The natural floods extend to about 20 squares infront of the river and 10 squares behind it. Dwarfmade floods can go anywhere but are very volatile when they come in contact with other sources of water.

I don't have boil/freeze numbers, but they are easy to figure out with some trail and error.
Actual military training doesn't give you a gun on your first day. I consider the above theory practice.
I had one trapper run off immediatly when he migrated.
A few months later they brough him back in.

During the entire period there were only deer on the map.
One of them still carries an iron bolt in it.
I generaly make a truckload of looms and [R] A different clothing item on each one. the dwarves randomly run to them to make the items they think they need and if i get too much of one i disable that one temporary.
