NECROMANCER
Chapter One: Prologue

Necromancers. We're Feared, hated, reviled. There's no reason for it. People fear death, but we walk with it and converse with it. We learn from it. And so they fear us. They believe we prefer the undead. They are ignorant, but it makes us alone. And those who are alone are excommunicated.

I am a Necromancer. Despite no sin, I burn in the "holy" light of Arnor. Despite no wrongdoing, I am hunted by my own family. Despite no crime, I am hounded by the authorities. I am an outcast, a leper, a forsaken scrap rotting on the side of the road.

I don't hate them for it. It just makes me sad.

I pull myself a little bit closer to the small campfire I've made. It took me hours to gather enough twigs and leaves for a few minutes of warmth, avoiding patrols and monsters. I'm going to make the best of it. I always do.

It's so cold. I've almost forgotten my name...

They were the greats. The First of the next generation, the Archelementals. Jake Kenith, Archelemental Fire, astounding in looks, a huge player amongst the ladies, and a extreme sport phenom. Marissa Niyol, Archelemental Air, an outstanding pilot and navigator, possessed of a free spirit. Anat Abd-Maa, Archelemental Water, Sits on a throne in the middle east, forming the Ata-Allah, walking the streets and bringing Arabia back into a golden age. The others, Stephan O'Deorsa of Earth, his wife Lady Isabell of Spirit, and the twin sisters Yuki and Hotaruko Sotsui, all vanished after Hotaruko was coronated as the new empress of Japan. No-one has seen them, though they make their presence known through the subtle twisting of politics. The new Czar of Free Russia, a next gen man himself, is barely 18. Already Russia is booming with money and power. The other nations don't know it, but Russia gears for war.

As does the USA, and as does Japan, China, and every world player. They all do it in complete secrecy, none knowing of the others. The world is a powder keg.

It is into this world you are born. The next Power. The Last Archelemental.

Where are you born?
What is your Name?
What are your parents like?

APOSTATE
BOOK ONE: Deus Gerit Vilis Vestimenta
Chapter one: The Death of Kings

The moon glimmered on the water, stirred softly by the wind. The gentle breeze flowed through the grass and tickled the feet of night creatures great and small, a reminder of how large the universe was.

A young boy sleeps in his bedroom, watched faithfully by sentries. The open window lets the wind in, colling the hot guards on this warm summer night. They too, sit peacefully, wrapped in the waking sleep of men who were loyally doing a dreadfully boring task. The starlight filtered through the window in sliver streams, shadows dancing from the curtains in long strands of silent darkness.

Without a noise, another shadow slips into the room, unnoticed by the guards on call. In their trance, they fail to notice the shimmer of silver as a blade is drawn. Just as silently, the guards are silenced, their spines severed at the base of the neck. All the magic in the world would not save them of a silver blade, and it sliced through flesh like a warm knife through butter. They never cried out, never made a sound. They barely even slumped, inertia keeping their corpses sat in their chairs.

The boy wriggles and pulls the sheets higher, long golden locks falling over his face. The assassin pauses, breathing softly. The boy moves not again, and the assasin relaxes.

   The dagger falls.

You jerk awake, breathing heavily. Another nightmare. The ensorcellments on your arm burn like fire, prompting a rub. The bumps of the brand are still red and sore, almost a month after you joined the royal guard. Well, not really the royal guard. They don't let just anybody into the royal guard, but they do let poor like you into the palace guard, if you're good enough. And you are. It's almost as good, you do get to live in the palace after all.

Judging by the light on the wall from the high windows, you're awake a few hours too early. You have a choice to make: Go back to sleep and eke the last remaineders of rest from the morning, or stay awake and alert, ready for the day ahead?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do you have a fovorite biome?
« on: February 17, 2012, 09:38:28 am »
Personally, I like flat grasslands with a river in them. It makes it so much easier to get a nice, clean-looking fort than the hillsides, even if it does mean less dwarfy engineering to avoid terrain obstacles.

