than go down an open path. He's unmoving in this regard, he just stares at the wall, with the succulent kittenflesh on the other side. Will he eventually snap out of this? Or do I need to go poke him with a stick/

no wait! he moved! I guess he discovered that the wall wasn't budging, he's now trying the same tactic from a different angle....

I'm wondering whether it would be a good idea to tame this guy... he might pass the stupid genes on to his kids...

finally he moved into the entrance (and got trapped) is this normal dragon behavior?

yeah a simple fix would be to make the firmly shut option = no animals pass regardless of wether the door is open or not.
