DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Points
« on: July 28, 2010, 05:41:37 pm »
I just entered embark, and when I tried to add some skills to a dwarf, I couldn't.  Then I noticed I only had one point to spend.  I checked the items, and they all seemed to be regular items, so I sold them all back, and found I started with 1000 points, rather than the 1274 the wiki seems to say is normal.  Anyone else experienced this?

DF General Discussion / A dwarf died today
« on: July 19, 2010, 04:59:07 pm »
A dwarf died today in the hospital, and another dwarf ran in and jumped in bed with his corpse.  I decided to use the hospital as a tomb too.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Something funny
« on: April 23, 2010, 01:45:28 pm »
I settled on a goblin fortress recently, and digging down to the caves I noticed that a tunnel was visible despite it not being open to the air, with one end obscured, which I uncovered, to learn it ends soon after I loose sight of it.

But that's not the funny thing I saw.  I abandoned and came back as an adventurer to investigate the large area with superiorly engraved floors I found in the caves.  I noticed nothing unusual about the area beyond the engraved floors, until I realized the map showed the temple right above me, and the area was the exact shape of the temple.  Heh, bug.

I'm trying to jump down a hole at the moment, but I can't.  Every time I alt-move over it, my dwarf is suddenly flying, and the only movement I can make at all is back to the ground.  Think this was intended to be the ability to leap over 1-tile pits?

Edit:  Oh wait, just noticed the pit is filled with topless ice walls.

I just managed to find my way as an adventurer through the caves to the great magma sea.  Then I fell in by accident.  I'm now drowning, but noticed that I was getting no wounds.  It took a long time for me to get any wounds, and so far they are very moderate.  It seems it takes too long for magma to heat the adventurer's flesh to the point of burning.  Adventurers should be perfectly able to swim across fairly wide magma rivers before dying.  Maybe longer if they hug blizzardmen first.

DF Bug Reports / [31.01]Construction orders remain in adventure mode
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:28:52 am »
I abandoned a fortress and returned as an adventurer.  When I did, the designations for walls that never got built are still visible.  They are called "wall" when I [l]ook at them, and I can walk through them normally.

I was beating a dragon to death as a bronze colossus when I picked up the statue of one of the previous colossi, and noticed it was a statue of a Yeti instead of a colossus.  I had made some yeti earlier.

Edit: another left a statue of a purring maggot.  Of course, I never made any of them.

DF Bug Reports / 31.01-Legs are not needed.
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:58:52 pm »
Miner dwarf decides to drop the tile he is standing on, and mangles all bones in his legs.  Doctor dwarf is trying to surgery him, but no one can bring him water because we are on the ocean and the pump is not ready yet, so eventually the injured dwarf runs off to get booze.  Then he runs off to mine again, legs still mangled.

So, the issue is that a dwarf with all leg bones red is in fact walking around.  He is not prone, either.  He is standing.

DF Bug Reports / Odd stone selecting thing(resolved, I suppose)
« on: January 07, 2010, 07:12:58 pm »
I'm trying to build a few floors over the chasm in this fortress, since some resident previously smashed the bridges and took several people's lives with it.  However, if I select a stone of alunite as the first stone, the menu ceases to show any other stones.  It only shows the single first stone as existing, with a distance of --.  Doesn't seem to happen with any other combination of stone selecting.  I figured it might have something to do with that single alunite stone that is on the bit of land between the two holes, which are under floor plans in this picture.

First, the menu...

Then, when I try to pick alunite...

Edit:  Oh yeah, 40d, only mod is catsplosion.

DF General Discussion / River is silly.
« on: November 30, 2009, 08:02:05 pm »
I've got an underground river that pulls a turn like this:

|_
 _|
|________

This being an up/down cross section.

Because of the turn, the red part is drained and dry, because the river opens in a shape like this:

|_
 _|
|_|_______

I thought that was neat, is all, but also un-river like.

Here's a hard to make out Visual Fortress picture.

DF Bug Reports / Elf Town
« on: November 20, 2009, 09:22:18 pm »
So, I have recently been wandering around, looking for a civ that didn't matter to me much for the purpose of meanness.  I went into a forest retreat to bother some elves, and indeed, there were elves, in the mead hall.  So far, the town seems to be mostly elves, with a few humans.

DF Suggestions / Lever Pull Triggers
« on: November 17, 2009, 03:53:57 pm »
I was gonna post this in the old thread about manned levers, but the red text told me not to necro.

The idea was, I think it'd be cool if we could set certain levers with triggers, like "if a dwarf sees X in zone Y(a zone dedicated to the lever pull trigger), a Pull Lever job is started on this lever."

Could use this to automate the recapture of escaped livestock, or to automatically seal doors in case of an invasion, or some crazy doo-hickey where a dwarf watches the water level in the room he's in and stops it before it drowns him.

I just thought it seemed like a good idea.

DF Modding / Unrelated weirdness
« on: November 16, 2009, 03:55:39 pm »
So, I've been trying to add a fish people civ to my game.  So far, I've only been able to play as one as an adventurer, who can take no skills and has no equipment.  With a recent change, for the hell of it I added the [EQUIPMENT_WAGON] tag to see if I'd start play as a dead wagon.

Instead, I just noticed that something has gone very wrong in my world.  Every time I enter a dwarven settlement, I get messages of everyone being caught in clouds of boiling leather.  Then I get messages that people are freezing to death.  Then I found a cave fish silk sock on a corpse.  To top it off in an ironic way, I just heard a story of a dwarf being killed by the treant Slakga Taxflames the Silvers of Fire's dragon fire.

Is this some issue with my inexperienced modding attempts?

Also, what are some common reasons that a modded civ might not appear?  I'm running out of ideas.

Thanks.

Edit:  And later, I ran into a dwarven civ in an obsidian tower.  I even met the queen, wandering around outside.

DF Bug Reports / Bed Order Suspended Because Site Was Blocked by bed
« on: August 17, 2009, 03:26:17 am »
Howdy.  I was building beds so the dwarves could quit cracking their heads on the rough stone floor, when I got a message that one "build bed" order had been suspended because an item was blocking the site.  I had guessed it was a similar situation to when my dwarves wouldn't build a wall because there was a rock of the exact material I wanted them to use for the wall on the tile.

Strangely like the wall problem, when I found the offending object, it was the bed.  It had not been built, just dropped in the exact location where I had ordered it built, but no one seems to want to build it.

Sure, I can fix it by moving the bed, but found this a bit annoying.

Edit:  Messed up title.