I also prefer the upper side of the temperate biomes, because I want my map to freeze over during the winter but thaw before summer.

And since I figure the board is probably about 70% male there's no particular order. That's what the multiple quote function is for, after all.

Also they don't have to be good or horrible. Both is probably better.

I'll start off with a classic:

Did it hurt?
[what?]
Getting abducted from the model convention.

They bring you to me

You are weak. A newborn, raw and unfocused. But I have seen the future that awaits you. You shall be strong. You shall become so much more than a champion, so much more than anyone has ever imagined you could be. You are weak, but you shall become a god.

Can you feel it? The earth cries for you to return. And so your captors listen.
Can you feel it? The water rushes you home. And your captors follow.
Can you feel it? The air whispers your truest name. And your captors heed it.
The fires send you away. They fear you. But perhaps you may yet win the fires heart.
The dead are chanting your coming.
The light is dancing for your return!
The darkness flees at your touch and craves your forgivness!

Gods and mortals can feel your fate ahead of you. But can you?

You are raw as clay. I can feel who you will be, but who are you now? These are questions you will have to answer, and soon. Wake Up. Do not fear the path you tread. Wake Up. I will contact you again when you are ready. Wake Up. Now, go from your slumber, and be a hero. Wake Up.

You wake up. A man is there. His wrists are tied, and he's nudging you with his foot.

"Wake up. They're coming to get us. What's your name?"

It's not much. It's rusty, outdated. The drive could use a little work, it's almost a year old now and the technitium is half decayed. It shouldn't even be able to fly, much less make the cross between systems.

  But it's YOURS.

It's YOUR ship! You don't have to listen to anyone now! By law, you are no longer a citizen of any one empire, you're a free agent. A civilian contractor. Of course, the real big players won't listen if you show up in a dingy little ship like this, but there are always small issues that people need taken care of. Simple fetch quests by rich folk who don't have the time to fly to some backwater planet and pick up their doubiously legal goods.

You're bound by galactic code to register your ship, though. They give you a few multiple choice questions.

Because we honestly need one. And I personally need a seed since my friend flooded our old succession fort. I'll update the version too, once Toady gets it in working order.

Simple game. Just make a pun. The pun has to be related but different to the pun of the poster above you. Think picture fight for puns.

After all, we're all ice people here.

Anyone know where I can find one? I don't really need any fancy features, just one that doesn't have a virus and doesn't make me pay $25 to unpack sims 3 mods.

General Discussion / Karnewarrior Writes a Book
« on: December 28, 2011, 04:38:33 pm »
So, I'm sure most of you who know me know I like writing. And for the past 3-4 years, I've been gunning for being a professional author.

I'm proud to say I have begun to write a book! Two books, actually, but one in particular I can't stop thinking about to the point where the unwritten book has taken over my youtube playlist.

That being said, I do want to take a general, unofficial survey before getting too deep into it.

Spoiler: Book Idea (click to show/hide)
How do I synopsis?

So question one is if you would read that book if you just found it in a bookstore one day.

Question two is how exactly should I spell words in other languages, especially ones with different writing systems, like Russian. Is it Nyet or Net? Phonetic spelling or something different? I know plenty of you are bilingual, so I could really use your help. Thanks, guys.

What are your skills?

You awaken on the dirty straw of a prison cell, with a dirty, gritty feeling all over your body. You've been here since... Since you can remember, but you can't remember any of your childhood. You're a blank slate; in this case, a blank slate covered in the fecal matter of some small rodent.

In front of you is a cell door, almost certainly locked. To your left is the small table they let you have meals on. You rarely are fed, so you don't usually use it. To your right, the scratchings of whoever was in here before you. They're illegible and meaningless, made uncomfortably obvious by the authors bones still hanging in the manacles nearby. Behind you, a small window, far smaller than you.

But, first you have to know who you are. You appraise yourself, having nothing better to do, and find:
