Other Games / Netbook Gaming
« on: July 23, 2010, 01:24:24 am »
Got myself a netbook, now I'm wondering what games I should get for it.
It has 1 gig of RAM, a 150 gig HD, a dual core 1.66 Ghz processor, and an Intel 945 Express Graphics Chip with 256mb of memory.

Games I already have and have previously had.

Battlefield 1942
Dwarf Fortress
The Sims
Eve
Sam & Max
Jagged Alliance 2
N64 Emulator
Starcraft
Elder Scrolls 3 : Morrowind
Counter Strike 1.6
Grand Theft Auto 3

No longer taking players!

Ha ha! Damn right, Jagged Alliance 2. One of the best games to come out during the late nineties.

For those of you who do not know, the Jagged Alliance series has been around since 1991. You play as a group of mercenaries, which you can either chose from a list or create from scratch, and you usually must overthrow some evil dictator through guerrilla warfare and mindcrushingly terrible puns and catch phrases.
Jagged Alliance is known for two things, it's amazing strategic turn based gameplay and it's sense of humor.
It's kind of got a "losing is fun" feel because dying is usually hilarious

.

So I'm going to begin a Let's Play. I'm looking for 2-5 forum members who wish to create a character in game. You do not have to choose to follow the story line, you can create an objective of your own if you please.

I should also tell you I'm running with several mods for realism/gun purposes. I'm running the following mods.

IOV, Formerly known as "The cosplay mod". Cosplay means something else entirely in Russia, where most of the mod developers live. It adds hundreds of firearms and the MOLLE style vest system.

1.13 This mod adds tons of bugfixes, features, and nifty items/inventory system modifiers. Made the game ten times more fun.

HAM 3.5 This mods tweaks just about everything to do with all the NPCs and Player Characters. It makes combat much more realistic, allowing you to use strategies like covering fire, suppresive fire, and other such types of attack with great affect.

STOMP 1.0 This mod gives more personality traits and "Skills" to mercs. Mercs can now have "Classes" such as machine gunner, sniper, technician, etc. Depending on the class they get bonuses to certain skills.

Hey all, I've wanted to get into tabletop gaming for some time now but all my friends have "Like-DnD?-Isn't-That-Nerdy?" syndrome. I managed to get some people online to play but they're not online a lot at all.

So I thought some of you might want to try Twilight 2000 with me. I've already read all the books and gone through practice runs, so I know how it works. Simply put, Twilight 2000 is like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mixed with Jagged Alliance. It can however have Haven and Hearth like features. You can do just about anything in this game, no limits. I have some players rebuilding a small town in Poland, some players returned home to New York and are in a gang there now, and another team has hooked up with a US armored division and is on the assault in easter poland. I can't describe this game very well I think, so here's the wiki article.

Twilight 2000 is a role-playing game set in the aftermath of World War III (the "Twilight War"). The premise is that the United States/NATO and the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact have fought a lengthy conventional war, followed by a (limited) nuclear war with all its consequences. Characters in the game are survivors of the war.

The adventures in Twilight 2000 typically involve a military unit which was stranded in Central Europe after the nuclear war and places emphasis on attempting to realistically depict military and social systems after a nuclear war.

The manufacturer of the game, Game Designers' Workshop (GDW), which is now owned by Tantalus, extended the timeline of Twilight 2000 to create the background history for the science fiction game 2300 AD; by doing so the rather depressing post-nuclear environment of Twilight 2000 is mitigated by the outcome in which the Earth rebuilds itself and begins to colonize space.

Twilight 2000's success as a game can be attributed in part to its manner of presenting a military background and setting, without hemming the players into a military's command structure. The civilian governments of most countries in the game have been shattered (France and Belgium quit NATO and thus largely escaped war damage,) with the US government splitting into the civilian and military governments, as has the military chain of command, supply lines, etc. The various military forces are presented as being much weaker than their stated sizes, occupying civilian territories and relying on civilians for food and small-scale manufacturing, and recruiting from civilian populations to some extent. This all means that the players can feel they are part of a military of some sort, without their characters being forced to submit to higher military authority. Players generally can choose whether they want their characters to try and continue the war, get back home (wherever that may be), be a part of one of the new power groups wherever they are, simply survive as mercenaries or marauders, or some combination.

Anyone want to play? It'll be over MSN.

I should also note, I can modify this game to take place anywhere at anytime. I have a request for Mercenaries in Iraq.

Slaves to Armok: God of Blood / What the hell is this?
« on: March 01, 2010, 11:28:52 pm »
I've been lurking for a year and I've never been able to figure out what Armok 1 is.

