DF Gameplay Questions / Military Training Schedules.
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:30:25 pm »
I've ready somewhere that if a military squad is set to train and the set minimum amount of dwarves training is the same as their squad number, then the dwarves will train constantly and not eat or drink, is this true? I would let some of em be off duty but its really bugging me not being able to tell which dwarves are in my military and which aren't when handing out job assignments.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:48:48 pm »
I've got a few questions about the new military.

1 - While I understand how to get a melee weapon using squad to train now from the wiki page, how would I get a crossbow using squad to train?

2 - What is the most convenient way people have found to switch a squad from practice to real weapons? is there a way to do it based on alerts?

3 - Will squads told to defend a burrow through their schedule hang about that burrow while on duty, or just wander about the fort and head up there if something crosses the burrow? If the burrow is large will they spread out or patrol it or something?

4 - Will a squad assigned to defend a burrow chase enemies outside of its burrow?

5 - Do direct commands override scheduling or does there need to be a specific schedule state for them?

DF Gameplay Questions / Medical Care
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:20:45 pm »
I've got a question about medical care. I've read about a bug with making plaster casts for broken bones when the doctor tries to fill the water for it. if I simply never get any plaster will the doctor just decide to not attempt a cast rather than starve to death standing at a well, or will I get an endless stream of cancelled job alerts?

Also if the doctor is unable to put a cast on the limb will they be able to do something with splints, or are they a part of casts?

DF Community Games & Stories / Refugees, A Dwarven Community Fortress
« on: March 24, 2010, 01:27:22 pm »
(Note, A.C. Is After Civilisation. Cannonically this is counting in years from when the first Civilisations were formed, in game terms it is from year 0.)

[1st of Granite, 300 A.C.]
Journal of Navok Ducimstorlu

I never thought that things would end up like this.

I can scarcely believe it was only a few weeks before that was back in Dalzatlitast, things had been going great, I was a captain in The Winged Blades, the personal bodyguard-squad of King Oddon Langgudoslan himself!

Noone expected the attack, when The Wild Sabres succeded from The Lined Artifact back in150 A.C. there was plenty of bad blood on both sides, enough for 70 years of war, but the war was long done with, the bones buried and the cities rebuilt.

Still, I guess that has all changed now. I was eating when it happened, the Loyalists had dug under the fortress, collapsing parts of it to cause chaos and create entry points for their troops, one of those points was the dining hall I was sat in. I don’t remember much after that, apparently the Loyalists took the fortress with little trouble, killing all they could find.

I was lucky, the fall took me down into the sewer systems, where I was picked up by a group of dwarves using the tunnels to escape, as Dalzatlitast was sacked my unconscious body was put onto a wagon and taken off into the night.

Reports from other groups confirmed that this had happened in other places as well, in one fell swoop the Loyalists had destroyed all 3 major Mountain Homes:

Onoltu - the Majestic spire fortress, built out of pure marble.
Gutor – The largest Dwarven city ever built, miles upon miles of tunnels connecting in a grid, holding nearly 2000 dwarves within.
And finally Dalzatlitast – Built inside the crater of the might volcano Olsmo, where Obok Kolalen killed the demon Olsmo.

All gone, and in the days after the Loyalists swept through the land, destroying all they could find.

Now I sit here in this wagon, three weeks on. Me and 6 other dwarves, just trying to survive.

Taken from the Journel of Navok Ducimstorlut, founder of Orstistdatan

Ok, I.C. stuff over. This is going to be a community fort run by me. We are using Vanilla-DF with one added race, the Loyalists, which are basically a copy of dwarves with made hostile.

Currently there are six slots open, feel free to request a dwarf/profession.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to use a program to change genders, and after reading Migurust it seems there are some *ahem* problem with that, so simply state you’re preferred gender and then its first come first serve gender-wise.

Yes I’m aware of the placeholders in the IC stuff, they will be replaced when the fort in genned.

Also a point here, while this won’t come up until later battles during narrative of fights involving the loyalists they are identified by their armour, which is Black Steel with a gold trim. The forts dwarves will be wearing undecorated armour, unless this is done in-game.