What the hell am I supposed to do? I've heard the jokingly "Walk around and kill trees" line, but surely there's more? Can you build things? Find villages? If not can you mod them/create them?

Just what exactly CAN I do in this game?

Other Games / Games with construction

I know this is a stupidly hard request, but I have no where else to turn. I have two actually.

Looking for a specific type of game. With building elements or survival elements. Like Haven And Hearth.

The other would be a game where you can choose from a wide variety of classes, like warrior, mage, that kind of junk. But ALSO be able to play SIMPLE characters, like farmers, merchants, or craftsmen. Online preferably. If there are building elements in it it would be perfect.

Games checked off the list

Haven and Hearth

Ultima Online

Stranded 2

Other Games / PSN Is Down (Lol Nevermind)
« on: March 01, 2010, 10:03:52 am »
The Play Station Network went down sometime last night. Normally I'd say "Oh well" and continue gaming offline, as I grew up in the days before online play. But no, not only was the online community affected, but through some terrible glitch in the trophy system a few OFFLINE games no longer work. Including Call of Duty MW2. This is affecting ALL the oldschool "fat" models. The Slim models seem to be unaffected.

Normally I only have nice things to say about Sony, but an offline crash is just unacceptable, something one would expect more from a 360.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sad stories
« on: October 25, 2009, 11:42:00 pm »
Well, to start out, I was carving a fortress out of a mountain and thought "Well shit, it'd be faster if I collapsed certain parts of the mountain"

So I dug out the base of the mountain adding supports accordingly. The first section I was going to take down was a relatively small section of mountain. Only 2 z levels tall and 15 tiles wide. I pull the lever and then came my "Oh fuck what have I done" face. I totally forgot that directly under that was my food stockpile. I was lucky, and had only killed 4 dwarves out of 110. I fixed the hole and wrote off the incident until I saw a child with a flashing downward arrow. I check her profile only to see that all 4 Dwarves that died in the incident were her parents and baby sisters. I orphaned her. I never really felt a lot about my dwarves unless they were war heroes or something, but this one tugged on my heart strings. I felt terrible. As the player, I was Armok. As Armok, I had forsaken her, so I decided to try to make amends with the young girl and gave her everything I could. A 15x15 bedroom, fully engraved by legendary stoneworkers, several chests and toys made of gold and platinum (She really likes platinum) even a little play table and chairs made of colorful materials. Gold statues, an artifact bed, her favorite foods, and none of it was enough to make her happy again.

Now my entire 125 dorf fort is designed to do nothing but keep this child satisfied and safe. When she grows up I plan on either making her commander of my armed forces or appointing her to whatever noble status I can, depending on how she grows up.

Another time I felt bad I kind of added my own back story to it, but still.

I had made my first large fortress, many months ago, and I had just gotten my first hammerer. Reading so many stories about how evil the hammerer was I rigged his room to flood with water. In time he never hurt anyone. Always kept to himself, following nobles and such. One day I cought him when he was in his room so I quickly pulled the lever and water started to fill the room. Then I noticed something odd.

In his room were stacks of toys. Stacks and stacks of them, made of microcline, orthoclose, olivine, and many others.

He had never hurt anyone, always kept to himself, and he liked toys. Oh god, I just started drowning a totally innocent dwarf. Not only an innocent dwarf, but a TRULY innocent dwarf who only wanted to be left alone and play with his toys. Oh god oh god oh god turn off the water. But it was too late. I killed him.  :-[

DF Modding / Ammunition and guns
« on: October 17, 2009, 07:16:26 am »
I was wondering if you could have multiple ingrediants in a smelter reaction?

Say I wanted to make bullets for guns I'm working on, could I create a reaction that requires 2 ingredients? Like salt peter and stone to make gunpowder and projectiles for a new weapon?

On another note, could I replace the crossbow with another weapon?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Serious lack of animeals
« on: August 14, 2009, 09:03:27 pm »
No, that isn't a typo, I refer to animals as ani-meals since that's all they're good for.
However, I recently started a megaproject (Turning a volcano into a giant housing facility for a weapons/armor factory) and totally forgot to bring animeals with me. Will my dwarves have unhappy thoughts because of a lack of meaty goodness? I get a bit of fish, and get all the meat I can when I trade (Two legendary metalcrafters, and a mountain full of magma and copper = win).

So will they have unhappy thoughts? Or are they okay with this? They seem content on plump helmets and the occasional fish so far.