Soo yeah, anyone who wants in feel free to post.

(Final note: While I do know how to play i'm not the best player, apart from certain aspects I have planned out feel free to offer advice/suggestions/things you think would look cool.

DF Modding / Modding in Civ's
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:29:26 am »
Just a few general questions about modding in civs

1) If a civ has the ability to swim will they use it if they invade/come to trade

2) Same for the ability to fly, also how well will they use the ability to fly in combat?

3) One thing i was interested in trying was simulating a civil war between dwarves by creating a second dwarf race, which would siege my fortresses. Aside from a different name what tags would i need to make this work properly (specifically to make them hostile)

DF General Discussion / New Computer, What can it handle? (DF-wise)
« on: February 24, 2010, 03:10:09 pm »
Had a new computer recently, and looking at the specs on it it seems like i'll be able to abandon some of my old FPS saving techniques (hell of a lot better than my old laptop)

Anyway can someone give me an rough idea of what this computer will probably be able to handle DF-Wise

Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit
4gb Ram
Intel Core2 QuadCore Q8200 @ 2.33ghz(4cpus)

Any other information that might be useful just give me a name and general idea of where it might be, thanks in advance guys, Vayre.

(also sorry if this is wrong forum, i was torn between this and gameplay questions)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Inventive/favourite traps
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:25:32 am »
Not including weapon traps, cage traps or that sort of thing, try to post traps with original designs, either inventive or just uncommon.

Execution devices for precaged enemies are fine as well

1) War alligators with the can_learn tag, in a 5-z level flooded pit, will the goblins drown or be torn apart?

2) Goblin water slide, build a 20 z-level reservouir, put goblin in a 1 tile passage at the bottom of the reservouir, release water then sit back n watch

I have more but I'll post again later go wild people.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarven physics - flooding room
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:10:09 am »
Got an idea for an execution room but need help, the idea is that goblins are dropped into a room floored by grates, then a lever is pulled, water rises through the grates, drowns the goblins and sinks back down through the grates, getting the water up is easy using pumps and pressure,  but does anyone know how I can make the water drain away through the grates?

DF Gameplay Questions / Chains
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:59:39 am »
just a few questions

1) Will aggressive untamed animals on chains be able to attack dwarves
2) Will aggressive untamed animals on chains be able to scare dwarves (as in cancel tasks)
3) Do aggressive humanoids (elves modded to be aggrssive be taking [Intelligent] away and just adding [CAN_CIV] and [CAN_SPEAK] or somehting like that) have different behaviours when on chains? IF so then repeat first 2 questions for captured elves
4) During a recent elven ambush one of my own kittens got caught in my age trap, any idea what happened here?
5) what do ya'll think i should do with my two captured elves, quick brutal death or long slow death on display outside my fortress?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sheer cliffs
« on: December 05, 2009, 03:32:32 pm »
I think i remember seeing a few examples of this, sheer cliffs of rock (stright down, no ramps), does anyone have any advice on how to get a world to generate these, and how to find them on embark.

Or alternatively if anyone has an example of a decent one that is rather tall, that a seed/location for that would be highly appreciated thanks = )

DF Gameplay Questions / Barracks
« on: December 01, 2009, 03:19:18 pm »
Yeah just a quick question, once dorf population starts to get high, bedroom organisation starts to get to be a real problem for me ( as in getting all the dorfs a bedroom) so my question is, if a build a massive barracks, large enough to hold all the dorfs, and so glorious that dwarfs have been known to break down in tears at the sight of it, then would that cance out the bad thoughts from not having a proper room?

General Discussion / Favourite quotes
« on: November 24, 2009, 02:58:55 am »
Just a thread to collect quotes people read and thought were funny, meaningful or just something they liked.

Carrot - Men At Arms
If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you are going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat.
They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the murder like another man will put off a good cigar.
So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tropical Biomes
« on: November 20, 2009, 11:12:08 am »
Can anyone give me some advice on finding tropical biomes?

Currently I have generated about 10 worlds without a single tropical biome, is there some sort of bug in 40d that prevents them or has the universe read my mind and decided that an army of trained elephants is to awesome to exist?
